Abstract

The problem of calculation of electromagnetic field energy outside the transparency domain is discussed. It is shown that charged particle contribution to the energy of electromagnetic perturbations in the general case can be described in terms of bilinear combination of the dielectric polarizability of the medium. The explicit form of such contribution is found. The relations obtained are used to generalize the Planck's law to the case of absorptive medium.

Three-dimensional quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorbing inhomogeneous dielectrics

Ho Trung Dung, L. Knöll, Dirk‐Gunnar Welsch

A quantization scheme for the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the full electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous three-dimensional, dispersive, and absorbing dielectric medium is developed. The classical Maxwell equations with spatially varying and Kramers-Kronig consistent permittivity are regarded as operator-valued field equations, introducing additional current- and charge-density operator fields in order to take into account the noise associated with the dissipation in the medium. It is shown that the equal-time commutation relations between the fundamental electromagnetic fields $\mathbf{E}^$ and $\mathbf{B}^$ and the potentials $\mathbf{A}^$ and $\stackrel{^}{\ensuremath{\varphi}}$ in the Coulomb gauge can be expressed in terms of the Green tensor of the classical problem. From the Green tensors for bulk material and an inhomogeneous medium consisting of two bulk dielectrics with a common planar interface it is explicitly proven that the well-known equal-time commutation relations of QED are preserved.

Quantum optics of dielectric media

Peter W. Milonni

In this work the electromagnetic field in a dielectric medium is quantized in a simple and straightforward way based on the classical expression for the energy density for the case of weak absorption. The quantized field leads to expressions for spontaneous and stimulated emission rates, and gain and absorption coefficients, for the general case of a dispersive dielectric host medium. Local field corrections, when they apply, arise in the same manner as in classical electromagnetic theory. The theory also leads to a radiative level shift dependent on the dispersion of the dielectric, and this shift may be interpreted as a van der Waals interaction between the guest atom and the atoms of the host medium.>

Field Quantization and Radiative Processes in Dispersive Dielectric Media

Peter W. Milonni

The electromagnetic field in a dispersive dielectric medium is quantized in a straightforward manner based on the classical expression for the field energy away from absorption resonances. Results for spontaneous and stimulated radiative rates, and absorption and gain coefficients, are obtained and compared with other expressions in the literature. Local field corrections, when they exist, are included. A level shift for an atom in a host dielectric medium is obtained and interpreted as the van der Waals interaction between that atom and its neighbours in the host medium.

Quantization of the electromagnetic field in dielectrics

B. Hüttner, Stephen Mark Barnett

We present a fully canonical quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in dispersive and lossy linear dielectrics. This scheme is based on a microscopic model, in which the medium is represented by a collection of interacting matter fields. We calculate the exact eigenoperators for the coupled system and express the electromagnetic field operators in terms of them. The dielectric constant of the medium is explicitly derived and is shown to satisfy the Kramers-Kronig relations. We apply these results to treat the propagation of light in dielectrics and obtain simple expressions for the electromagnetic field in the medium in terms of space-dependent creation and annihilation operators. These operators satisfy a set of equal-space commutation relations and obey spatial Langevin equations of evolution. This justifies the use of such operators in phenomenological models in quantum optics. We also obtain two interesting relationships between the group and the phase velocity in dielectrics.

Electromagnetic field quantization in absorbing dielectrics

Reza Matloob, R. Loudon, Stephen Mark Barnett +1 more

The electromagnetic field is quantized in dielectric media that show both loss and dispersion. The complex dielectric function of the medium is assumed to be a known function and the loss is modeled by Langevin forces in the forms of noise current operators. The noise current correlation function is related to the assumed dielectric function by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Field quantization is carried out for the infinite homogeneous dielectric, the semi-infinite dielectric, and the dielectric slab, where the fields in the second and third cases are restricted to propagation perpendicular to the dielectric surfaces. The forms of the vector potential operator are obtained in the different spatial regions for all three geometries, and in each case the required canonical commutation relation for the vector potential and its conjugate generalized momentum operator is verified. The spatial dependence of the vacuum field fluctuations is calculated for the two dielectric geometries that have surfaces.

Quantum phenomena in nonstationary media

V. V. Dodonov, A. B. Klimov, Dmitri E. Nikonov

The problem of electromagnetic-field quantization in time-dependent nonuniform linear nondispersive media is investigated. The explicit formulas for the number of photons generated from the initial vacuum state due to the change in time of dielectric permeability of the medium are obtained in the case when the spatial and temporal dependences are factorized. The concrete time dependences include adiabatic and sudden changes of permeability, the parametric resonance at twice the eigenfrequency of the mode, Epstein's symmetric and transition profiles, ``temporal Fabry-P\'erot resonator,'' and some others. The upper and lower bounds for the squeezing and correlation coefficients of the field in the final state are given in terms of the reflection coefficient from an equivilent potential barrier or the number of created quanta. The problem of impulse propagation in a spatially uniform but time-dependent dielectric medium is discussed.
