Abstract

Abstract We study periodically driven closed systems with a long-ranged Hamiltonian by considering a generalized Kitaev chain with pairing terms which decay with distance as a power law characterized by exponent α . Starting from an initial unentangled state, we show that all local quantities synchronize with the driving frequency ω at late times and relax to well-defined steady state values in the thermodynamic limit and after drive cycles for any α and ω . We introduce a distance measure, , that characterizes the approach of the reduced density matrix of a subsystem of l sites to that of the final steady state. We chart out the n dependence of and identify a critical value (which depends only on the time-averaged Hamiltonian) below which they generically decay to zero as . For , in contrast, for with at least one intermediate dynamical transition. An identical behavior is found for relaxation of all non-trivial correlation functions to their steady-state values. We also study the mutual information propagation to understand the nature of the entanglement spreading in space with increasing n for such periodically driven long-ranged systems. We point out existence of qualitatively new features (absent for ) in the space-time dependence of mutual information for , where is the largest critical frequency for the dynamical transition for a given α such as the presence of multiple light cone-like structures which persists even when α is large. We also show that the space-time dependence of the mutual information of long-ranged Hamiltonians with differs qualitatively from those with for any drive frequency and relate this to the behavior of the Floquet group velocity of such driven system.

Dynamical relaxation of correlators in periodically driven integrable quantum systems

Sreemayee Aditya, Sutapa Samanta, Arnab Sen +2 more

We show that the correlation functions of a class of periodically driven integrable closed quantum systems approach their steady-state value as ${n}^{\ensuremath{-}(\ensuremath{\alpha}+1)/\ensuremath{\beta}}$, where $n$ is the number of drive cycles and $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ denote positive integers. We find that, generically, $\ensuremath{\beta}=2$ within a dynamical phase characterized by a fixed $\ensuremath{\alpha}$; however, its value can change to $\ensuremath{\beta}=3$ or $\ensuremath{\beta}=4$ either at critical drive frequencies separating two dynamical phases or at special points within a phase. We show that such decays are realized in both driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) and one-dimensional (1D) transverse field Ising models, discuss the role of symmetries of the Floquet spectrum in determining $\ensuremath{\beta}$, and chart out the values of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ realized in these models. We analyze the SSH model for a continuous drive protocol using a Floquet perturbation theory which provides analytical insight into the behavior of the correlation functions in terms of its Floquet Hamiltonian. This is supplemented by an exact numerical study of a similar behavior for the 1D Ising model driven by a square pulse protocol. For both models, we find a crossover timescale ${n}_{c}$ which diverges at the transition. We also unravel a long-time oscillatory behavior of the correlators when the critical drive frequency, ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c}$, is approached from below $(\ensuremath{\omega}<{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{c})$. We tie such behavior to the presence of multiple stationary points in the Floquet spectrum of these models and provide an analytic expression for the time period of these oscillations.

Entanglement generation in periodically driven integrable systems: Dynamical phase transitions and steady state

Arnab Sen, Sourav Nandy, K. Sengupta

We study a class of periodically driven $d$-dimensional integrable models and show that after $n$ drive cycles with frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$, pure states with non-area-law entanglement entropy ${S}_{n}(l)\ensuremath{\sim}{l}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}(n,\ensuremath{\omega})}$ are generated, where $l$ is the linear dimension of the subsystem, and $d\ensuremath{-}1\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\alpha}(n,\ensuremath{\omega})\ensuremath{\le}d$. The exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}(n,\ensuremath{\omega})$ eventually approaches $d$ (volume law) for large enough $l$ when $n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. We identify and analyze the crossover phenomenon from an area $(S\ensuremath{\sim}{l}^{d\ensuremath{-}1}$ for $d\ensuremath{\ge}1$) to a volume $(S\ensuremath{\sim}{l}^{d})$ law and provide a criterion for their occurrence which constitutes a generalization of Hastings's theorem to driven integrable systems in one dimension. We also find that ${S}_{n}$ generically decays to ${S}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}$ as ${(\ensuremath{\omega}/n)}^{(d+2)/2}$ for fast and ${(\ensuremath{\omega}/n)}^{d/2}$ for slow periodic drives; these two dynamical phases are separated by a topological transition in the eigenspectrum of the Floquet Hamiltonian. This dynamical transition manifests itself in the temporal behavior of all local correlation functions and does not require a critical point crossing during the drive. We find that these dynamical phases show a rich re-entrant behavior as a function of $\ensuremath{\omega}$ for $d=1$ models and also discuss the dynamical transition for $d>1$ models. Finally, we study entanglement properties of the steady state and show that singular features (cusps and kinks in $d=1$) appear in ${S}_{\ensuremath{\infty}}$ as a function of $\ensuremath{\omega}$ whenever there is a crossing of the Floquet bands. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Entanglement transitions in a periodically driven non-Hermitian Ising chain

