Abstract

We study the ground state phase diagram of a two dimensional mixed-spin system of coupled alternating spin-1 and 1/2 chains with a stripe supersolid phase. Utilizing different analytical and numerical approaches such as mean field approximation, cluster mean field theory and linear spin wave theory, we demonstrate that our system displays a rich ground state phase diagram including novel stripe supersolid, solids with different fillings and super-counterfluid phases, in addition to a stripe solid with half filling, superfluid and Mott insulating phases. In order to find a minimal mixed-spin model for stripe supersolidity, in the second part of the paper we consider two kinds of mixed-spin system of coupled alternating spin-1 and 1/2 chains with (i) anisotropic nearest neighbor interactions, (ii) anisotropic hoppings and study their ground state phase diagrams. We demonstrate that, for the systems with uniform hoppings, the repulsive intra-chains interactions are necessary for stripe supersolidity. In this case the minimal two dimensional mixed-spin model is a system of spin-1 and spin-1/2 XXZ chains, interacting via Ising Hamiltonian. In the case of anisotropic hoppings, a system of coupled Ising chains is the minimal model.

Supersolid phases in the bosonic extended Hubbard model

Kwai-Kong Ng, Yung‐Chung Chen

We present a comprehensive numerical study on the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional hard core bosonic extended Hubbard model with nearest $({V}_{1})$ and next nearest neighbor $({V}_{2})$ repulsions. In addition to the quantum solid and superfluid phases, we report the existence of a striped supersolid and three-quarter (quarter)-filled supersolid at commensurate density $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.75$ (0.25) due to the interplay of ${V}_{1}$ and ${V}_{2}$ interactions. The nature of the three-quarter-filled supersolid and the associated quantum solid will be discussed. The observed quantum phase transition between the two supersolids of different symmetries is found to be first order.

Supersolid Phase in Spin Dimer XXZ Systems under a Magnetic Field

Kwai-Kong Ng, T. K. Lee

Using the quantum Monte Carlo method, we study, under external magnetic fields, the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional spin S=1/2 dimer model with an anisotropic intraplane antiferromagnetic coupling. With the anisotropy 4 greater/approximately Delta greater/approximately 3, a supersolid phase characterized by a nonuniform Bose condensate density that breaks translational symmetry is found. The rich phase diagram also contains a checkerboard solid, an antiferromagnet in the z axis, and a superfluid phase formed by S(z)= +1 spin triplets which has a finite staggered magnetization in the in-plane direction. As we show, the model can be realized as a consequence of including the next nearest neighbor coupling among dimers and our results suggest that spin dimer systems may be an ideal model system to study the supersolid phase.

Ground-state phase diagram of the two-dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model

Takahiro Ohgoe, Takafumi Suzuki, Naoki Kawashima

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the soft-core Bose-Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor repulsion on a square lattice by using an unbiased quantum Monte Carlo method. In contrast to a previous study [P. Sengupta et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 207202 (2005)], we present the ground-state phase diagrams up to high hopping amplitudes. As a result, in addition to the known supersolid above half-filling, we find a supersolid phase below and at half-filling for high hopping amplitudes. In addition, for a strong nearest-neighbor repulsion, we show that the supersolid phase occupies a remarkably broad region in the phase diagram. These results are in agreement with the results of the Gutzwiller mean-field approximation [M. Iskin, Phys. Rev. A 83, 051606(R) (2011); T. Kimura, Phys. Rev. A 84, 063630 (2011)]. However, it turns out that the regions of the supersolid phases are significantly smaller than the mean-field results.

Stripes and spin-density waves in the doped two-dimensional Hubbard model: Ground state phase diagram

Hao Xu, Hao Shi, Ettore Vitali +2 more

We determine the spin and charge orders in the ground state of the doped two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model in its simplest form, namely with only nearest-neighbor hopping and on-site repulsion. At half-filling, the ground state is known to be an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. Doping Mott insulators is believed to be relevant to the superconductivity observed in cuprates. A variety of candidates have been proposed for the ground state of the doped 2D Hubbard model. A recent work employing a combination of several state-of-the-art numerical many-body methods established the stripe order as the ground state near $1/8$ doping at strong interactions. In this paper, we apply one of these methods, the cutting-edge constrained-path auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) method with self-consistently optimized gauge constraints, to systematically study the model as a function of doping and interaction strength. With careful finite size scaling based on large-scale computations, we map out the ground state phase diagram in terms of its spin and charge order. We find that modulated antiferromagnetic order persists from near half-filling to about $1/5$ doping. At lower interaction strengths or larger doping, these ordered states are best described as spin-density waves, with essentially delocalized holes and modest oscillations in charge correlations. When the charge correlations are stronger (large interaction or small doping), they are best described as stripe states, with the holes more localized near the node in the antiferromagnetic spin order. In both cases, we find that the wavelength in the charge correlations is consistent with so-called filled stripes.

Supersolidity from defect condensation in the extended boson Hubbard model

Yi‐Chun Chen, Roger G. Melko, Stefan Weßel +1 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the hard-core extended boson Hubbard model on the square lattice with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hoppings and repulsions, using Gutzwiller mean-field theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We observe the formation of supersolid states with checkerboard, striped, and quarter-filled crystal structures when the system is doped away from commensurate fillings. In the striped supersolid phase, a strong anisotropy in the superfluid density is obtained from the simulations; however, the transverse component remains finite, indicating a true two-dimensional superflow. We find that upon doping, the striped supersolid transitions directly into the supersolid with quarter-filled crystal structure, via a first-order stripe melting transition.

Magnetic supersolid phases of two-dimensional extended Bose–Hubbard model with spin–orbit coupling

Dong-Dong Pu, Ji-Guo wang, Ya-Fei Song +1 more

Abstract We investigate the quantum phases and phase transitions for spin–orbit coupled two-species bosons with nearest-neighbor (NN) interaction in a two-dimensional square lattice using inhomogeneous dynamical Guztwiller mean-field method. Under the effect of spin–orbit coupling and NN interaction, we uncover a rich variety of different magnetic supersolid (SS) phases. In the presence of intraspecies NN interaction, the phase diagram exhibits the phase-twisted double-checkerboard SS (PT-DCSS) and phase-striped double-checkerboard SS (PS-DCSS) phases. For both intra- and interspecies NN interactions, apart from the phase-twisted lattice SS (PT-LSS) and phase-striped lattice SS (PS-LSS) phases, some nontrivial SS phases with interesting properties occur. More importantly, we find that the emergences of these nontrivial SS phases are dependent of the interspecies on-site interaction. To further characterize the SS phases, we also discuss the spin-dependent momentum distributions and magnetic textures. The magnetic textures, such as antiferromagnetic, spiral and stripe orders are shown. Finally, we give the fully analytical insights into the numerical results.
