Abstract

Abstract We consider the interaction of atomic hydrogen, in its ground state, with an electromagnetic pulse whose duration is fixed in terms of the number of optical cycles. We study the probability of excitation of the atom in the static field limit i.e. for field frequencies going to zero. Despite the fact that the well-known Born–Fock adiabatic theorem is valid only for a system whose energy spectrum is discrete, we show that it is still possible to use this theorem to derive, in the low frequency limit, an analytical formula which gives the probability of transition to any excited state of the atom as a function of the field intensity, the carrier envelope phase and the number of optical cycles within the pulse. The results for the probability of excitation to low-lying excited states, obtained with this formula, agree with those we get by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. The domain of validity is discussed in detail.

Two-photon Excitation of Hydrogen Atom by Sub-Femtoseconds Electromagnetic Pulses

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, S. V. Sakhno

The development of methods of generation of ultrashort pulses (USP) of femto- and attosecond duration ranges with controlled parameters necessitates the theoretical study of features of their interaction with a matter. Among such features that do not exist in case of “long” pulses should first of all be the nonlinear dependence of the photoprocess probability W on the USP duration as well as the dependence on the carrier phase with respect to the pulse envelope. It should be noted that if the dependence of the probability W on the phase manifests itself either only for very short pulses, when ωt 1 too for fields of moderate strength, when the perturbation theory is applicable. The present work is dedicated to the theoretical analysis of two-photon excitation of hydrogen atom in a discrete energy spectrum by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses of femto- and subfemtosecond ranges of durations. As examples, excitation of hydrogen atom from the ground state to excited states with a zero orbital moment is considered.

Nonperturbative theory of the resonant interaction of atoms with laser fields

Albert M. F. Lau

A nonperturbative analysis is given for an $n$-level atom or molecule dressed by a Stark field and in single-photon or multiphoton (near) resonant interaction with coherent optical field modes, which may be intense. All the field amplitudes and phases may have nonadiabatic time variation. New formulas for probability amplitudes of states with finite lifetimes are given for atom-field levels swept or optical Stark shifted through resonance or into close approach. One of these includes the Landau-Zener formula as a special case. Power broadening is contained in these formulas. They are useful for both weak- and strong-field interaction. Further, it is shown that many familiar single-photon coherent transient phenomena have their analogs in the intense-field and the multiphoton domains. Two new effects, pulse-shape dependence in final transition probability and population inversion due to the nonadiabatic passage of an asymmetric pulse, are demonstrated with numerical results for the process $\mathrm{Na}(3s)+2\ensuremath{\hbar}\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{Na}(5s)$. Finally, double resonance (single-photon and/or multiphoton) is analyzed, with discussion of adiabatic following and a derivation of a formula for level crossing. Generalization of an earlier procedure for solving the adiabatic eigenvalue problem of the whole atom-field system is given.

Laser-induced resonant transitions with Gaussian switching conditions

Predrag Krstić, R K Janve, D. Fussen

A simple closed-form formula is obtained for the transition probability of a two-state atom in a Gaussian laser pulse. The validity of the formula is tested by comparison with numerical results. The analytic formula is applicable over a wide range of the laser intensities, detunings and pulse durations. Particularly, it can be used for calculation of excitation probability when the Rabi frequency is of the order of or larger than a frequency associated with the pulse duration.

Two-photon excitation of atoms by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses in a discrete spectrum

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, S. V. Sakhno

The paper is devoted to the theoretical investigation of two-photon excitation of atom in a discrete energy spectrum by ultrashort electromagnetic pulses of femto- and subfemtosecond ranges of durations. An analytical expression for the total probability of the process is derived. Numerical simulations are made for hydrogen and sodium atoms. It is shown that the total probability of the process is nonlinear function of pulse duration and character of this function depends strongly on the frequency detuning of pulse carrier frequency from two-photon resonance.

Analytic formulae for occupation probabilities of atomic states in strong short laser pulses

Darko Dimitrovski, Jendrik Poloczek, J S Briggs

Explicit analytic expressions, involving elementary functions, are given for occupation probabilities of atomic states after one or a few cycles of a strong short laser pulse. These formulae are strictly valid in the asymptotic limit of large momentum transfer from the field to the atom during a half cycle of the pulse. The cases of a hydrogenic atom, of a negative ion and of multielectron atoms in the independent-electron approximation are considered. The asymptotic expressions, derived in the limit of infinite momentum transfer from the field, have also the correct limit for vanishingly small momentum transfers, so that fortuitously they are valid for arbitrary momentum transfer.

Non-linear optical mixing of frequencies of a strong bichromatic field interacting with a two-level atom at high proton densities

Constantine Mavroyannis

We have studied the excitation spectrum arising from the interaction of a two-level atom with two strong electromagnetic fields whose initially populated modes ω a and ω b are near resonance with the atomic transition frequency In the limit of high photon densities the Green's function of the system describing the electronic transition in question has been derived in a closed form and includes processes arising from the interaction of seven photon modes of both laser fields. The spectral function of the system is calculated when the frequency ω a of the one laser field is in resonance with the atomic transition frequency while the frequency ω b of the other field is varied. The excitation spectrum is found to consist, apart from the central peak at the excitation frequency ω a , of several lorentzian lines which are peaked in the neighbourhood of the frequencies ω a ± Δ, ω a ± 2Δ, ω a ± 3Δ and ω a ± 4Δ, where Δ = ω a - ω b and describe the type of optical mixing of light modes which is of the third, fifth, seventh and ninth order, respectively. Additional peaks appear in the spectra, which result from the interaction between the frequency modes in question. The probability amplitudes describing the relative intensities of the peaks in question are expressed as functions of the parameters η a = Ω a /Δ and η b = Ω b /Δ, where Ω a and Ω b are the Rabi Frequencies of the two laser fields, respectively. It is found that when η a ⩾ 1 and η b ⩾ 1 the expression for the relative intensities of the bands in question are remarkably enhanced and take extremely large positive or negative values. Results of numerical calculations for a wide range of values of η a and η b when η a = η b ⩾ 1 are presented graphically and the complete excitation spectrum is discussed in detail. The method may be useful to investigate the behaviour of excited states as well as those close to the limit of ionization.
