Abstract

We propose an efficient strategy to find optimal control functions for state-to-state quantum control problems. Our procedure first chooses an input state trajectory, that can realize the desired transformation by adiabatic variation of the system Hamiltonian. The shortcut-to-adiabaticity formalism then provides a control Hamiltonian that realizes the reference trajectory exactly but on a finite time scale. As the final state is achieved with certainty, we define a cost functional that incorporates the resource requirements and a perturbative expression for robustness. We optimize this functional by systematically varying the reference trajectory. We demonstrate the method by application to population transfer in a laser driven three-level Λ-system, where we find solutions that are fast and robust against perturbations while maintaining a low peak laser power.

Robust stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage with invariant-based optimal control

Xue‐Ke Song, Fei Meng, Bao-Jie Liu +3 more

The stimulated Raman adiabatic passage shows an efficient technique that accurately transfers population between two discrete quantum states with the same parity in three-level quantum systems based on adiabatic evolution. This technique has widely theoretical and experimental applications in many fields of physics, chemistry, and beyond. Here, we present a general approach to robust stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage with invariant-based optimal control. By controlling the dynamical process, we inversely design a family of Hamiltonians with non-divergent Rabi frequencies that can realize fast and accurate population transfer from the first to the third level, while the systematic errors are largely suppressed in general. Furthermore, a detailed trade-off relation between the population of the intermediate state and the amplitudes of Rabi frequencies in the transfer process is illustrated. These results provide an optimal route toward manipulating the evolution of three-level quantum systems in future quantum information processing.

Robust stimulated Raman shortcuts to adiabatic passage with deep learning

Chahrazed Messikh, Azeddine Messikh

Abstract One of the challenging tasks in quantum control is to manipulate quantum systems with high fidelity and as fast as possible. Simulated Raman shortcuts to adiabatic passage with invariant-based optimal control is an efficient technique accurately used to transfer population between two quantum states in three-level systems. This technique requires tuning parameters continuously which results in analog quantum control. However, a digital quantum controller design is of great importance in the era of digital quantum computing. Here, we use deep reinforcement learning to obtain digital Stokes and pump fields that can realize fast and accurate population transfer between states with the same parity in the three-level Λ configuration. We find that deep reinforcement learning follows exactly theshortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) based on dynamical invariant and leads to a robust population transfer against systematic errors and dephasing. This is a promising enhancement in digital quantum information processing.

Robust stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage by invariant-based optimal control

Shortcuts to adiabaticity in five-level systems using counter-diabatic driving and time-rescaling optimization

Jiahui Zhang, Wenyuan Wang, Fuquan Dou

Shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) is a common protocol to realize high-fidelity and robust quantum control in various quantum systems. To date, STA has been widely applied in two- and three-level systems, whereas designing feasible strategies to achieve perfect quantum state engineering in multi-level systems still remains a challenging task. Here, we propose to use counterdiabatic (CD) driving and time-rescaling (TR) methods to construct multi-state stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage protocols for realizing robust and fast population transfer in chainwise-connected five-state systems. The first protocol is implemented by initially reducing the original five-state system to an equivalent two-state counterpart, and then designing the corresponding driving field by combining CD driving and unitary transformation. Further, we introduce the TR method to optimize the first protocol and thus offers an alternative solution. Numerical calculations show that both protocols can achieve complete population transfer and effectively suppress transient populations of all intermediate states. Compared with the first protocol, the optimized second exhibits better performance within a shorter evolution time.

Shortcuts to adiabatic population inversion via time-rescaling: stability and thermodynamic cost

Jair da Silva Andrade, Ângelo F. da Silva França, Bertúlio de Lima Bernardo

A shortcut to adiabaticity is concerned with the fast and robust manipulation of the dynamics of a quantum system which reproduces the effect of an adiabatic process. In this work, we use the time-rescaling method to study the problem of speeding up the population inversion of a two-level quantum system, and the fidelity of the fast dynamics versus systematic errors in the control parameters. This approach enables the generation of shortcuts from a prescribed slow dynamics by simply rescaling the time variable of the quantum evolution operator. It requires no knowledge of the eigenvalues and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian and, in principle, no additional coupling fields. From a quantum thermodynamic viewpoint, we also demonstrate that the main properties of the distribution of work required to drive the system along the shortcuts are unchanged with respect to the reference (slow) protocol.

Shortcut to adiabatic population transfer in quantum three-level systems: Effective two-level problems and feasible counterdiabatic driving

Yichao Li, Xi Chen

Shortcuts to adiabaticity in various quantum systems have attracted much attention with their wide applications in quantum information processing and quantum control. In this paper, we concentrate on a stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage in quantum three-level systems. To implement counterdiabatic driving but without additional coupling, we first reduce the quantum three-level systems to effective two-level problems at large intermediate-level detuning, or on resonance, apply counterdiabatic driving along with the unitary transformation and eventually modify the pump and Stokes pulses for achieving fast and high-fidelity population transfer. The required laser intensity and stability against parameter variation are further discussed, to demonstrate the advantage of shortcuts to adiabaticity.
