Abstract

Quantum impurity models are the prototypical examples of quantum many-body dynamics which manifests in their spectral and transport properties. Single channel Anderson(and Kondo model) leads to the Fermi liquid ground state in the strong coupling regime which corresponds to a stable infrared fixed point at which the quantum impurity gets completely screened by the conduction electrons. Quantum impurity models with non-trivial density of states exhibit quantum phase transition and this quantum criticality lies in the universality class of local quantum critical systems. In this paper, we report first study of the flow equation renormalization of gapped Kondo model which has gapped density of states, the gap being at the Fermi level. Flow equation renormalization group method has proved to be one of the very robust renormalization methods to study Kondo physics both in equilibrium as well as in non-equilibrium. Here we have shown that this method can also be employed to study local quantum criticality. We have calculated the flow equations for the Kondo coupling and solved them for various values of the gap parameter and we find that there is suppression of Kondo divergence as gap is increased which signifies that as gap is increased, renormalization flow goes away from the strong coupling fixed point. We have also calculated the spin susceptibility and we find that as gap is increased, susceptibility goes over to the Curie behaviour and hence confirming the renormalization flow towards the local moment fixed point.

Quantum phase transition in a gapped Anderson model: A numerical renormalization group study

Cătălin Paşcu Moca, Adrian Roman

We use the numerical renormalization group method to investigate the spectral properties of a single-impurity Anderson model with a gap $\ensuremath{\delta}$ across the Fermi level in the conduction-electron spectrum. For any finite $\ensuremath{\delta}>0$, at half filling the ground state of the system is always a doublet. Away from half filling a quantum phase transition (QPT) occurs as function of the gap value $\ensuremath{\delta}$, and the system evolves from the strong-coupling (SC) Kondo-type state, corresponding to $\ensuremath{\delta}<{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{C}$ toward a localized moment (LM) regime for $\ensuremath{\delta}>{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{C}$. The opening of the gap leads to the formation of one (two) bound states when the system is in the SC (LM) regime. The evolution across the QPT of their positions and the corresponding weights together with the dynamic properties of the model are investigated.

Unveiling the Kondo cloud: unitary RG study of the Kondo model

Anirban Mukherjee, Abhirup Mukherjee, N. S. Vidhyadhiraja +2 more

We analyze the single-channel Kondo model using the recently developed unitary renormalization group (URG) method, and obtain a comprehensive understanding of the Kondo screening cloud. The fixed-point low-energy Hamiltonian enables the computation of a plethora of thermodynamic quantities (specific heat, susceptibility, Wilson ratio, etc.) as well as spectral functions, all of which are found to be in excellent agreement with known results. By integrating out the impurity, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian for the excitations of the electrons comprising the Kondo cloud. This is found to contain both k-space number-diagonal (Fermi liquid) as well off-diagonal four-fermion scattering terms. Our conclusions are reinforced by a URG study of the two-particle entanglement and many-body correlations among members of the Kondo cloud and impurity. The entanglement between the impurity and a cloud electron, as well as between any two cloud electrons, is found to increase under flow towards the singlet ground state at the strong-coupling fixed point. Both the number-diagonal and off-diagonal correlations within the conduction cloud are also found to increase as the impurity is screened under the flow, and the latter are found to be responsible for the macroscopic entanglement of the Kondo-singlet ground state. The unitary RG flow enables an analytic computation of the phase shifts suffered by the conduction electrons at the strong-coupling fixed point. This reveals an orthogonality catastrophe between the local moment and strong-coupling ground states, and is related to a change in the Luttinger volume of the conduction bath. Our results offer fresh insight on the nature of the emergent many-particle entanglement within the Kondo cloud, and pave the way for further investigations in more exotic contexts such as the fixed point of the over-screened multi-channel Kondo problem.

