Bounds on the entanglement entropy of droplet states in the XXZ spin chain

Abstract

We consider a class of one-dimensional quantum spin systems on the finite lattice Λ⊂Z, related to the XXZ spin chain in its Ising phase. It includes in particular the so-called droplet Hamiltonian. The entanglement entropy of energetically low-lying states over a bipartition Λ = B ∪ Bc is investigated and proven to satisfy a logarithmic bound in terms of min{n, |B|, |Bc|}, where n denotes the maximal number of down spins in the considered state. Upon addition of any (positive) random potential, the bound becomes uniformly constant on average, thereby establishing an area law. The proof is based on spectral methods: a deterministic bound on the local (many-body integrated) density of states is derived from an energetically motivated Combes–Thomas estimate.

Entanglement entropy bounds in the higher spin XXZ chain

Christoph Fischbacher, Oluwadara Ogunkoya

We consider the Heisenberg XXZ spin-J chain (J∈N/2) with anisotropy parameter Δ. Assuming that Δ > 2J and introducing threshold energies EK≔K1−2JΔ, we show that the bipartite entanglement entropy of states belonging to any spectral subspace with energy less than EK+1 satisfies a logarithmically corrected area law with the prefactor (2⌊K/J⌋ − 2). This generalizes the previous results by Beaud and Warzel [J. Math. Phys. 59, 012109 (2018)], as well as by Abdul-Rahman, Fischbacher, and Stolz [Ann. Henri Poincaré 21, 2327 (2020)], who covered the spin-1/2 case.

Entanglement entropy bounds for droplet states of the XXZ model on the strip

Christoph Fischbacher, Lee Fisher

The scaling behavior of the entanglement entropy of droplet states in Heisenberg spin-1/2 XXZ model defined on a strip of width M under the presence of a non-negative background magnetic field is investigated. Without any assumptions on V, a logarithmically corrected area law is shown. Assuming that the values of V are i.i.d. random variables, an area law in expectation is obtained.

Entanglement Rates and Area Laws

Karel Van Acoleyen, Michael Mariën, Frank Verstraete

We prove an upper bound on the maximal rate at which a Hamiltonian interaction can generate entanglement in a bipartite system. The scaling of this bound as a function of the subsystem dimension on which the Hamiltonian acts nontrivially is optimal and is exponentially improved over previously known bounds. As an application, we show that a gapped quantum many-body spin system on an arbitrary lattice satisfies an area law for the entanglement entropy if and only if any other state with which it is adiabatically connected (i.e., any state in the same phase) also satisfies an area law.

Entanglement and matrix elements of observables in interacting integrable systems

Tyler LeBlond, Krishnanand Mallayya, Lev Vidmar +1 more

We study the bipartite von Neumann entanglement entropy and matrix elements of local operators in the eigenstates of an interacting integrable Hamiltonian (the paradigmatic spin-1/2 XXZ chain), and we contrast their behavior with that of quantum chaotic systems. We find that the leading term of the average (over all eigenstates in the zero magnetization sector) eigenstate entanglement entropy has a volume-law coefficient that is smaller than the universal (maximal entanglement) one in quantum chaotic systems. This establishes the entanglement entropy as a powerful measure to distinguish integrable models from generic ones. Remarkably, our numerical results suggest that the volume-law coefficient of the average entanglement entropy of eigenstates of the spin-1/2 XXZ Hamiltonian is very close to, or the same as, the one for translationally invariant quadratic fermionic models. We also study matrix elements of local operators in the eigenstates of the spin-1/2 XXZ Hamiltonian at the center of the spectrum. For the diagonal matrix elements, we show evidence that the support does not vanish with increasing system size, while the average eigenstate-to-eigenstate fluctuations vanish in a power-law fashion. For the off-diagonal matrix elements, we show that they follow a distribution that is close to (but not quite) log-normal, and that their variance is a well-defined function of ω=E_{α}-E_{β} ({E_{α}} are the eigenenergies) proportional to 1/D, where D is the Hilbert space dimension.

Entanglement subvolume law for 2d frustration-free spin systems

Anurag Anshu, Itai Arad, David Gosset

Let H be a frustration-free Hamiltonian describing a 2D grid of qudits with local interactions, a unique ground state, and local spectral gap lower bounded by a positive constant. For any bipartition defined by a vertical cut of length L running from top to bottom of the grid, we prove that the corresponding entanglement entropy of the ground state of H is upper bounded by Õ(L 5/3). For the special case of a 1D chain, our result provides a new area law which improves upon prior work, in terms of the scaling with qudit dimension and spectral gap. In addition, for any bipartition of the grid into a rectangular region A and its complement, we show that the entanglement entropy is upper bounded as Õ(|∂ A|5/3) where ∂ A is the boundary of A. This represents a subvolume bound on entanglement in frustration-free 2D systems. In contrast with previous work, our bounds depend on the local (rather than global) spectral gap of the Hamiltonian. We prove our results using a known method which bounds the entanglement entropy of the ground state in terms of certain properties of an approximate ground state projector (AGSP). To this end, we construct a new AGSP which is based on a robust polynomial approximation of the AND function and we show that it achieves an improved trade-off between approximation error and entanglement.

Boundedness of entanglement entropy for the ground state of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model with random transverse field at large disorder

Massimo Campanino

We consider the ground state of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model with transverse field hx in one dimension depending on the site x∈Z in a finite volume. We assume hx = λξx, where (ξx),x∈Z is a family of strictly positive i.i.d. random variables with a positive density at 0 satisfying the condition. E(ξ0−δ)<∞ for some δ > 0 and λ > 0 is the disorder parameter. We prove that if λ is sufficiently large, the entanglement entropy of the ground state has a stochastic bound uniform with respect to the volume.
