Abstract

We study energy transport in the integrable ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ parafermionic chain using the partitioning protocol. By exploiting the Bethe-ansatz solution for the thermodynamics of the system, we develop a generalized hydrodynamic description of the nonequilibrium steady states, which we benchmark using numerical simulations based on matrix product states. The model features a low-energy conformal limit with central charge $c=\frac{4}{5}$, which affects the low-temperature energy current, as we explicitly show. Moreover, we exploit that, for energies close to the maximally excited state, the system is also critical and described by a conformal field theory with $c=1$. By considering the two halves prepared at two temperatures both low in value but opposite in sign, we are able to investigate in an exact and controlled way the junction between two conformal field theories with different central charges. Notwithstanding the absence of global conformal invariance, we find results that approximate to a high degree those of out-of-equilibrium conformal field theories. Our study extends the generalized hydrodynamics to a framework where it can be profitably used for exploring new physical phenomena.

Conformal field theory out of equilibrium: a review

Denis Bernard, Benjamin Doyon

Abstract We provide a pedagogical review of the main ideas and results in non-equilibrium conformal field theory and connected subjects. These concern the understanding of quantum transport and its statistics at and near critical points. Starting with phenomenological considerations, we explain the general framework, illustrated by the example of the Heisenberg quantum chain. We then introduce the main concepts underlying conformal field theory (CFT), the emergence of critical ballistic transport, and the CFT scattering construction of non-equilibrium steady states. Using this we review the theory for energy transport in homogeneous one-dimensional critical systems, including the complete description of its large deviations and the resulting (extended) fluctuation relations. We generalize some of these ideas to one-dimensional critical charge transport and to the presence of defects, as well as beyond one-dimensional criticality. We describe non-equilibrium transport in free-particle models, where connections are made with generalized Gibbs ensembles, and in higher-dimensional and non-integrable quantum field theories, where the use of the powerful hydrodynamic ideas for non-equilibrium steady states is explained. We finish with a list of open questions. The review does not assume any advanced prior knowledge of conformal field theory, large-deviation theory or hydrodynamics.

Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and generalised hydrodynamics in the sine-Gordon model

Botond C. Nagy, G. Takács, Márton Kormos

We set up a hydrodynamic description of the non-equilibrium dynamics of sine-Gordon quantum field theory for generic coupling. It is built upon an explicit form of the Bethe Ansatz description of general thermodynamic states, with the structure of the resulting coupled integral equations encoded in terms of graphical diagrams. The resulting framework is applied to derive results for the Drude weights of charge and energy. Quantities associated with the charge universally have fractal dependence on the coupling, which is notably absent from those associated with energy, a feature explained by the different roles played by reflective scattering in transporting these quantities. We then present far-from-equilibrium results, including explicit time evolution starting from bipartite initial states and dynamical correlation functions. Our framework can be applied to explore numerous other aspects of non-equilibrium dynamics, which opens the way to a wide array of theoretical studies and potential novel experimental predictions.

Thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for non-equilibrium steady states: exact energy current and fluctuations in integrable QFT

Olalla Castro-Alvaredo, Yixiong Chen, Benjamin Doyon +1 more

We evaluate the exact energy current and scaled cumulant generating function (related to the large-deviation function) in non-equilibrium steady states with energy flow, in any integrable model of relativistic quantum field theory (IQFT) with diagonal scattering. Our derivations are based on various recent results of D. Bernard and B. Doyon. The steady states are built by connecting homogeneously two infinite halves of the system thermalized at different temperatures $T_l$, $T_r$, and waiting for a long time. We evaluate the current $J(T_l,T_r)$ using the exact QFT density matrix describing these non-equilibrium steady states and using Al.B. Zamolodchikov's method of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). The scaled cumulant generating function is obtained from the extended fluctuation relations which hold in integrable models. We verify our formula in particular by showing that the conformal field theory (CFT) result is obtained in the high-temperature limit. We analyze numerically our non-equilibrium steady-state TBA equations for three models: the sinh-Gordon model, the roaming trajectories model, and the sine-Gordon model at a particular reflectionless point. Based on the numerics, we conjecture that an infinite family of non-equilibrium $c$-functions, associated to the scaled cumulants, can be defined, which we interpret physically. We study the full scaled distribution function and find that it can be described by a set of independent Poisson processes. Finally, we show that the "additivity" property of the current, which is known to hold in CFT and was proposed to hold more generally, does not hold in general IQFT, that is $J(T_l,T_r)$ is not of the form $f(T_l)-f(T_r)$.

Energy transport in Heisenberg chains beyond the Luttinger liquid paradigm

Andrea De Luca, Jacopo Viti, Leonardo Mazza +1 more

We study the energy transport between two interacting spin chains which are initially separated, held at different temperatures, and subsequently put in contact. We consider the spin-1/2 XXZ model in the gapless regime and exploit its integrability properties to formulate an analytical ansatz for the nonequilibrium steady state even at temperatures where the low-energy Luttinger liquid description is not accurate. We apply our method to compute the steady energy current and benchmark it both with the known low-energy limit and at higher temperatures with numerical simulations. We find an excellent agreement even at high temperatures, where the Luttinger liquid prediction is shown to fail.

Hydrodynamics of massless integrable RG flows and a non-equilibrium c-theorem

D. X. Horváth

Abstract We study Euler scale hydrodynamics of massless integrable quantum field theories interpolating between two non-trivial renormalisation group fixed points after inhomogeneous quantum quenches. Using a partitioning protocol with left and right initial thermal states and the recently developed framework of generalised hydrodynamics, we focus on current and density profiles for the energy and momentum as a function of ξ = x/t, where both x and t are sent to infinity. Studying the first few members of the A n and D n massless flows we carry out a systematic treatment of these series and generalise our results to other unitary massless models. In our analysis we find that the profiles exhibit extended plateaux and that non-trivial bounds exist for the energy and momentum densities and currents in the non-equilibrium stationary state, i.e. when ξ = 0. To quantify the magnitude of currents and densities, dynamical central charges are defined and it is shown that the dynamical central charge for the energy current satisfies a certain monotonicity property. We discuss the connection of the Landauer-Büttiker formalism of transport with our results and show that this picture can account for some of the bounds for the currents and for the monotonicity of the dynamical central charge. These properties are shown to be present not only in massless flows but also in the massive sinh-Gordon model suggesting their general validity and the correctness of the Landauer-Büttiker interpretation of transport in integrable field theories. Our results thus imply the existence of a non-equilibrium c-theorem as well, at least in integrable models. Finally we also study the interesting low energy behaviour of the A2 model that corresponds to the massless flow from the tricritical to the critical Ising field theory.