Quantum criticality in the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo models: Interplay between fermion- and boson-induced Kondo destruction

J. H. Pixley, Stefan Kirchner, Kevin Ingersent +1 more

We address the phenomenon of critical Kondo destruction in pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson and Kondo quantum impurity models. These models describe a localized level coupled both to a fermionic bath having a density of states that vanishes like ${|\ensuremath{\epsilon}|}^{r}$ at the Fermi energy ($\ensuremath{\epsilon}=0$) and, via one component of the impurity spin, to a bosonic bath having a sub-Ohmic spectral density proportional to ${|\ensuremath{\omega}|}^{s}$. Each bath is capable by itself of suppressing the Kondo effect at a continuous quantum phase transition. We study the interplay between these two mechanisms for Kondo destruction using continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo for the pseudogap Bose-Fermi Anderson model with $0<r<\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\le}s<1$, and applying the numerical renormalization group to the corresponding Kondo model. At particle-hole symmetry, the models exhibit a quantum-critical point between a Kondo (fermionic strong-coupling) phase and a localized (Kondo-destroyed) phase. The two solution methods, which are in good agreement in their domain of overlap, provide access to the many-body spectrum, as well as to correlation functions including, in particular, the single-particle Green's function and the static and dynamical local spin susceptibilities. The quantum-critical regime exhibits the hyperscaling of critical exponents and $\ensuremath{\omega}/T$ scaling in the dynamics that characterize an interacting critical point. The $(r,s)$ plane can be divided into three regions: one each in which the calculated critical properties are dominated by the bosonic bath alone or by the fermionic bath alone, and between these two regions, a third in which the bosonic bath governs the critical spin response but both baths influence the renormalization-group flow near the quantum-critical point.

Real-space renormalization group flow in quantum impurity systems: Local moment formation and the Kondo screening cloud

Andrew K. Mitchell, Michael Becker, R. Bulla

The existence of a length scale ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{K}\ensuremath{\sim}1/{T}_{K}$ (with ${T}_{K}$ the Kondo temperature) has long been predicted in quantum impurity systems. At low temperatures $T\ensuremath{\ll}{T}_{K}$, the standard interpretation is that a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity is screened by a surrounding ``Kondo cloud'' of spatial extent ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{K}$. We argue that renormalization group (RG) flow between any two fixed points (FPs) results in a characteristic length scale, observed in real space as a crossover between physical behavior typical of each FP. In the simplest example of the Anderson impurity model, three FPs arise, and we show that ``free orbital,'' ``local moment,'' and ``strong coupling'' regions of space can be identified at zero temperature. These regions are separated by two crossover length scales ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\text{LM}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{K}$, with the latter diverging as the Kondo effect is destroyed on increasing temperature through ${T}_{K}$. One implication is that moment formation occurs inside the ``Kondo cloud'', while the screening process itself occurs on flowing to the strong coupling FP at distances $\ensuremath{\sim}{\ensuremath{\xi}}_{K}$. Generic aspects of the real-space physics are exemplified by the two-channel Kondo model, where ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{K}$ now separates local moment and overscreening clouds.

Renormalization Group Methods for Quantum Many-body Hamiltonians

Rukhsan Ul Haq

Renormalization group methods become natural for quantum many-body systems where there is an emergence of new energy scales like as Kondo scale in case of Kondo model. It was the Numerical Renormalization Group which gave the full quantitative understanding of the strong coupling fixed point of Kondo model and also of Anderson Impurity model. However, it was Andersons poor man scaling method which gave the analytical insights into the scaling behaviour of quantum impurity models. That makes poor man scaling method very important, and hence it has been used extensively in carrying out renormalization studies of quantum impurity models. This method has been generalized and also applied to other quantum many-body Hamiltonians. In this paper, we give a detailed presentation of poor man scaling method and apply it to study the scaling behaviour of Kondo model and Anderson impurity model as well. Though there are many reviews of perturbative renormalization of Kondo model, in this paper we have also presented a detailed discussion about scaling analysis of Anderson impurity model. We also present another method called flow equation method which is a generalization of poor man scaling method and has recently been applied to study the quantum many-body dynamics both in equilibrium and out-of equilibrium. We also present a numerical procedure to extract Kondo scale from flow equations of Kondo model. The importance of this procedure is that it can be applied to calculate the Kondo scale for situations where poor mans scaling method can not be applied.
