Abstract

This paper compares and evaluates a set of nonparametric mutual information estimators with the goal of providing a novel toolset to progress in the analysis of the capacity of the nonlinear optical channel, which is currently an open problem. In the first part of the paper, the methods of the study are presented. The second part details their application to several optically-related channels to highlight their features.

Calculation of mutual information for nonlinear optical fiber communication channel at large SNR within path-integral formalism

А. В. Резниченко, Ivan Sergeevich Terekhov, Sergei K. Turitsyn

Using the path-integral technique we calculate the mutual information for the fiber optical channel modelled by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with additive Gaussian noise. At large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) we present the mutual information through the path-integral which is convenient for the perturbative expansion both in nonlinearity and dispersion. In the leading order in 1/SNR we demonstrate that the mutual information is determined through the averaged logarithm of the normalization factor Λ of the conditional probability density function P [ Y | X ]. In the limit of small noise and small nonlinearity we derive analytically the first nonzero nonlinear correction to the mutual information for the channel. For the arbitrary nonlinearity we restrict the mutual information by the low bound obtained from the Jensen's inequality and analyze the bound for the case of large dispersion.

Capacity Limits of Information Transport in Fiber-Optic Networks

René-Jean Essiambre, G.J. Foschini, Gerhard G. Kramer +1 more

The instantaneous optical Kerr effect in optical fibers is a nonlinear phenomenon that can impose limits on the ability of fiber-optic communication systems to transport information. We present here a conservative estimate of the "fiber channel" capacity in an optically routed network. We show that the fiber capacity per unit bandwidth for a given distance significantly exceeds current record experimental demonstrations.

Nonlinear Optical Fiber Channel Capacity Estimation

Xiaoping Zhang

For studying the accurate impacts of nonlinear fiber propagation on channel capacity conveniently, a numerical calculating method derived from signal power transmission property is presented, its dependences on input pulses peak power is obtained, and spontaneous emission noise intensity, nonlinear coefficients and group velocity dispersion of fiber are amplified. It can also conclude that the improvement of nonlinear channel capacity will not go with the improvement of input signal power especially for larger power input case, which can be used as a guideline to calculate nonlinear channel capacity theoretically and improve nonlinear channel capacity in technical application.

Information capacity of nonlinear fiber-optical systems

Boyu Wu, E. Narimanov

We develop information-theoretical description of nonlinear optical communication systems. We present a non-perturbative calculation of the information capacity for different modulation formats, and demonstrate that fiber nonlinearity leads to exponential suppression of the channel capacity.

MODELING OF FIBER-OPTIC COMMUNICATION CHANNEL FOR QUANTUM CRYPTOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS

Vladimir Alexandrovich Minaev, I. D. Korolev, Кулиш Ольга Александровна +1 more

The existing methods of information delivery to the strategic and tactical management of many government agencies are expensive, not always reliable and efficient. Therefore, quantum cryptographic systems (QCS) have been actively developed in recent years. However, there are problems with the use of the QCS associated with the reliability of information transfer. First, the existing fiber-optic communication channels (FOCC) are not designed to transmit single-photon signals, which leads to the complexity of their cryptographic protection. The second is insufficiently methodically developed calculation of energy losses and errors in the evaluation of the characteristics of information transfer in FOCC QCS. In article the analysis of the energy loss factors in the classical fiber-optic channel is carried out and the additive loss formula is discussed in detail. Then we consider the fiber-optic channel of quantum information transmission with the use of integrated optical devices. The additive formula of optical losses in such a channel is discussed. The features of losses in integrated optical devices are shown. The features of quantum cryptographic system of information transmission are considered. As a result, the model of FOCC QCS taking into account energy losses is presented, which allows competently in theoretical terms and visualize the passage of information through modern quantum cryptographically secure telecommunications while providing control in government structures.
