Spreading of correlations in the Falicov-Kimball model

Abstract

We study dynamical properties of the one- and two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model using lattice Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, we calculate the spreading of charge correlations in the equilibrium model and after an interaction quench. The results show a reduction of the light-cone velocity with interaction strength at low temperature, while the phase velocity increases. At higher temperature, the initial spreading is determined by the Fermi velocity of the noninteracting system and the maximum range of the correlations decreases with increasing interaction strength. Charge order correlations in the disorder potential enhance the range of the correlations. We also use the numerically exact lattice Monte Carlo results to benchmark the accuracy of equilibrium and nonequilibrium dynamical cluster approximation calculations. It is shown that the bias introduced by the mapping to a periodized cluster is substantial, and that from a numerical point of view, it is more efficient to simulate the lattice model directly.

Nonequilibrium dynamical cluster approximation study of the Falicov-Kimball model

Andreas J. Herrmann, Naoto Tsuji, Martin Eckstein +1 more

We use a nonequilibrium implementation of the dynamical cluster approximation (DCA) to study the effect of short-range correlations on the dynamics of the two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model after an interaction quench. As in the case of single-site dynamical mean-field theory, thermalization is absent in DCA simulations, and for quenches across the metal-insulator boundary, nearest-neighbor charge correlations in the nonthermal steady state are found to be larger than in the thermal state with identical energy. We investigate to what extent it is possible to define an effective temperature of the trapped state after a quench. Based on the ratio between the lesser and retarded Green's function, we conclude that a roughly thermal distribution is reached within the energy intervals corresponding to the momentum-patch dependent subbands of the spectral function. The effectively different chemical potentials of these distributions, however, lead to a very hot, or even negative, effective temperature in the energy intervals between these subbands.

Light-cone effect and supersonic correlations in one- and two-dimensional bosonic superfluids

Giuseppe Carleo, Federico Becca, Laurent Sanchez-Palencia +2 more

We study the spreading of density-density correlations in Bose-Hubbard models after a quench of the interaction strength, using time-dependent variational Monte Carlo simulations. It gives access to unprecedented long propagation times and to dimensions higher than one. In both one and two dimensions, we find ballistic light-cone spreading of correlations and extract accurate values of the light-cone velocity in the superfluid regime. We show that the spreading of correlations is generally supersonic, with a light-cone propagating faster than sound modes but slower than the maximum group velocity of density excitations, except at the Mott transition, where all the characteristic velocities are equal. Further, we show that in two dimensions the correlation spreading is highly anisotropic and presents nontrivial interference effects.

Exact out-of-time-ordered correlation functions for an interacting lattice fermion model

Naoto Tsuji, Philipp Werner, Masahito Ueda

Exact solutions for local equilibrium and nonequilibrium out-of-time-ordered correlation (OTOC) functions are obtained for a lattice fermion model with on-site interactions, namely, the Falicov-Kimball (FK) model, in the large dimensional and thermodynamic limit. Our approach is based on the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory generalized to an extended Kadanoff-Baym contour. We find that the density-density OTOC is most enhanced at intermediate coupling around the metal-insulator phase transition. In the high-temperature limit, the OTOC remains nontrivially finite and interaction dependent, even though dynamical charge correlations probed by an ordinary response function are completely suppressed. We propose an experiment to measure OTOCs of fermionic lattice systems including the FK and Hubbard models in ultracold atomic systems.

Thermodynamics of the two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model: A classical Monte Carlo study

Maciej M. Maśka, Katarzyna Czajka

The two-dimensional Falicov-Kimball (FK) model is analyzed using the Monte Carlo method. In the case of concentrations of both itinerant and localized particles equal to 0.5 we determine temperature dependence of specific heat, charge density wave susceptibility, and density-density correlation function. In the weak interaction regime we find a first order transition to the ordered state and anomalous temperature dependence of the correlation function. We construct the phase diagram of half-filled FK model. Also, the role of next-nearest-neighbor hopping on the phase diagram is analyzed. Lastly, we discuss the density of states and the spectral functions for the mobile particles in weak and strong interaction regime.

Thermodynamics of the three-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model

Martin Žonda, Pavol Farkašovský, Hana Čenčariková

The finite-temperature properties of the three-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model are studied in the symmetric case using the classical Monte-Carlo method. Analysing the temperature dependence of the specific heat C V,N we have found that the system exhibits the phase transition from the low-temperature ordered phase to the high-temperature disordered phase. The critical temperature of the phase transition is calculated numerically from the position of the maximum of C V,N and it is shown that its value in the three-dimensional case is considerably enhanced in comparison to the two-dimensional case. In addition, the temperature dependence of the itinerant electron density of states (DOS) is analysed. For very low-temperatures we have observed a formation of fine structure inside the principal gap that transforms to a pseudo-gap at higher temperatures and becomes temperature independent for sufficiently large temperatures. In this temperature region we have calculated DOS for different Coulomb interactions and found the Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition.
