Abstract

We demonstrate an ultrabright narrow-band two-photon source at the 1.5 µm telecom wavelength for long-distance quantum communication. By utilizing a bow-tie cavity, we obtain a cavity enhancement factor of 4.06 × 10 4 . Our measurement of the second-order correlation function G (2) (τ) reveals that the linewidth of 2.4 MHz has been hitherto unachieved in the 1.5 µm telecom band. This two-photon source is useful for obtaining a high absorption probability close to unity by quantum memories set inside quantum repeater nodes. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, the observed spectral brightness of 3.94 × 10 5 pairs/(s·MHz·mW) is also the highest reported over all wavelengths.

Cavity-enhanced two-photon source emitting narrow linewidth telecommunication wavelength photons for improved quantum memory-coupling efficiency enabling long-distance quantum communications

Ryo Onozawa, Daisuke Yoshida, Kazuya Niizeki +1 more

Abstract In long-distance quantum communication using quantum repeaters with quantum memories, entangled photons at telecommunication wavelengths that can be coupled to quantum memory with high efficiency are required. Typically, entangled photons are generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). However, the phase-matching bandwidth of SPDC is more than 100 GHz, which is much broader than the bandwidth of a Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 quantum memory (with overall bandwidth of ∼10 GHz while the bandwidth of each frequency channel is ∼10 MHz) suitable for frequency-multiplexed quantum repeaters. In this study, nondegenerate SPDC (1550 nm and 995 nm) inside an optical cavity is used to obtain a narrow linewidth and cluster width of SPDC to match the Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 bandwidth. We also developed a cavity control mechanism that can fulfill the doubly resonant condition. The developed two-photon source can maximize the coupling efficiency with Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 by introducing wavelength conversion and is promising for use in a quantum repeater.

Triggered telecom C-band single-photon source with high brightness, high indistinguishability and sub-GHz spectral linewidth

Raphael Joos, Stephanie Bauer, Rupp, Christian +8 more

Long-range, terrestrial quantum networks will require high brightness single-photon sources emitting in the telecom C-band for maximum transmission rate. Many applications additionally demand triggered operation with high indistinguishability and narrow spectral linewidth. This would enable the efficient implementation of photonic gate operations and photon storage in quantum memories, as for instance required for a quantum repeater. Especially, semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have shown these properties in the near-infrared regime. However, the simultaneous demonstration of all these properties in the telecom C-band has been elusive. Here, we present a coherently (incoherently) optically-pumped narrow-band (0.8 GHz) triggered single-photon source in the telecom C-band. The source shows simultaneously high single-photon purity with $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.026$ ($g^{(2)}(0) = 0.014$), high two-photon interference visibility of 0.508 (0.664) and high application-ready rates of 0.75 MHz (1.45 MHz) of polarized photons. The source is based on a QD coupled to a circular Bragg grating cavity combined with spectral filtering. Coherent (incoherent) operation is performed via the novel SUPER scheme (phonon-assisted excitation).

Cavity-enhanced narrow bandwidth photon pairs generation at the telecom wavelength with a triple resonance configuration

Zhi‐Yuan Zhou, Dong-Sheng Ding, Yan Li +3 more

In this paper, we present a narrow bandwidth source at the telecom wavelength based on type II PPKTP crystal inside an optical cavity. Simultaneous resonances of the pump and the two down-converted fields are achieved by special design of the cavity. This is a triple resonances optical parametric oscillator (OPO) far below threshold, which generates photon pairs at around 1560 nm with a bandwidth of 8 MHz. A coherence time of 27.7 ns is estimate by a time correlation measurement, and the estimated photon pairs generating rate is 134 s-1MHz-1mW-1. As entangled photon pairs in the telecom regime is suitable for long distance transmission and manipulation, this source is desirable for the demands of quantum communication.
