Quantum Quench dynamics in Non-local Luttinger Model: Rigorous Results

Abstract

We investigate, in the Luttinger model with fixed box potential, the time evolution of an inhomogeneous state prepared as a localized fermion added to the noninteracting ground state. We proved that, if the state is evolved with the interacting Hamiltonian, the averaged density has two peaks moving in opposite directions, with a constant but renormalized velocity. We also proved that a dynamical `Landau quasi-particle weight' appears in the oscillating part of the averaged density, asymptotically vanishing with large time. The results are proved with the Mattis-Lieb diagonalization method. A simpler proof with the exact Bosonization formulas is also provided.

Quantum quench for inhomogeneous states in the nonlocal Luttinger model

Vieri Mastropietro, Zhituo Wang

In the Luttinger model with nonlocal interaction we investigate, by exact analytical methods, the time evolution of an inhomogeneous state with a localized fermion added to the noninteracting ground state. In the absence of interaction the averaged density has two peaks moving in opposite directions with constant velocities. If the state is evolved with the interacting Hamiltonian, two main effects appear. The first is that the peaks have velocities which are not constant but vary between a minimal and maximal value. The second is that a dynamical ``Landau quasiparticle weight'' appears in the oscillating part of the averaged density, asymptotically vanishing with time, as a consequence of the fact that fermions are not excitations of the interacting Hamiltonian.

Quantum quench spectroscopy of a Luttinger liquid: Ultrarelativistic density wave dynamics due to fractionalization in an XXZ chain

Matthew S. Foster, Timothy C. Berkelbach, David R. Reichman +1 more

We compute the dynamics of localized excitations produced by a quantum quench in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. Using numerics combining the density-matrix renormalization group and exact time evolution, as well as analytical arguments, we show that fractionalization due to interactions in the prequench state gives rise to ``ultrarelativistic'' density waves that travel at the maximum band velocity. The system is initially prepared in the ground state of the chain within the gapless $XY$ phase, which admits a Luttinger liquid (LL) description at low energies and long wavelengths. The Hamiltonian is then suddenly quenched to a band insulator, after which the chain evolves unitarily. Through the gapped dispersion of the insulator spectrum, the postquench dynamics serve as a ``velocity microscope,'' revealing initial-state particle correlations via space-time density propagation. We show that the ultrarelativistic wave production is tied to the particular way in which fractionalization evades Pauli blocking in the zero-temperature initial LL state.

Out-of-equilibrium density dynamics of a quenched fermionic system

S. Porta, Filippo Maria Gambetta, Fabio Cavaliere +2 more

Using a Luttinger liquid theory we investigate the time evolution of the particle density of a one-dimensional fermionic system with open boundaries and subject to a finite duration quench of the interparticle interaction. We provide analytical and asymptotic solutions to the unitary time evolution of the system, showing that both switching on and switching off the quench ramp create light-cone perturbations in the density. The post-quench dynamics is strongly affected by the interference between these two perturbations. In particular, we find that the discrepancy between the time-dependent density and the one obtained by a generalized Gibbs ensemble picture vanishes with an oscillatory behavior as a function of the quench duration, with local minima corresponding to a perfect overlap of the two light-cone perturbations. For adiabatic quenches, we also obtain a similar behavior in the approach of the generalized Gibbs ensemble density towards the one associated with the ground state of the final Hamiltonian.

Quantum quench dynamics in the Luttinger liquid phase of the Hatano-Nelson model

Balázs Dóra, Miklós Antal Werner, Cătălin Paşcu Moca

We investigate the quantum quench dynamics of the interacting Hatano-Nelson model with open boundary conditions using both Abelian bosonization and numerical methods. Specifically, we follow the evolution of the particle density and current profile in real space over time by turning the imaginary vector potential on or off in the presence of weak interactions. Our results reveal spatiotemporal Friedel oscillations in the system with light cones propagating ballistically from the open ends, accompanied by local currents of equal magnitude for both switch-off and -on protocols. Remarkably, the bosonization method accurately accounts for the density and current patterns with a single overall fitting parameter. The continuity equation is satisfied by the long-wavelength part of the density and current, despite the nonunitary time evolution when the Hatano-Nelson term is switched on.

General interaction quenches in a Luttinger liquid

You-Ming Wei, Hantao Lu

Abstract We discuss a general interaction quench in a Luttinger liquid described by a paired bosonic Hamiltonian. By employing su(1, 1) Lie algebra, the post-quench time-evolved wavefunctions are obtained analytically, from which the time evolution of the entanglement in momentum space can be investigated. We note that depending on the choice of Bogoliubov quasiparticles, the expressions of wavefunctions, which describe time-evolved paired states, can take different forms. The correspondence between the largest entanglement eigenvalue in momentum space and the wavefunction overlap in quench dynamics is discussed, which generalizes the results of Dóra et al (2016, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 010 603). A numerical demonstration on an XXZ lattice model is presented via the exact diagonalization method.

Universal quench dynamics of interacting quantum impurity systems

Dante Marvin Kennes, V. Meden, Romain Vasseur

The equilibrium physics of quantum impurities frequently involves a universal crossover from weak to strong reservoir-impurity coupling, characterized by single-parameter scaling and an energy scale ${T}_{K}$ (Kondo temperature) that breaks scale invariance. For the noninteracting resonant level model, the nonequilibrium time evolution of the Loschmidt echo after a local quantum quench was recently computed explicitly [R. Vasseur, K. Trinh, S. Haas, and H. Saleur, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 240601 (2013)]. It shows single-parameter scaling with variable ${T}_{K}t$. Here, we scrutinize whether similar universal dynamics can be observed in various interacting quantum impurity systems. Using density matrix and functional renormalization group approaches, we analyze the time evolution resulting from abruptly coupling two noninteracting Fermi or interacting Luttinger liquid leads via a quantum dot or a direct link. We also consider the case of a single Luttinger liquid lead suddenly coupled to a quantum dot. We investigate whether the field-theory predictions for the universal scaling as well as for the large-time behavior successfully describe the time evolution of the Loschmidt echo and the entanglement entropy of microscopic models. Our study shows that for the considered local quench protocols the above quantum impurity models fall into a class of problems for which the nonequilibrium dynamics can largely be understood based on the knowledge of the corresponding equilibrium physics.
