Abstract

It has been shown earlier [Phys. Rev. D 72, 085006 (2005), Phys. Rev. D 73, 065010 (2006)] that, in the mixed space, there is an unexpected simple relation between any finite temperature graph and its zero temperature counterpart through a multiplicative scalar operator (termed thermal operator) which carries the entire temperature dependence. This holds only in the imaginary time formalism and the closed time path ($\ensuremath{\sigma}=0$) of the real time formalism (as well as for its conjugate $\ensuremath{\sigma}=1$). We study the origin of this operator from the more fundamental Bogoliubov transformation which acts, in the momentum space, on the doubled space of fields in the real time formalisms [Collective Phenomena 2, 55 (1975), Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 10, 1755 (1996), Thermo Field Dynamics and Condensed States (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1982), Phys. Rev. D 93, 125028 (2016)]. We show how the ($2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$) Bogoliubov transformation matrix naturally leads to the scalar thermal operator for $\ensuremath{\sigma}=0$, 1 while it fails for any other value $0<\ensuremath{\sigma}<1$. This analysis also suggests that a generalized scalar thermal operator description, in the mixed space, is possible even for $0<\ensuremath{\sigma}<1$. We also show the existence of a scalar thermal operator relation in the momentum space.

Generalizations of the thermal Bogoliubov transformation

Elmfors, P., Hiroomi Umezawa

The thermal Bogoliubov transformation in thermo field dynamics is generalized in two respects. First, a generalization of the $\\alpha$--degree of freedom to tilde non--conserving representations is considered. Secondly, the usual $2\\times2$ Bogoliubov matrix is extended to a $4\\times4$ matrix including mixing of modes with non--trivial multiparticle correlations. The analysis is carried out for both bosons and fermions.

A UNIFIED FORMALISM OF THERMAL QUANTUM FIELD THEORY

H. Chu, Hiroomi Umezawa

We present a comprehensive review of the most fundamental and practical aspects of thermo-field dynamics (TFD), including some of the most recent developments in the field. To make TFD fully consistent, some suitable changes in the structure of the thermal doublets and the Bogoliubov transformation matrices have been made. A close comparison between TFD and the Schwinger-Keldysh closed time path formalism (SKF) is presented. We find that TFD and SKF are in many ways the same in form; in particular, the two approaches are identical in stationary situations. However, TFD and SKF are quite different in time-dependent nonequilibrium situations. The main source of this difference is that the time evolution of the density matrix itself is ignored in SKF while in TFD it is replaced by a time-dependent Bogoliubov transformation. In this sense TFD is a better candidate for time-dependent quantum field theory. Even in equilibrium situations, TFD has some remarkable advantages over the Matsubara approach and SKF, the most notable being the Feynman diagram recipes, which we will present. We will show that the calculations of two-point functions are simplified, instead of being complicated, by the matrix nature of the formalism. We will present some explicit calculations using TFD, including space-time inhomogeneous situations and the vacuum polarization in equilibrium relativistic QED.

QUANTUM GROUPS AND THERMO FIELD DYNAMICS

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Giuseppe Vitiello

The algebraic structure of Thermo Field Dynamics for bosons can be fully incorporated in the q-deformation of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra hq (1) . The doubling of the degrees of freedom, the set of the tilde-conjugation rules, the Bogoliubov transformation and its generator have a direct and simple interpretation in terms of operators and of properties of hq (1) . The notion of “thermal degree of freedom” introduced by Umezawa also finds a more specific formalization since the corresponding “thermal conjugate momentum” can be formally introduced, thus providing us with a set of canonical “thermal” variables.

Thermal Bogoliubov transformation in nuclear structure theory

A. I. Vdovin, A. A. Dzhioev

Thermal Bogoliubov transformation is an essential ingredient of the thermo field dynamics—the real time formalism in quantum field and many-body theories at finite temperatures developed by H. Umezawa and coworkers. The approach to study properties of hot nuclei which is based on the extension of the well-known Quasiparticle-Phonon Model to finite temperatures employing the TFD formalism is presented. A distinctive feature of the QPM-TFD combination is a possibility to go beyond the standard approximations like the thermal Hartree-Fock or the thermal RPA ones.

Bogoliubov Matrices in Thermal Field Theory

Hong-Hua Xu

It is found that Bogoliubov matrices introduced in thermo field dynamics can be generally derived for an arbitrary value of the time-path parameter , by the closed-time path approach in a natural and simple way. Based on the generalized Bogoliubov matrices the meaning of widely believed -independence of thermal field theory is discussed.

TIME-SPACE DEPENDENT FORMULATION IN THERMOFIELD DYNAMICS

Kouji Nakamura, Hiroomi Umezawa, Y. Yamanaka

The recently developed formulation of time-dependent non-equilibrium thermofield dynamics (TFD) is extended to spatially inhomogeneous field systems in this paper. This inhomogeneous formalism is constructed from introducing momentum mixing thermal Bogoliubov transformation. The momentum mixing number density in the Bogoliubov matrix is related to the number density distribution defined at each space-time point which is to be observed.
