Abstract

We consider a system of N bosons interacting through a singular two-body potential scaling with N and having the form N^{3\beta −1}V(N^{\beta }x) , for an arbitrary parameter \beta \in (0,1) . We provide a norm-approximation for the many-body evolution of initial data exhibiting Bose–Einstein condensation in terms of a cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the condensate wave function and of a unitary Fock space evolution with a generator quadratic in creation and annihilation operators for the fluctuations.

Central limit theorem for Bose gases interacting through singular potentials

Simone Rademacher

Abstract We consider a system ofNbosons in the limit $$N \rightarrow \infty $$ N→∞ , interacting through singular potentials. For initial data exhibiting Bose–Einstein condensation, the many-body time evolution is well approximated through a quadratic fluctuation dynamics around a cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation of the condensate wave function. We show that these fluctuations satisfy a (multi-variate) central limit theorem.

Quantum fluctuations of many-body dynamics around the Gross–Pitaevskii equation

Cristina Caraci, Jakob Oldenburg, Benjamin Schlein

We consider the evolution of a gas of N bosons in the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii regime (in which particles are initially trapped in a volume of order one and interact through a repulsive potential with scattering length of order 1/N ). We construct a quasi-free approximation of the many-body dynamics, whose distance to the solution of the Schrödinger equation converges to zero, as N \to \infty , in the L^{2} (\mathbb{R}^{3N}) -norm. To achieve this goal, we let the Bose–Einstein condensate evolve according to a time-dependent Gross–Pitaevskii equation. After factoring out the microscopic correlation structure, the evolution of the orthogonal excitations of the condensate is governed instead by a Bogoliubov dynamics, with a time-dependent generator quadratic in creation and annihilation operators. As an application, we show a central limit theorem for fluctuations of bounded observables around their expectation with respect to the Gross–Pitaevskii dynamics.

Derivation of the 1d nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the 3d quantum many-body dynamics of strongly confined bosons

Lea Boßmann

We consider the dynamics of N interacting bosons initially exhibiting Bose–Einstein condensation. Due to an external trapping potential, the bosons are strongly confined in two spatial directions, with the transverse extension of the trap being of order ε. The non-negative interaction potential is scaled such that its scattering length is positive and of order (N/ε2)−1 and the range of the interaction scales as (N/ε2)−β for β ∈ (0, 1). We prove that in the simultaneous limit N → ∞ and ε → 0, the condensation is preserved by the dynamics and the time evolution is asymptotically described by a cubic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in one dimension, where the strength of the nonlinearity depends on the interaction and on the confining potential. This is the first derivation of a lower-dimensional effective evolution equation for singular potentials scaling with β≥12 and lays the foundations for the derivation of the physically relevant one-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation (β = 1). For our analysis, we adapt an approach by Pickl to the problem with strong confinement.

Quantitative erivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Niels Benedikter, Gustavo de Oliveira, Benjamin Schlein

Starting from first-principle many-body quantum dynamics, we show that the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates can be approximated by the time-dependent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation, giving a bound on the rate of the convergence. Initial data are constructed on the bosonic Fock space applying an appropriate Bogoliubov transformation on a coherent state with expected number of particles $\mathit{N}$. The Bogoliubov transformation plays a crucial role; it produces the correct microscopic correlations among the particles. Our analysis shows that, on the level of the one-particle reduced density, the form of the initial data is preserved by the many-body evolution, up to a small error that vanishes as $\mathit{N}^{-1/2}$ in the limit of large $\mathit{N}$.

Dynamical and spectral properties of bose gases with singular interactions

Chiara Boccato

Bose-Einstein condensates have been experimentally realized in cold Bose gases for the first time in 1995.This discovery has renewed interest in the theory of interacting Bose gases; however, the mathematical understanding of Bose-Einstein condensation is still incomplete. In this thesis we derive effective theories for the dynamical and spectral properties of Bose gases. Our theoretical description is based on scaling regimes where the number of particles N becomes large and the two-body interaction potential scales as N 3β-1 V (N β •), for a fixed β ∈ (0, 1].The case β = 1 is known as Gross-Pitaevskii regime. Our first result concerns the time evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates after the trapping potential is removed. In previous works, it was shown that the many-body dynamics can be approximated by a one-body nonlinear Schrödinger equation at the level of reduced density matrices. We provide a more precise approximation of the time evolution: in a second-quantized setting, we construct a unitary effective dynamics, which, in the limit of large N , approximates the fully evolved state in Fock space norm. Our result comes with an explicit bound on the rate of convergence. It is valid for β < 1.Our second result addresses the properties of the ground state wave function. It has been shown before that the ground state wave function exhibits condensation in the limit N → ∞, i.e. the one-particle density matrix associated to the ground state approaches a projection. We prove the optimal bound for the convergence rate, for a translation invariant system. To do this, we estimate uniformly in N the number of excited particles. This result is valid for β = 1.Our last result concerns the ground state energy and the excitation spectrum of the translation invariant system. We prove the validity of Bogoliubov theory; this allows us to compute the ground state energy and the low-lying excitation spectrum up to an error that vanishes for large N .This result holds for β < 1.This thesis is based on the articles [11], [9] and [10].i

Higher Order Corrections to the Mean-Field Description of the Dynamics of Interacting Bosons

Lea Boßmann, Nataša Pavlović, Peter Pickl +1 more

Abstract In this paper, we introduce a novel method for deriving higher order corrections to the mean-field description of the dynamics of interacting bosons. More precisely, we consider the dynamics of N $$d$$ d -dimensional bosons for large N. The bosons initially form a Bose–Einstein condensate and interact with each other via a pair potential of the form $$(N-1)^{-1}N^{d\beta }v(N^\beta \cdot )$$ (N-1)-1Ndβv(Nβ·) for $$\beta \in [0,\frac{1}{4d})$$ β∈[0,14d) . We derive a sequence of N-body functions which approximate the true many-body dynamics in $$L^2({\mathbb {R}}^{dN})$$ L2(RdN) -norm to arbitrary precision in powers of $$N^{-1}$$ N-1 . The approximating functions are constructed as Duhamel expansions of finite order in terms of the first quantised analogue of a Bogoliubov time evolution.
