Abstract

The experimental realization of the Harper-Hofstadter model in ultracold atomic gases has placed fractional states of matter in these systems within reach-a fractional Chern insulator state (FCI) is expected to emerge for sufficiently strong interactions when half-filling the lowest band. The experimental setups naturally allow us to probe the dynamics of this topological state; yet little is known about its out-of-equilibrium properties. We explore, using density matrix renormalization group simulations, the response of the FCI state to spatially localized perturbations. After confirming the static properties of the phase we show that the characteristic, gapless features are clearly visible in the edge dynamics. We find that a local edge perturbation in this model propagates chirally independent of the perturbation strength. This contrasts the behavior of single particle models with counterpropagating edge states, such as the noninteracting Harper-Hofstadter model, where the chirality is manifest only for weak perturbations. Additionally, our simulations show that there is inevitable density leakage from the first row of sites into the bulk, preventing a naive chiral Luttinger theory interpretation of the dynamics.

Measurable signatures of bosonic fractional Chern insulator states and their fractional excitations in a quantum-gas microscope

Botao Wang, Xiaoyu Dong, André Eckardt

The recent progress in engineering topological band structures in optical-lattice systems makes it promising to study fractional Chern insulator states in these systems. Here we consider a realistic finite system of a few repulsively interacting bosons on a square lattice with magnetic flux and sharp edges, as it can be realized in quantum-gas microscopes. We investigate under which conditions a fractional Chern insulator state corresponding to the Laughlin-like state at filling \nu=1/2 ν = 1 / 2 can be stabilized and its fractional excitations probed. Using numerical simulations, we find an incompressible bulk density at the expected filling for systems, whose linear extent is as small as 6-8 sites. This is a promising result, since such small systems are favorable with respect to the required adiabatic state preparation. Moreover, we also see very clear signatures of excitations with fractional charge in response both to static pinning potentials and dynamical flux insertion. Since the compressible edges, which are found to feature chiral currents, can serve as a reservoir, these observations are robust against changes in the total particle number. Our results suggest that signatures of both a fractional Chern insulator state and its fractional excitations can be found under realistic experimental conditions.

Fractional Chern insulator edges: crystalline effects and optical measurements

Yan-Qi Wang, Johannes Motruk, Andrey Grankin +1 more

Edge states of chiral topologically ordered phases are commonly described by chiral Luttinger liquids, effective theories that are exact only in the hydrodynamic limit. Motivated by recent bulk observations of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) in two-dimensional materials and by synthetic realizations in ultracold atoms, we revisit this framework and quantify deviations from the hydrodynamic limit due to lattice effects. Using a combination of analytical arguments and numerical simulations, we disentangle universal from nonuniversal edge properties. We outline experimental probes in excitonic FCIs and in ultracold atom systems, and in particular propose time-resolved edge spectroscopy to directly access the predicted exponents and velocities.

Phase transitions and adiabatic preparation of a fractional Chern insulator in a boson cold-atom model

Johannes Motruk, Frank Pollmann

We investigate the fate of hardcore bosons in a Harper-Hofstadter model which was experimentally realized by Aidelsburger et al. [Nat. Phys. 11, 162 (2015)] at half-filling of the lowest band. We discuss the stability of an emergent fractional Chern insulator (FCI) state in a finite region of the phase diagram that is separated from a superfluid state by a first-order transition when tuning the band topology following the protocol used in the experiment. Since crossing a first-order transition is unfavorable for adiabatically preparing the FCI state, we extend the model to stabilize a featureless insulating state. The transition between this phase and the topological state proves to be continuous, providing a path in parameter space along which an FCI state could be adiabatically prepared. To further corroborate this statement, we perform time-dependent DMRG calculations which demonstrate that the FCI state may indeed be reached by adiabatically tuning a simple product state.

From hidden order to skyrmions: Quantum Hall states in an extended Hofstadter-Fermi-Hubbard model

Fabian J. Pauw, Ulrich Schollwöck, Nathan Goldman +2 more

The interplay between topology and strong interactions gives rise to a variety of exotic quantum phases, including fractional quantum Hall states and their lattice analogs—fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). Such topologically ordered states host fractionalized excitations and, for spinful systems, are often accompanied by ferromagnetism and skyrmions. Here, we study a Hofstadter-Hubbard model of spinful fermions on a square lattice, extended by nearest-neighbor interactions. Using large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations, we demonstrate the emergence of a spin-polarized 1 / 3 -Laughlin-like FCI phase, characterized by a quantized many-body Chern number, a finite charge gap, and hidden off-diagonal long-range order. We further investigate the quantum Hall ferromagnet at ν = 1 and its skyrmionic excitations upon doping. In particular, we find that nearest-neighbor repulsion is sufficient to stabilize both particle- and hole-skyrmions in the ground state around ν = 1 , whereas we do not find such textures around ν = 1 / 3 . The diagnostic toolbox presented in this work, based on local densities, correlation functions, and spin-resolved observables, is directly applicable in quantum gas microscopy experiments. Our results open new pathways for experimental exploration of FCIs with spin textures in both ultracold atom and electronic systems.

Edge excitations in fractional Chern insulators

Wei-Wei Luo, Wen-Chao Chen, Yi-Fei Wang +1 more

Recent theoretical papers have demonstrated the realization of fractional quantum anomalous Hall states (also called fractional Chern insulators) in topological flat band lattice models without an external magnetic field. Such newly proposed lattice systems play a vital role in obtaining a large class of fractional topological phases. Here we report the exact numerical studies of edge excitations for such systems in a disk geometry loaded with hard-core bosons, which will serve as a more viable experimental probe for such topologically ordered states. We find convincing numerical evidence of a series of edge excitations characterized by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory for the bosonic fractional Chern insulators in both the honeycomb disk Haldane model and the kagome-lattice disk model. We further verify these current-carrying chiral edge states by inserting a central flux to test their compressibility.

Luttinger's Theorem Violation and Green's Function Topological Invariants in a Fractional Chern Insulator

Anton A. Markov, Andrey M. Nikishin, Nigel R. Cooper +2 more

Luttinger's theorem constrains the particle density of interacting fermions through global properties of the single-particle Green's function, and its violation signals a breakdown of the identification between the quantized Hall response and the Green-function-based Ishikawa-Matsuyama invariant. This phenomenon becomes especially compelling in strongly correlated topological phases, such as fractional Chern insulators, where fractionalized quasiparticles lack an adiabatic connection to electrons, raising the question of how Green's-function-based topological invariants manifest in such phases. Using exact diagonalization of the fermionic Harper-Hofstadter-Hubbard model, we compute bulk single-particle Green's functions deep inside a fractional Chern insulating phase and directly evaluate the Luttinger count, its possible correction (the Luttinger integral), and the Ishikawa-Matsuyama invariant $N_3[\mathrm{G}]$. We demonstrate a clear violation of Luttinger's theorem and show that the fractional nature of the many-body Chern number is encoded in the Středa response of the Luttinger integral, while the integer invariant $N_3[\mathrm{G}]$ arises from the Středa response of the Luttinger count. We also analytically prove that $N_3[\mathrm{G}]$ is fully determined by the Luttinger count together with the Chern number of the occupied Bloch band, upon neglecting Bloch-band mixing. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to extract all Green-function-based topological invariants from local density-of-states measurements, experimentally accessible in fractional quantum Hall systems.