Tista Banerjee, K. Sengupta

We study entanglement transitions in a periodically driven Ising chain in the presence of an imaginary transverse field $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ as a function of drive frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D}$. In the high drive amplitude and frequency regime, we find a critical value $\ensuremath{\gamma}={\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$ below which the steady-state half-chain entanglement entropy, ${S}_{L/2}$, scales with chain length $L$ as ${S}_{L/2}\ensuremath{\sim}lnL$; in contrast, for $\ensuremath{\gamma}>{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$, it becomes independent of $L$. In the small $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ limit, we compute the coefficient, $\ensuremath{\alpha}$, of the $lnL$ term analytically using a Floquet perturbation theory and trace its origin to the presence of Fisher-Hartwig jump singularities in the correlation function of the driven chain. We also study the frequency dependence of ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}$ and show that ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{c}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ at special drive frequencies; at these frequencies, which we analytically compute, ${S}_{L/2}$ remain independent of $L$ for all $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. This behavior can be traced to an approximate emergent symmetry of the Floquet Hamiltonian at these drive frequencies which we identify. Finally, we discus the behavior of the driven system at low and intermediate drive frequencies. Our analysis shows the presence of volume law behavior of the entanglement in this regime ${S}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\ell}$ for small subsystem length $\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\le}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{*}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D})$. We identify ${\ensuremath{\ell}}^{*}({\ensuremath{\omega}}_{D})$ and tie its existence to the effective long-range nature of the Floquet Hamiltonian of the driven chain for small subsystem size. We discuss the applicability of our results to other integrable non-Hermitian models.

Aperiodically Driven Integrable Systems and Their Emergent Steady States

Sourav Nandy, Arnab Sen, Diptiman Sen

Does a closed quantum many-body system that is continually driven with a time-dependent Hamiltonian finally reach a steady state? This question has only recently been answered for driving protocols that are periodic in time, where the long-time behavior of the local properties synchronizes with the drive and can be described by an appropriate periodic ensemble. Here, we explore the consequences of breaking the time-periodic structure of the drive with additional aperiodic noise in a class of integrable systems. We show that the resulting unitary dynamics leads to new emergent steady states in at least two cases. While any typical realization of random noise causes eventual heating to an infinite-temperature ensemble for all local properties in spite of the system being integrable, noise that is self-similar in time leads to an entirely different steady state (which we dub the ``geometric generalized Gibbs ensemble'') that emerges only after an astronomically large time scale. To understand the approach to the steady state, we study the temporal behavior of certain coarse-grained quantities in momentum space that fully determine the reduced density matrix for a subsystem with size much smaller than the total system. Such quantities provide a concise description for any drive protocol in integrable systems that are reducible to a free-fermion representation.

Equilibrium states of generic quantum systems subject to periodic driving

Achilleas Lazarides, Arnab Das, Roderich Moessner

When a closed quantum system is driven periodically with period T, it approaches a periodic state synchronized with the drive in which any local observable measured stroboscopically approaches a steady value. For integrable systems, the resulting behavior is captured by a periodic version of a generalized Gibbs ensemble. By contrast, here we show that for generic nonintegrable interacting systems, local observables become independent of the initial state entirely. Essentially, this happens because Floquet eigenstates of the driven system at quasienergy ω(α) consist of a mixture of the exponentially many eigenstates of the undriven Hamiltonian, which are thus drawn from the entire extensive undriven spectrum. This is a form of equilibration which depends only on the Hilbert space of the undriven system and not on any details of its Hamiltonian.

Disordered Kitaev chain with long-range pairing: Loschmidt echo revivals and dynamical phase transitions

Utkarsh Mishra, R Jafari, Alireza Akbari

Abstract We explore the dynamics of long-range Kitaev chain by varying pairing interaction exponent. It is well known that the distinctive features of the nonequilibrium dynamics of a closed quantum system are closely related to the equilibrium phase transitions. Specifically, the return probability (Loschmidt echo) of the system to its initial state, in the finite-size system, is expected to exhibit periodicity after a sudden quench to a quantum critical point. The time of the first revivals scales inversely with the maximum of the group velocity. We show that, contrary to expectations, the periodicity of the return probability breaks for a sudden quench to the non-trivial quantum critical point. Further, we find that the periodicity of the return probability scales inversely with the group velocity at the gap closing point for a quench to the trivial critical point of truly long-range pairing case. Also, analyzing the effect of averaging quenched disorder shows that the revivals in the short-range pairing cases are more robust against disorder than that of the long-range pairing case. We also study the effect of disorder on the non-analyticities of the rate function of the return probability which introduced as a witness of the dynamical phase transition. We show that the non-analyticities in the rate function of return probability are washed out in the presence of strong disorders.
