Even-parity precession protocol for detecting nonclassicality and entanglement

Jinyan Chen, Jackson Tiong, Lin Htoo Zaw +1 more

We introduce an even-parity precession protocol that can detect the nonclassicality of some quantum states using only measurements of a uniformly precessing variable at different points in time. Depending on the system under study, the protocol may detect the Wigner negativity of a single quantum harmonic oscillator or of a single spin $j\ensuremath{\ge}2$; the non-Gaussian entanglement of two harmonic oscillators; or genuine multipartite entanglement of a spin ensemble, whose total spin is an integer. Unlike in other nonclassicality tests, simultaneous or sequential measurements are not required. Our protocol can also detect states that commute with the parity operator, which were missed by similar protocols built from Tsirelson's original precession protocol. This work also closes a long-standing gap by showing the possibility of detecting the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entanglement of an even number of qubits using only collective spin measurements.

Dynamics of Two Overlapping Spin Ensembles Interacting by Spin Exchange with Large Rb Magnetization Field

Yao Chen, Jiancheng Fang

change interaction. In a K-Rb- 21 Ne co-magnetometer which was used for rotation sensing, Rb atomic spins and the 21 Ne nuclear spins couple together by spin exchange. Due to the large Rb density and the Fermi contact constant of Rb- 21 Ne pair, the magnetization field of Rb atomic spins is much larger than that of the K in a K- 3 He co-magnetometer. At the co-magnetometer working point, the precession frequency of Rb atomic spins are much larger than that of the 21 Ne spins. The decay rate and precession frequency of 21 Ne atoms is much smaller than that of the point when the precession frequencies of the Rb and 21 Ne atoms are the same. In this experiment, the dynamics of the Rb- 21 Ne pair at different holding magnetic field point were studied. The frequency response of the co-magnetometer to oscillating magnetic field at different holding magnetic field point was also studied.

Exploring out-of-equilibrium quantum magnetism and thermalization in a spin-3 many-body dipolar lattice system

S. Lepoutre, Johannes Schachenmayer, Lucas Gabardos +7 more

Understanding quantum thermalization through entanglement build-up in isolated quantum systems addresses fundamental questions on how unitary dynamics connects to statistical physics. Here, we study the spin dynamics and approach towards local thermal equilibrium of a macroscopic ensemble of S = 3 spins prepared in a pure coherent spin state, tilted compared to the magnetic field, under the effect of magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. The experiment uses a unit filled array of 104 chromium atoms in a three dimensional optical lattice, realizing the spin-3 XXZ Heisenberg model. The buildup of quantum correlation during the dynamics, especially as the angle approaches pi/2, is supported by comparison with an improved numerical quantum phase-space method and further confirmed by the observation that our isolated system thermalizes under its own dynamics, reaching a steady state consistent with the one extracted from a thermal ensemble with a temperature dictated from the system's energy. This indicates a scenario of quantum thermalization which is tied to the growth of entanglement entropy. Although direct experimental measurements of the Renyi entropy in our macroscopic system are unfeasible, the excellent agreement with the theory, which can compute this entropy, does indicate entanglement build-up.
