Abstract

We consider a holographic model of two 1+1-dimensional heat baths at different temperatures joined at time t = 0, such that a steady state heat-current region forms and expands in space for times t > 0. After commenting on the causal structure of the dual 2+1-dimensional spacetime, we present how to calculate the time-dependent entanglement entropy of the boundary system holographically. We observe that the increase rate of the entanglement entropy satisfies certain bounds known from the literature on entanglement tsunamis. Furthermore, we check the validity of several non-trivial entanglement inequalities in this dynamic system.

Time evolution of entanglement for holographic steady state formation

Johanna Erdmenger B, D. Fernández, Mario Flory +3 more

Within gauge/gravity duality, we consider the local quench-like time evolution obtained by joining two 1+1-dimensional heat baths at different temperatures at time t = 0. A steady state forms and expands in space. For the 2+1-dimensional gravity dual, we find that the “shockwaves” expanding the steady-state region are of spacelike nature in the bulk despite being null at the boundary. However, they do not transport information. Moreover, by adapting the time-dependent Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi prescription, we holographically calculate the entanglement entropy and also the mutual information for different entangling regions. For general temperatures, we find that the entanglement entropy increase rate satisfies the same bound as in the ‘entanglement tsunami’ setups. For small temperatures of the two baths, we derive an analytical formula for the time dependence of the entanglement entropy. This replaces the entanglement tsunami-like behaviour seen for high temperatures. Finally, we check that strong subadditivity holds in this time-dependent system, as well as further more general entanglement inequalities for five or more regions recently derived for the static case.

Entanglement entropy in holographic CFTs with generic boundaries

Fabio Ori, Peng-Xiang Hao

Entanglement entropy in holographic conformal field theories with boundaries of generic spacetime signature cannot be described entirely within the standard holographic duality to a real bulk spacetime. We show, both in static and time-dependent setups, that an exact match with the conformal field theory predictions in two boundary dimensions entails an extension of the dual spacetime to complex coordinates. As a consequence, relevant bulk objects such as Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces and branes are in general complex, yet anchored on a real asymptotic boundary preserving the physical meaning of field-theoretical quantities. We also provide a third numerical check of the holographic prediction with a two-dimensional system of free Gaussian fermions exhibiting the same asymptotic regimes across different entanglement phases.

Holographic entanglement entropy with conformal boundary conditions

Elena Cáceres, Hare Krishna, Harita Palani Balaji +1 more

We study holographic entanglement entropy in 3-dimensional AdS gravity with conformal boundary conditions which fix the conformal class of the boundary metric and its extrinsic curvature, $K$, while leaving the Weyl mode dynamical. Extending Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Dong's replica construction, we derive the corresponding holographic entanglement entropy formula. We show that the fluctuating Weyl mode does not contribute additional entropy. The entropy of the full boundary is therefore the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, and the entropy of a boundary subregion continues to obey the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription, namely, the area of a minimal surface divided by $4G_N$. We carry out explicit calculations for global AdS, rotating and non-rotating BTZ geometries. For an interval in AdS$_3$ we find that the $K$-dependent holographic entanglement entropy is governed by $c_m=\frac{3 \ell}{2 G_N}.$ For a thermal state at high conformal temperatures we find that, the entropy is governed by $c_{\rm eff}=\frac{3 \ell}{2 G_N} \frac{K \ell- \sqrt{K^2 \ell^2-4}}{2}$, the same effective central charge that governs the Cardy-like density of states, in agreement with previous results in the literature. Finally, we also compute the entanglement entropy directly from the conjectured dual boundary theory - a holographic CFT coupled with time-like Liouville theory and deformed by a marginal $T \bar{T}$ like operator - and find $S_{EE} =\frac{c_{\rm eff}}{3} \ln\!\left(\frac{2 R \sinϕ_0}ε\right) .$ This result for the state with no operator insertions (vacuum state ), provides an independent boundary realization of $c_{\mathrm{eff}}$ while clarifying that this state is not the state dual to global AdS.

Entanglement tsunami in ( 1 + 1 )-dimensions

Stefan Leichenauer, Mudassir Moosa

We study the time dependence of the entanglement entropy of disjoint intervals following a global quantum quench in ($1+1$)-dimensional CFTs at large $c$ with a sparse spectrum. The result agrees with a holographic calculation but differs from the free field theory answer. In particular, a simple model of free quasiparticle propagation is not adequate for CFTs with a holographic dual. We elaborate on the entanglement tsunami proposal of Liu and Suh and show how it can be used to reproduce the holographic answer.

Covariant holographic entanglement negativity for adjacent subsystems in AdS3/CFT2

Parul Jain, Vinay Malvimat, Sayid Mondal +1 more

We propose a covariant holographic entanglement negativity construction for time dependent mixed states of adjacent intervals in (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories dual to non-static bulk AdS3 configurations. Our prescription applied to (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories with a conserved charge dual to non-extremal and extremal rotating BTZ black holes exactly reproduces the corresponding replica technique results, in the large central charge limit. We also utilize our construction to obtain the time dependent holographic entanglement negativity for the mixed state in question for the (1+1)-dimensional CFT dual to a bulk Vaidya-AdS3 configuration.

Holographic entanglement entropy of local quenches in AdS4/CFT3: a finite-element approach

A. Jahn, Tadashi Takayanagi

Understanding quantum entanglement in interacting higher-dimensional conformal field theories is a challenging task, as direct analytical calculations are often impossible to perform. With holographic entanglement entropy, calculations of entanglement entropy turn into a problem of finding extremal surfaces in a curved spacetime, which we tackle with a numerical finiteelement approach. In this paper, we compute the entanglement entropy between two half-spaces resulting from a local quench, triggered by a local operator insertion in a CFT3. We find that the growth of entanglement entropy at early time agrees with the prediction from the first law, as long as the conformal dimension Δ of the local operator is small. Within the limited time region that we can probe numerically, we observe deviations from the first law and a transition to sub-linear growth at later time. In particular, the time dependence at large Δ shows qualitative differences to the simple logarithmic time dependence familiar from the CFT2 case. We hope that our work will motivate further studies, both numerical and analytical, on entanglement entropy in higher dimensions.
