Abstract

Abstract We study the SYK model with complex fermions, in the presence of an all-to-all q-body interaction, with a non-vanishing chemical potential. We find that, in the large q limit, this model can be solved exactly and the corresponding Lyapunov exponent can be obtained semi-analytically. The resulting Lyapunov exponent is a sensitive function of the chemical potential μ. Even when the coupling J, which corresponds to the disorder averaged values of the all to all fermion interaction, is large, values of μ which are exponentially small compared to J lead to suppression of the Lyapunov exponent.

Phase transition and chaos in charged SYK model

Nilakash Sorokhaibam

Abstract We study chaotic-integrable transition and the nature of quantum chaos in SYK model with chemical potential. We use a novel numerical technique to calculate the partition function explicitly. We show the phase transition in the presence of large chemical potential. We also show that a mass-like term consisting of two fermion random interaction (q = 2 SYK term) does not give rise to a sharp transition. We find that turning on the chemical potential suppresses the Lyapunov exponent in the chaotic phase exponentially.

The chiral SYK model

Biao Lian, Shivaji L. Sondhi, Zhenbin Yang

Abstract We study the generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model to a 1 + 1 dimensional chiral SYK model of N flavors of right-moving chiral Majorana fermions with all-to-all random 4-fermion interactions. The interactions in this model are exactly marginal, leading to an exact scaling symmetry. We show the Schwinger-Dyson equation of this model in the large N limit is exactly solvable. In addition, we show this model is integrable for small N ≤ 6 by bosonization. Surprisingly, the two point function in the large N limit has exactly the same form as that for N = 4, although the four point functions of the two cases are quite different. The ground state entropy in the large N limit is the same as that of N free chiral Majorana fermions, leading to a zero ground state entropy density. The OTOC of the model in the large N limit exhibits a non-trivial spacetime structure reminscent of that found by Gu and Kitaev [1] for generic SYK-like models. Specifically we find a Lyapunov regime inside an asymmetric butterfly cone, which are signatures of quantum chaos, and that the maximal velocity dependent Lyapunov exponent approaches the chaos bound 2π/β as the interaction strength approaches its physical upper bound. Finally, the model is integrable for (at least) N ≤ 6 but chaotic in the large N limit, leading us to conjecture that there is a transition from integrability to chaos as N increases past a critical value.

Solving Lévy Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Budhaditya Bhattacharjee, William. E. Salazar, Alexei Andreanov +1 more

We present an exact solution in the large-$N$ limit of the Lévy Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (LSYK) model introduced in Ref. [1], wherein the couplings are drawn from a Lévy Stable distribution parameterized by a tail exponent $μ\in [0, 2]$. Starting from the Hamiltonian and its associated partition function, we highlight the key differences from the standard Gaussian SYK model and derive the large-$N$ Schwinger-Dyson equations via a bosonic oscillator representation of the action. These equations are solved both numerically and analytically in the large-$q$ and infrared limits. We subsequently analyze the chaotic properties of the model by computing the Krylov exponent from the large-$q$ Green's function and extracting the Lyapunov exponent from the $4$-point function. The parameter $μ$ continuously interpolates between a free theory at $μ= 0$ and the conventional, maximally chaotic Gaussian SYK model at $μ= 2$, with non-maximal chaos persisting throughout the intermediate regime $0 < μ< 2$. Thermodynamic quantities, including the entropy, free energy, average energy, and specific heat capacity, are computed and compared with their Gaussian SYK counterparts. The interpretations of the thermodynamics are discussed with respect to the holographic dual and non-Fermi liquid theory. Finally, we discuss an alternative representation of the LSYK model based on a distinct decomposition of the Lévy Stable distribution, which establishes a non-trivial connection to Gaussian SYK, and provide supporting analytical and numerical results in the appendices.

Tunable Chaos in the Finite Mean SYK Model

Arkaprava Mukherjee, Sumilan Banerjee, Sandip P. Trivedi +1 more

The complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, featuring fermions with all-to-all interactions, serves as a dual paradigm for understanding non-Fermi liquid behavior and the holographic nature of charged black holes. Two defining characteristics of the standard SYK model are its maximal chaos (Lyapunov exponent $λ_{\mathrm{L}}=2πT$ at temperature $T$), and its finite zero-temperature residual entropy. While previous studies have largely focused on couplings drawn from a zero-mean Gaussian distribution, we investigate a generalized model with a finite mean-to-standard-deviation ratio, $g\equiv J_{0}/δJ$ of the coupling distribution in order to get deeper insight into the evolution of chaos. We find that increasing $g$ yields the following effects: (i) The system remains a fast scrambler with $λ_{\mathrm{L}}=A~T$, but with a suppressed coefficient $A<2π$. (ii) In the limit $g\to \infty$, out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs) no longer exhibit exponential growth with $λ_{\mathrm{L}}\simeq 0$. (iii) The spectral correlations indicative of late-time chaos maintain Wigner-Dyson level spacing statistics for all values of $g$. (iv) The system preserves a finite residual entropy, albeit with reduced magnitude, for all $g$ values. We conclude that in this generalized SYK model, there is a chaotic to non-chaotic crossover. Moreover different measures of chaos decouple, demonstrating that the presence of finite residual entropy does not strictly imply maximal chaos.

Thermodynamics and many body chaos for generalized large q SYK models

Jiaqi Jiang, Zhenbin Yang

Abstract This paper considers a type of generalized large q SYK models which include multi-body interactions between Majorana fermions. We derive an effective action in the limit of large N and large q (with $$ \frac{q^2}{N} $$ q 2 N small), and find a universal expression for thermody-namical quantities. We also consider the chaos exponent using the retarded kernel method and find an efficient way to calculate the Lyapunov exponent for generalized large q SYK models numerically.

State-dependent thermalization in SYK model

Tousik Samui, Nilakash Sorokhaibam

We show that the integrable state of charged SYK model does not thermalize even though the state has non-zero Lyapunov exponent. The chaotic state always thermalizes which is expected. So whether the system thermalizes or not depends on the initial state. We also show that the introduction of random mass deformation (q=2 SYK term) slows down thermalization but the system thermalizes exponentially fast. This is observed despite the fact that large (q=2) SYK interaction forces spectral statistics to obey Poisson statistics. This means that a precise measure of chaos and its prediction of thermalization is still lacking. In the chaotic state, the effective temperature is non-monotonic. It has a bump at relatively long time before settling down to the final value. With non-zero chemical potential, the effective temperature oscillates noticeably before settling down to the final value. The spectral asymmetry frequency does not change during quantum quenches.
