Abstract

We study superconducting properties of population-imbalanced ultracold Fermi mixtures in the honeycomb lattice that can be effectively described by the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field. We use the mean-field theory approach to obtain ground-state phase diagrams including the unconventional Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, which is characterized by atypical behavior of the Cooper-pair total momentum. We show that the momentum changes its value as well as direction with a change of the system parameters. We discuss the influence of Van Hove singularities on the possibility of the reentrant FFLO phase occurrence, without a BCS precursor.

Critical behavior in one dimension: Unconventional pairing, phase separation, BEC-BCS crossover, and magnetic Lifshitz transition

Andrzej Ptok, Agnieszka Cichy, Karen Rodríguez +1 more

We study the superconducting properties of population-imbalanced ultracold Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices that can be effectively described by the spin-imbalanced attractive Hubbard model in the presence of a Zeeman magnetic field. We use the mean-field theory approach to obtain the ground-state phase diagrams including some unconventional superconducting phases such as the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, and the $\ensuremath{\eta}$ phase (an extremal case of the FFLO phase), both for the case of a fixed chemical potential and for a fixed number of particles. It allows us to determine optimal regimes for the FFLO phase as well as $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing stability. We also investigate the evolution from the weak coupling (BCS-like limit) to the strong coupling limit of tightly bound local pairs (BEC) with increasing attraction, at $T=0$. Finally, the obtained results show that in spite of the occurrence of the Lifshitz transition induced by an external magnetic field, the superconducting state can still exist in the system, at higher magnetic field values.

Phase Transitions in Quasi-One-Dimensional System with Unconventional Superconductivity

Andrzej Ptok, Agnieszka Cichy, Karen Rodríguez +1 more

The paper is devoted to a study of superconducting properties of population-imbalanced fermionic mixtures in quasi -one-dimensional optical lattices. The system can be effectively described by the attractive Hubbard model with the Zeeman magnetic field term. We investigated the ground-state phase diagram of the model as a function of the chemical potential and the magnetic field. The ground state of the system exhibits the conventional BCS-type superconductivity as well as the unconventional so-called Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, in which the total momentum of Cooper pairs is non-zero. We determine the orders of transitions as well as the behavior of order parameters with a change of the model parameters.

Population-imbalanced lattice fermions near the BCS-BEC crossover: Thermal physics of the breached pair and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phases

Madhuparna Karmakar, Pinaki Majumdar

We study $s$-wave superconductivity in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field, assume the extreme Pauli limit, and examine the role of spatial fluctuations in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover. We use a decomposition of the interaction in terms of an auxiliary pairing field, retain the static mode, and sample the pairing field via a Monte Carlo approach. The method requires iterative solution of the Bogoliubov--de-Gennes equations for amplitude- and phase-fluctuating configurations of the pairing field. We establish the full thermal phase diagram of this strong-coupling problem. At low field we observe the magnetized but homogeneous ``breached pair'' superfluid phase. It reveals that ${T}_{c}$ scales an order of magnitude below the mean-field estimate, spontaneous inhomogeneity in the field-induced magnetization, and a strong nonmonotonicity in the temperature dependence of the low-energy density of states. We compare our results to the experimental phase diagram of the imbalanced Fermi gas at unitarity. At higher field we obtain the modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases. The thermal transition from the FFLO phases to the normal state is strongly first order. We track the fermionic momentum distribution, the density of states, and the pairing structure factor deep into the normal state. The pairing structure factor retains weak signature of finite momentum pairing to a high temperature despite the low ${T}_{c}$ itself, while the spin-resolved density of states changes from the ``pseudogapped'' FFLO character to gapless and pseudogapped again with increasing temperature.

FFLO Superfluids in 2D Spin-Orbit Coupled Fermi Gases

Zhen Zheng, Ming Gong, Yichao Zhang +3 more

We show that the combination of spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field in a two-dimensional degenerate Fermi gas can lead to a larger parameter region for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases than that using spin-imbalanced Fermi gases. The resulting FFLO superfluids are also more stable due to the enhanced energy difference between FFLO and conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excited states. We clarify the crucial role of the symmetry of Fermi surface on the formation of finite momentum pairing. The phase diagram for FFLO superfluids is obtained in the BCS-BEC crossover region and possible experimental observations of FFLO phases are discussed.

Spin-imbalanced pairing and Fermi surface deformation in flat bands

Kukka-Emilia Huhtinen, Marek Tylutki, Pramod Kumar +3 more

We study the attractive Hubbard model with spin imbalance on two lattices featuring a flat band: the Lieb and kagome lattices. We present mean-field phase diagrams featuring exotic superfluid phases, similar to the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, whose stability is confirmed by dynamical mean-field theory. The nature of the pairing is found to be richer than just the Fermi surface shift responsible for the usual FFLO state. The presence of a flat band allows for changes in the particle momentum distributions at null energy cost. This facilitates formation of nontrivial superfluid phases via multiband Cooper pair formation: the momentum distribution of the spin component in the flat band deforms to mimic the Fermi surface of the other spin component residing in a dispersive band. The Fermi surface of the unpaired particles that are typical for gapless superfluids becomes deformed as well. The results highlight the profound effect of flat dispersions on Fermi surface instabilities, and provide a potential route for observing spin-imbalanced superfluidity and superconductivity.

Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with attractive interactions and transverse spin-orbit coupling

Monalisa Singh Roy, Manoranjan Kumar

We examine the existence and characteristics of the exotic Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase in a one-dimensional Fermi gas with attractive Hubbard interactions in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. We show that a robust FFLO phase can be created in the presence of attractive on-site interactions and Zeeman field, and that the addition of SOC suppresses the FFLO order and enhances the pair formation. In the absence of SOC, the system shows four phases: Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS), FFLO, multimode pairing, and fully polarized phases by tuning the Zeeman field $h$. The quantum transition between these phases is discontinuous with respect to $h$. In the presence of SOC, the transition from the BCS to FFLO phase becomes continuous. We present a complete phase diagram of this model both in the presence and in the absence of SOC at a quarter electron filling and also explore the effect of SOC on the FFLO phase.
