Abstract

Weak measurement amplification, which is considered as a very promising scheme in precision measurement, has been applied to various small physical quantities estimation. Since many quantities can be converted to phase signal, it is thus interesting and important to consider measuring ultra-small longitudinal phase shifts by using weak measurement. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel weak measurement amplification based ultra-small longitudinal phase estimation, which is suitable for polarization interferometry. We realize one order of magnitude amplification measurement of small phase signal directly introduced by Liquid Crystal Variable Retarder and show its robust to finite visibility of interference. Our results may find important applications in high-precision measurements, such as gravitational waves detection.

Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel weak measurement amplification-based small longitudinal phase estimation, which is suitable for polarization interferometry. We realize one order of magnitude amplification measurement of a small phase signal directly introduced by a liquid crystal variable retarder and show that it is robust to the imperfection of interference. Besides, we analyze the effect of magnification error which is never considered in the previous works, and find the constraint on the magnification. Our results may find important applications in high-precision measurements, e.g., gravitational wave detection.

Experimental Ultra-small Longitudinal Phase Estimation via Weak Measurement Amplification

Mengjun Hu, Xiao‐Min Hu, Bi‐Heng Liu +4 more

Weak value amplification has been applied to various small physical quantities estimation, however there still lacks a practical feasible protocol to amplify ultra-small longitudinal phase, which is of importance in high precision measurement. Very recently, a different amplification protocol within the framework of weak measurements is proposed to solve this problem, which is capable of measuring any ultra-small longitudinal phase signal that conventional interferometry tries to do. Here we experimentally demonstrate this weak measurements amplification protocol of ultra-small longitudinal phase and realize one order of magnitude amplification in the same technical condition, which verifies the validity of the protocol and show higher precision and sensitivity than conventional interferometry. Our results significantly broaden the area of applications of weak measurements and may play an important role in high precision measurements.

Phase amplification in optical interferometry with weak measurement

Li Li, Yuan Li, You-Lang Zhang +5 more

Improving the phase resolution of interferometry is crucial for high-precision measurements of various physical quantities. Systematic phase errors dominate the phase uncertainties in most realistic optical interferometers. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a weak measurement scheme to considerably suppress the phase uncertainties by the direct amplification of the phase shift in optical interferometry. Given an initial ultrasmall phase shift between orthogonal polarization states, we observe a phase amplification effect with a factor of 388. Our weak measurement scheme provides a practical approach to significantly improve the interferometric phase resolution, which is favorable for precision measurement applications.

Realization of ultra-small stress birefringence detection with weak-value amplification technique

Yongsheng Wang, Shizhen Chen, Shuangchun Wen +1 more

How to realize the detection of tiny birefringence is an important but challenging issue for investigations and applications in optics. In weak measurements, weak-value amplification has been widely applied to the precise estimation of time delay. Here, we show that the linear amplification in weak measurements has the potential to outperform standard weak-value amplification for ultra-small parameter characterization. The higher measurement accuracy in the linear amplification enables us to achieve a measurement of stress-induced birefringence with a high resolution of 5×10−10. Compared with existing methods, the accuracy based on weak measurements for birefringence detection can improve two orders of magnitude. Our method may have important applications in a variety of fields involving the precise measurement of time delay or birefringence.

Gravitational Wave Detection via Weak Measurements Amplification

Mengjun Hu, Yong-Sheng Zhang

A universal amplification scheme of ultra-small phase based on weak measurements is given and a weak measurements amplification based laser interferometer gravitational-wave observatory (WMA-LIGO) is suggested. The WMA-LIGO has potential to amplify the ultra-small phase signal to at least $10^{3}$ order of magnitude such that the sensitivity and bandwidth of gravitational-wave detector can be further improved. Our results not only shed a new light on the quantum measurement but also open a new way to the gravitational-wave detection.

Cascaded Weak Measurements Amplification of Ultra-small Phases

Mengjun Hu, Yong-Sheng Zhang

The weak measurements based amplification of ultra-small phase was proposed in our previous work. Due to the technical imperfections, the ability of amplification is usually limited in practice. Here we introduce the concept of cascaded weak measurements amplification so that the ability of weak measurements amplification can be further improved. A formula of determining the cascaded number of weak measurements amplification is derived. The method presented here could be found useful in high precision measurement e.g., gravitational waves detection.
