Integrals of motion in 3D Bohmian trajectories

Abstract

Abstract Chaos in Bohmian quantum mechanics is an open field of research. In general, most of the 3D Bohmian trajectories are free to wander around the 3D space. However, there are cases where the evolution of the trajectories is dictated by exact or approximate integrals of motion. A first case corresponds to partial integrability, where the trajectories (ordered and chaotic) evolve on certain integral surfaces. A second case corresponds to ordered trajectories. In this paper we extend our previous work in 3D Bohmian chaos by using both forms of integrability and discuss their physical implications.

Partial integrability of 3d Bohmian trajectories

G. Contopoulos, Athanasios C. Tzemos, Christos Efthymiopoulos

Abstract In this paper we study the integrability of 3d Bohmian trajectories of a system of quantum harmonic oscillators. We show that the initial choice of quantum numbers is responsible for the existence (or not) of an integral of motion which confines the trajectories on certain invariant surfaces. We give a few examples of orbits in cases where there is or there is not an integral and make some comments on the impact of partial integrability in Bohmian Mechanics. Finally, we make a connection between our present results for the integrability in the 3d case and analogous results found in the 2d and 4d cases.

Chaos and ergodicity in a partially integrable 3d Bohmian system: a comparison with 2d systems

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

Abstract In the present paper we study the Bohmian dynamics of a partially integrable 3d Bohmian system whose trajectories evolve on spherical surfaces. By use of spherical coordinates (R, ϕ, θ) we study the behaviour of unstable fixed points that generate chaos on the (ϕ, θ) plane and discuss the differences between them and those of planar 2d systems. Finally, we show for the first time that the chaotic trajectories of this system are ergodic although the number of its nodes is very small (two). Thus we can observe ergodicity not only in multinodal 2d systems but also in partially integrable systems with few nodes due to their curved geometry.

Chaos in Bohmian Quantum Mechanics: A Short Review

George Contopoulos, Athanasios C. Tzemos

This is a short review of the theory of chaos in Bohmian quantum mechanics based on our series of works in this field. Our first result is the development of a generic theoretical mechanism responsible for the generation of chaos in an arbitrary Bohmian system (in 2 and 3 dimensions). This mechanism allows us to explore the effect of chaos on Bohmian trajectories and study in detail (both analytically and numerically) the different kinds of Bohmian trajectories where, in general, chaos and order coexist. Finally, we explore the effect of quantum entanglement on the evolution of the Bohmian trajectories and study chaos and ergodicity in qubit systems which are of great theoretical and practical interest. We find that the chaotic trajectories are also ergodic, i. e., they give the same final distribution of their points after a long time regardless of their initial conditions. In the case of strong entanglement most trajectories are chaotic and ergodic and an arbitrary initial distribution of particles will tend to Born’s rule over the course of time. On the other hand, in the case of weak entanglement the distribution of Born’s rule is dominated by ordered trajectories and consequently an arbitrary initial configuration of particles will not tend, in general, to Born’s rule unless it is initially satisfied. Our results shed light on a fundamental problem in Bohmian mechanics, namely, whether there is a dynamical approximation of Born’s rule by an arbitrary initial distribution of Bohmian particles.

Critical points and trajectories of the Bohmian quantum flow

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

In the present work we study the critical points of the Bohmian quantum flow, namely the nodal point and its associated X-point, which are responsible for the generation of chaos in Bohmian trajectories. In the first part of the paper we find an analytical equation for the position of the X-point in a planar 2-d Bohmian system with a single nodal point and test its accuracy numerically. We then calculate its asymptotic curves and comment on the way they affect the evolution of the nearby Bohmian trajectories. In the second part we present our first results on the position of the X-point and its asymptotic curves in a 3d partially integrable system, where the Bohmian trajectories evolve on spherical surfaces.

Chaos in bohmian mechanics of commensurate harmonic oscillators

H. Umair, Z. Hishamuddin

Bohmian mechanics is a causal interpretation of quantum mechanics in which there are well-defined particle trajectories guided by the wave function. Within this framework, it is shown that certain classical integrable systems can exhibit both periodic and chaotic behaviours. In this paper, we extend the work of Borondo et al. by investigating the behaviours of commensurate two-dimensional harmonic oscillator systems with different ratios of frequencies. We show that the system may produce chaotic behavior of Bohmian trajectories to be dependenton frequencies ratio. This result is illustrated numerically in computer experiments displaying the Bohmian trajectories.

Order, Chaos and Born’s Distribution of Bohmian Particles

Athanasios C. Tzemos, G. Contopoulos

We study order, chaos and ergodicity in the Bohmian trajectories of a 2D quantum harmonic oscillator. We first present all the possible types (chaotic, ordered) of Bohmian trajectories in wavefunctions made of superpositions of two and three energy eigenstates of the oscillator. There is no chaos in the case of two terms and in some cases of three terms. Then, we show the different geometries of nodal points in bipartite Bohmian systems of entangled qubits. Finally, we study multinodal wavefunctions and find that a large number of nodal points does not always imply the dominance of chaos. We show that, in some cases, the Born distribution is dominated by ordered trajectories, something that has a significant impact on the accessibility of Born’s rule P=|Ψ|2 by initial distributions of Bohmian particles with P0≠|Ψ0|2.
