Abstract

We study the effects of bond randomness in the spin-$1/2$ ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular Heisenberg model using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group. With increasing bond randomness, we identify a randomness-induced spin-liquid-like phase without any magnetic order, dimer order, spin-glass order, or valence-bond-glass order. The finite-size scaling of gaps suggests the gapless nature of both spin triplet and singlet excitations, which is further supported by the broad continuum of the dynamical spin structure factor. By studying the bipartite entanglement spectrum of the system on cylinder geometry, we identify the features of the low-lying entanglement spectrum in the spin-liquid-like phase, which may distinguish this randomness-induced spin-liquid-like phase and the intrinsic spin-liquid phase in the clean ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular Heisenberg model. We further discuss the nature of this spin-liquid-like phase and the indication of our results for understanding spin-liquid-like materials with triangular-lattice structure.

Competing spin-liquid states in the spin- 1 2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Wen-Jun Hu, Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu +1 more

We study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with antiferromagnetic first- $({J}_{1})$ and second- $({J}_{2})$ nearest-neighbor interactions using density matrix renormalization group. By studying the spin correlation function, we find a ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ magnetic order phase for ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.07{J}_{1}$ and a stripe antiferromagnetic phase for ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.15{J}_{1}$. Between these two phases, we identify a spin-liquid region characterized by exponential decaying spin and dimer correlations, as well as large spin singlet and triplet excitation gaps on finite-size systems. We find two near degenerating ground states with distinct properties in two sectors, which indicates more than one spin-liquid candidate in this region. While the sector with spinons is found to respect time reversal symmetry, the even sector without spinons breaks such a symmetry for finite-size systems. Furthermore, we detect the signature of the fractionalization by following the evolution of different ground states with inserting spin flux into the cylinder system. Moreover, by tuning the anisotropic bond coupling, we explore the nature of the spin-liquid phase and find the optimal parameter region for gapped ${Z}_{2}$ spin liquids.

Spin liquid phase of the S = 1 2 J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Zhenyue Zhu, Steven R. White

We study the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$ with the density matrix renormalization group, on long open cylinders with widths up to nine lattice spacings. In an intermediate ${J}_{2}$ region $0.06\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$, we find evidence for a spin liquid (SL) state with short range spin-spin, bond-bond, and chiral correlation lengths, bordered by a classical ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel ordered state at small ${J}_{2}$ and by a two sublattice collinear magnetically ordered state at larger ${J}_{2}$. Focusing on ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.1$, we find a number of signatures of a gapped SL phase.

Topological Spin Liquid Phase in the Spin-$1/2$ Triangular Heisenberg Model

Wen-Jun Hu, Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu +1 more

We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the antiferromagnetic first (J1) and second nearest-neighbor (J2) interactions using density matrix renormalization group. By studying the spin correlation function, we find a 120◦ magnetic order phase for J2 . 0.08J1 and a stripe antiferromagnetic phase for J2 & 0.16J2. Between these two phases, we identify a gapped spin liquid phase characterized by the exponential decaying spin and dimer correlations, as well as finite spin singlet and triplet excitation gaps. We also find two topological degenerating ground states in two topological sectors. Furthermore, we detect the signature of the fractionalization by following the evolution of different ground states with inserting spin flux into the cylinder system. While the sector with spinon is found to respect the time reveral symmetry, the even sector without a spinon may break such a symmetry. We discuss the implications of numerical results for the nature of the topological spin liquid phase.

Gapless spin liquid and valence-bond solid in the J1 - J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice: Insights from singlet and triplet excitations

Francesco Ferrari, Federico Becca

The spin-$1/2$ ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice represents one of the simplest examples in which the effects of magnetic interactions may suppress magnetic order, eventually leading to a pure quantum phase with no local order parameters. This model has been extensively studied in the last three decades, with conflicting results. Here, by using Gutzwiller-projected wave functions and recently developed methods to assess the low-energy spectrum, we show the existence of a level crossing between the lowest-energy triplet and singlet excitations for ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\approx}0.54$. This fact supports the existence of a phase transition between a gapless spin liquid (which is stable for $0.48\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.54$) and a valence-bond solid (for $0.54\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.6$), even though no clear sign of dimer order is visible in the correlations functions. These results, which confirm recent density-matrix renormalization calculations on cylindrical clusters [L. Wang and A. W. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 107202 (2018)], reconcile the contradicting results obtained within different approaches over the years.

Frustration-induced Quantum Spin Liquid Behavior in the s = 1/2 Random-bond Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Zigzag Chain

Kazuki Uematsu, Toshiya Hikihara, Hikaru Kawamura

Recent studies have revealed that the randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like state is stabilized in certain frustrated quantum magnets in two and three dimensions. In order to clarify the nature of this gapless QSL-like state, we investigate both zero- and finite-temperature properties of the random-bond one-dimensional (1D) $s=12$ Heisenberg model with the competing nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by means of the exact diagonalization, density-matrix renormalization-group and Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that, on increasing the frustration $J_2$, the gapless nonmagnetic state stabilized in the unfrustrated model with $J_2=0$, the {\it unfrustrated\} random-singlet (RS) state, exhibits a phase transition into different gapless nonmagnetic state, the {\it frustrated\} RS state. This frustrated RS state in 1D has properties quite similar to the randomness-induced QSL-like state recently identified in 2D and 3D frustrated magnets exhibiting the $T$-linear low-temperature ($T$) specific heat, while the unfrustrated RS state is more or less specific to the unfrustrated 1D system exhibiting the $\sim 1(\log T)^3$ low-$T$ specific heat. Universal features and the robustness against perturbations of the frustrated RS state are emphasized.

Unveiling nonmagnetic phase and many-body entanglement in two-dimensional random quantum magnets Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$

Dian Wu, Fan Yang, Giuseppe Carleo

We apply a random-plaquette $J_1$-$J_2$ model on the square lattice to capture the physics of a series of spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet compounds Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$. With the input of experimentally relevant coupling strengths, our exact diagonalization (ED) study probes the ground state properties beyond previous linear spin-wave approach. An intermediate range of $x \in [0.08, 0.55]$ is identified for a nonmagnetic phase without the long-range Néel or stripe order. The absence of both valence-bond-glass order and spin-glass non-ergodic dynamics renders its nature intriguing. Deep inside this phase around $x = 0.3$, we observe signatures potentially linked to randomness-induced short-range spin-liquid-like (SLL) states, including close to zero spin-freezing parameter, vanishing spin-spin correlation beyond nearest neighbors, almost uniform static spin structure factor, as well as a broad tail in the dynamical spin structure factor. The nonmagnetic phase also features multipartite entanglement in the ground state witnessed by quantum Fisher information (QFI), which exhibits universal scaling behaviors at quantum critical points.
