Absence of Long-Range Order in a Triangular Spin System with Dipolar Interactions

Abstract

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice is perhaps the best known example of frustrated magnets, but it orders at low temperatures. Recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations find that the next nearest neighbor interaction J_{2} enhances the frustration, and it leads to a spin liquid for J_{2}/J_{1}∈(0.08,0.15). In addition, a DMRG study of a dipolar Heisenberg model with longer range interactions gives evidence for a spin liquid at a small dipole tilting angle θ∈[0,10°). In both cases, the putative spin liquid region appears to be small. Here, we show that for the triangular lattice dipolar Heisenberg model, a robust quantum paramagnetic phase exists in a surprisingly wide region, θ∈[0,54°), for dipoles tilted along the lattice diagonal direction. We obtain the phase diagram of the model by functional renormalization group (RG), which treats all magnetic instabilities on equal footing. The quantum paramagnetic phase is characterized by a smooth continuous flow of vertex functions and spin susceptibility down to the lowest RG scale, in contrast to the apparent breakdown of RG flow in phases with stripe or spiral order. Our finding points to a promising direction to search for quantum spin liquids in ultracold dipolar molecules.

Renormalization group analysis of dipolar Heisenberg model on square lattice

Ahmet Keleş, Erhai Zhao

We present a detailed functional renormalization group analysis of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ dipolar Heisenberg model on square lattice. This model is similar to the well-known ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model and describes the pseudospin degrees of freedom of polar molecules confined in deep optical lattice with long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. Previous study of this model based on tensor network ansatz indicates a paramagnetic ground state for certain dipole tilting angles which can be tuned in experiments to control the exchange couplings. The tensor ansatz formulated on a small cluster unit cell is inadequate to describe the spiral order, and therefore the phase diagram at high azimuthal tilting angles remains undetermined. Here, we obtain the full phase diagram of the model from numerical pseudofermion functional renormalization group calculations. We show that an extended quantum paramagnetic phase is realized between the N\'eel and stripe/spiral phases. In this region, the spin susceptibility flows smoothly down to the lowest numerical renormalization group scales with no sign of divergence or breakdown of the flow, in sharp contrast to the flow towards the long-range-ordered phases. Our results provide further evidence that the dipolar Heisenberg model is a fertile ground for quantum spin liquids.

Frustrated Magnetism of Dipolar Molecules on a Square Optical Lattice: Prediction of a Quantum Paramagnetic Ground State

Haiyuan Zou, Erhai Zhao, W. Vincent Liu

Motivated by the experimental realization of quantum spin models of polar molecule KRb in optical lattices, we analyze the spin 1/2 dipolar Heisenberg model with competing anisotropic, long-range exchange interactions. We show that, by tilting the orientation of dipoles using an external electric field, the dipolar spin system on square lattice comes close to a maximally frustrated region similar, but not identical, to that of the J_{1}-J_{2} model. This provides a simple yet powerful route to potentially realize a quantum spin liquid without the need for a triangular or kagome lattice. The ground state phase diagrams obtained from Schwinger-boson and spin-wave theories consistently show a spin disordered region between the Néel, stripe, and spiral phase. The existence of a finite quantum paramagnetic region is further confirmed by an unbiased variational ansatz based on tensor network states and a tensor renormalization group.

Spin liquid phase of the S = 1 2 J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Zhenyue Zhu, Steven R. White

We study the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$ with the density matrix renormalization group, on long open cylinders with widths up to nine lattice spacings. In an intermediate ${J}_{2}$ region $0.06\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$, we find evidence for a spin liquid (SL) state with short range spin-spin, bond-bond, and chiral correlation lengths, bordered by a classical ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel ordered state at small ${J}_{2}$ and by a two sublattice collinear magnetically ordered state at larger ${J}_{2}$. Focusing on ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.1$, we find a number of signatures of a gapped SL phase.

Phase diagram of a bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 model on the triangular lattice from density matrix renormalization group simulations

Aaron Szasz, Chong Wang, Yin-Chen He

We investigate a highly frustrated spin-1 model on the triangular lattice, with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic $S\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}S$ interactions and nearest-neighbor ${(S\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}S)}^{2}$ interactions. Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we find three magnetically ordered phases, namely ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ spiral order, stripe order, and tetrahedral order, as well as two spin nematic phases: ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar. While our data could be consistent with a spin liquid phase between the ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ spiral and antiferroquadrupolar orders, the more likely scenario is a direct continuous transition between these two orders.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Yi‐Fan Jiang, Hong‐Chen Jiang

We study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- $({J}_{1})$, next-nearest- $({J}_{2})$, and third-neighbor $({J}_{3})$ interactions by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to ${L}_{x}=48$ and circumference ${L}_{y}=6--12$. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model is gapped, which is characterized by the absence of a gapless mode and by short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of ${J}_{3}$ interaction, we find that a critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi long ranged and decay as a power law at long distances.

Global phase diagram and quantum spin liquids in a spin- 12 triangular antiferromagnet

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, Jian‐Xin Zhu +2 more

We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor ${J}_{1}>0$, the next-nearest-neighobr ${J}_{2}>0$ Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}({\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{j})\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{k}$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing ${J}_{2}$ (${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.3$) and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$ (${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, stripe, and noncoplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model ($0.08\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$. We also compute the spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest a large gap in the odd topological sector but a small or vanishing gap in the even sector. We discuss the implications of our results on the nature of the spin liquid phases.
