Abstract

A first-order type phase transition between Mott lobes has been reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 135302 (2012) for a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model in the presence of an attractive three-body interaction. We revisit the scenario in systems of ultracold bosons both in one- and two-dimensional lattices using the density matrix renormalization group method and the self-consistent cluster mean-field theory approach, respectively. We show that an unconventional pairing of particles occurs due to the competing repulsive two-body and attractive three-body interactions. This leads to a pair superfluid phase sandwiched between the Mott insulator lobes corresponding to densities density one and three in the strongly interacting regime. This is in contrast to the direct first-order jump as predicted before. Interestingly, the Mott to pair superfluid phase transitions are found to be continuous in nature. We also show that the pair superfluid phase is robust with respect to the ratio between the two- and three-body interaction strengths. In the end, we establish a connection between the Bose-Hubbard model presented in Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 135302 (2012) with a more general Bose-Hubbard model and analyze the fate of the pair superfluid phase in the presence of an external trapping potential.

Two-body repulsive bound pairs in a multibody interacting Bose-Hubbard model

Suman Mondal, Augustine Kshetrimayum, Tapan Mishra

We study the system of multibody interacting bosons on a two-dimensional optical lattice and analyze the formation of bound bosonic pairs in the context of the Bose-Hubbard model. Assuming a repulsive two-body interaction we obtain the signatures of pair formation in the regions between the Mott insulator lobes of the phase diagram for different choices of higher-order local interactions. Considering the most general Bose-Hubbard model involving local multibody interactions we investigate the ground state properties utilizing the cluster mean-field theory approach and further confirm the results by means of sophisticated infinite projected entangled pair states calculations. By using various order parameters, we show that the choice of higher-order interaction can lead to pair superfluid phase in the system between two different Mott lobes. We also analyze the effect of temperature and density-dependent tunneling to establish the stability of the PSF phase.

Three-body on-site interactions in ultracold bosonic atoms in optical lattices and superlattices

Manpreet Singh, Arya Dhar, Tapan Mishra +2 more

The Mott-insulator--superfluid transition for ultracold bosonic atoms in an optical lattice has been extensively studied in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model with two-body on-site interactions. In this paper, we analyze the additional effect of the three-body on-site interactions on this phase transition in an optical lattice and the transitions between the various phases that arise in an optical superlattice. Using the mean-field theory and the density matrix renormalization group method, we find the phase diagrams depicting the relationships between various physical quantities in an optical lattice and superlattice. We also propose a possible experimental signature to observe the on-site three-body interactions.

Quantum phases of constrained dipolar bosons in coupled one-dimensional optical lattices

Manpreet Singh, Suman Mondal, B. K. Sahoo +1 more

We investigate a system of two- and three-body constrained dipolar bosons in a pair of one-dimensional optical lattices coupled to each other by nonlocal dipole-dipole interactions. Assuming attractive dipole-dipole interactions, we obtain the ground-state phase diagram of the system by employing the cluster mean-field theory. The competition between the repulsive on-site and attractive nearest-neighbor interactions between the chains yields three kinds of superfluids, namely, the trimer superfluid, the pair superfluid, and the usual single-particle superfluid along with the insulating Mott phase at the commensurate density. Additionally, we realize the simultaneous existence of Mott insulator and superfluid phases for the two- and three-body constrained bosons, respectively. We also analyze the stability of these quantum phases in the presence of a harmonic trap potential.

Mott-Hubbard transition of bosons in optical lattices with three-body interactions

Bo-Lun Chen, Xiaobin Huang, Su-Peng Kou +1 more

In this paper, the quantum phase transition between the superfluid state and the Mott-insulator state is studied based on an extended Bose-Hubbard model with two- and three-body on-site interactions. By employing the mean-field approximation we find the extension of the insulating ``lobes'' and the existence of a fixed point in three-dimensional phase space. We investigate the link between experimental parameters and theoretical variables. The possibility to observe our results through some experimental effects in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates is also discussed.

Strong-coupling expansion for the two-species Bose-Hubbard model

M. Iskin

To analyze the ground-state phase diagram of Bose-Bose mixtures loaded into $d$-dimensional hypercubic optical lattices, we perform a strong-coupling power-series expansion in the kinetic energy term (plus a scaling analysis) for the two-species Bose-Hubbard model with onsite boson-boson interactions. We consider both repulsive and attractive interspecies interaction, and obtain an analytical expression for the phase boundary between the incompressible Mott insulator and the compressible superfluid phase up to third order in the hoppings. In particular, we find a re-entrant quantum phase transition from paired superfluid (superfluidity of composite bosons, i.e., Bose-Bose pairs) to Mott insulator and again to a paired superfluid in all one, two, and three dimensions, when the interspecies interaction is sufficiently large and attractive. We hope that some of our results could be tested with ultracold atomic systems.

Phase transitions of the coherently coupled two-component Bose gas in a square optical lattice

Ulrike Bornheimer, Ivana Vasić, Walter Hofstetter

We investigate properties of an ultracold, two-component bosonic gas in a square optical lattice at unit filling. In addition to density-density interactions, the atoms are subject to coherent light-matter interactions that couple different internal states. We examine the influence of this coherent coupling on the system and its quantum phases by using Gutzwiller mean-field theory as well as bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the interplay of strong interspecies repulsion and coherent coupling affects the Mott insulator to superfluid transition and shifts the tip of the Mott lobe toward higher values of the tunneling amplitude. In the strongly interacting Mott regime, the resulting Bose-Hubbard model can be mapped onto an effective spin Hamiltonian that offers additional insights into the observed phenomena.
