Motivated by recent experimental observations in α-RuCl_{3}, we study the K-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field. By a slave-particle representation and variational Monte Carlo calculations, we reproduce the phase transition from zigzag magnetic order to a field-induced disordered phase. The nature of this state depends crucially on the field orientation. For particular field directions in the honeycomb plane, we find a gapless Dirac spin liquid, in agreement with recent experiments on α-RuCl_{3}. For a range of out-of-plane fields, we predict the existence of a Kalmeyer-Laughlin-type chiral spin liquid, which would show an integer-quantized thermal Hall effect.
The possible existence of a quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase, an exotic state of matter with long-range quantum entanglement and fractionalized excitations, in
α-RuCl
3 has sparked widespread interests in exploring QSLs in various Kitaev models under magnetic fields. Recently, a
K-
J-
Γ-
Γ′ model has been proposed to accurately describe the compound by fitting the measured thermodynamic data, where
J is Heisenberg interaction, and
Γ,
Γ′ are off-diagonal exchanges on top of the dominant Kitaev coupling
K. Based on this effective model, an intermediate QSL phase in presence of an out-of-plane fields along the
[111] direction, between the low-field zigzag order and high-field polarized phase, has been predicted. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG), and variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations, we address the nature of this QSL phase in the honeycomb
K-
J-
Γ-
Γ′ model under the
[111]-direction field. Our DMRG calculations find the algebraic-like decay of spin correlation function, the finite spin scalar chiral order, and lattice nematic order. Together with the XTRG results of power-law specific heat at low temperature, our findings naturally suggest a gapless nematic chiral spin liquid. On the other hand, our VMC study finds a gapped nematic chiral spin liquid with the variational energy very close to that obtained in DMRG. As VMC finds a very small gap that is beyond the current resolution of both ground-state DMRG and finite-temperature XTRG calculations on finite-width cylinders, we resort the full clarification for the nature of the intermediate QSL to future studies. Lastly, we discuss the implications of our results to the recent experiment on
α-RuCl

Γ′ model.
In addition to the Kitaev (K) interaction, candidate Kitaev materials also possess Heisenberg (J) and off-diagonal symmetric (Γ) couplings. We investigate the quantum (S=1/2) K-J-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice by a variational Monte Carlo method. In addition to the "generic" Kitaev spin liquid (KSL), we find that there is just one proximate KSL (PKSL) phase, while the rest of the phase diagram contains different magnetically ordered states. The PKSL is a gapless Z_{2} state with 14 Majorana cones, which in contrast to the KSL has a gapless spin response. In a magnetic field applied normal to the honeycomb plane, it realizes two of Kitaev's gapped chiral spin-liquid phases, of which one is non-Abelian with Chern number ν=5 and the other is Abelian with ν=4. These two phases could be distinguished by their thermal Hall conductance.
Recent experimental evidence for a field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) in
α-RuCl
3 calls for an understanding for the ground state of honeycomb Kitaev model under a magnetic field. In this work we address the nature of an enigmatic gapless paramagnetic phase in the antiferromagnetic Kitave model, under an intermediate magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Combining theoretical and numerical efforts, we identify this gapless phase as a
U(1) QSL with spinon Fermi surfaces. We also reveal the nature of continuous quantum phase transitions involving this
U(1) QSL, and obtain a phase diagram of the Kitaev model as a function of bond anisotropy and perpendicular magnetic field.
The frustrated magnet $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ is one of the prime candidates for realizing a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, the existence of a field-induced intermediate QSL phase in this material remains under debate. Here, we employ sign-free numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model on the honeycomb lattice with $K=\ensuremath{-}2J$ under an applied magnetic field along the
z direction. Our findings reveal that the system undergoes a direct quantum phase transition from a zigzag magnetically ordered phase to a spin-polarized phase at zero temperature, which belongs to the 3D XY universality class. At finite temperatures, a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition line separates the spin-polarized phase from a quasi-long-range ordered state, eventually terminating at the quantum critical point. Our results convincingly show that there is no intermediate QSL phase in the KH model with a
z-direction magnetic field, which we believe will shed important light on understanding experimental observations in $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$.
We study the spin-1/2 Kitaev honeycomb gapless spin liquid in the presence of Stone-Wales-type local lattice defects with odd-sided plaquettes. While the clean Kitaev model has no finite-temperature phase transitions, we find that introducing a finite defect density n_{d}≈10^{-4}-10^{-2} produces a true phase transition with a sizeable T_{c}≈2n_{d} in units of the Kitaev exchange. The resulting non-Abelian chiral quantum spin liquid exhibits scalar spin chirality and electron orbital magnetization which peak near lattice defects. This disorder-driven instability relies on an emergent long range ferromagnetic interaction r^{-γ} (γ≈2.7) between defect chiralities, mediated by the nearly gapless fermions, with implications for topology generation in Dirac cones with fluctuating mass terms.
Abstract Pursuing the exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) state in the Kitaev material α-RuCl3 has intrigued great research interest recently. A fascinating question is on the possible existence of a field-induced QSL phase in this compound. Here we perform high-field magnetization measurements of α-RuCl3 up to 102 T employing the non-destructive and destructive pulsed magnets. Under the out-of-plane field along the c* axis (i.e., perpendicular to the honeycomb plane), two quantum phase transitions are uncovered at respectively 35 T and about 83 T, between which lies an intermediate phase as the predicted QSL. This is in sharp contrast to the case with in-plane fields, where a single transition is found at around 7 T and the intermediate QSL phase is absent instead. By measuring the magnetization data with fields tilted from the c* axis up to 90° (i.e., in-plane direction), we obtain the field-angle phase diagram that contains the zigzag, paramagnetic, and QSL phases. Based on the K-J-Γ-
Γ′ Γ ′ model for α-RuCl3 with a large Kitaev term we perform density matrix renormalization group simulations and reproduce the quantum phase diagram in excellent agreement with experiments.
