Organizing symmetry-protected topological phases by layering and symmetry reduction: A minimalist perspective

Abstract

It is demonstrated that fermionic/bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases across different dimensions and symmetry classes can be organized using geometric constructions that increase dimensions and symmetry-reduction maps that change symmetry groups. Specifically, it is shown that the interacting classifications of SPT phases with and without glide symmetry fit into a short exact sequence, so that the classification with glide is constrained to be a direct sum of cyclic groups of order 2 or 4. Applied to fermionic SPT phases in the Wigner-Dyson class AII, this implies that the complete interacting classification in the presence of glide is ${\mathbb{Z}}_{4}\ensuremath{\bigoplus}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ensuremath{\bigoplus}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ in three dimensions. In particular, the hourglass-fermion phase recently realized in the band insulator KHgSb must be robust to interactions. Generalizations to spatiotemporal glide symmetries are discussed.

Classification and surface anomaly of glide symmetry protected topological phases in three dimensions

Fuyan Lu, Bowen Shi, Yuan-Ming Lu

We study glide protected topological (GSPT) phases of interacting bosons and fermions in three spatial dimensions with certain on-site symmetries. They are crystalline SPT phases, which are distinguished from a trivial product state only in the presence of non-symmorphic glide symmetry. We classify these GSPT phases with various on-site symmetries such as U (1) and time reversal, and show that they can all be understood by stacking and coupling two-dimensional (2D) short-range-entangled phases in a glide-invariant way. Using such a coupled layer construction we study the anomalous surface topological orders of these GSPT phases, which gap out the 2D surface states without breaking any symmetries. While this framework can be applied to any non-symmorphic SPT phase, we demonstrate it in many examples of GSPT phases including the non-symmorphic topological insulator with ‘hourglass fermion’ surface states.

Symmetry-protected topological orders for interacting fermions: Fermionic topological nonlinear σ models and a special group supercohomology theory

Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Xiao-Gang Wen

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are gapped short-range-entangled quantum phases with a symmetry $G$, which can all be smoothly connected to the trivial product states if we break the symmetry. It has been shown that a large class of interacting bosonic SPT phases can be systematically described by group cohomology theory. In this paper, we introduce a (special) group supercohomology theory which is a generalization of the standard group cohomology theory. We show that a large class of short-range interacting fermionic SPT phases can be described by the group supercohomology theory. Using the data of supercocycles, we can obtain the ideal ground state wave function for the corresponding fermionic SPT phase. We can also obtain the bulk Hamiltonian that realizes the SPT phase, as well as the anomalous (i.e., non-onsite) symmetry for the boundary effective Hamiltonian. The anomalous symmetry on the boundary implies that the symmetric boundary must be gapless for (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] boundary, and must be gapless or topologically ordered beyond (1+1)D. As an application of this general result, we construct a new SPT phase in three dimensions, for interacting fermionic superconductors with coplanar spin order (which have ${T}^{2}=1$ time-reversal ${Z}_{2}^{T}$ and fermion-number-parity ${Z}_{2}^{f}$ symmetries described by a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}^{T}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$). Such a fermionic SPT state can neither be realized by free fermions nor by interacting bosons (formed by fermion pairs), and thus are not included in the $K$-theory classification for free fermions or group cohomology description for interacting bosons. We also construct three interacting fermionic SPT phases in two dimensions (2D) with a full symmetry group ${Z}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{Z}_{2}^{f}$. Those 2D fermionic SPT phases all have central-charge $c=1$ gapless edge excitations, if the symmetry is not broken.

Construction and classification of point-group symmetry-protected topological phases in two-dimensional interacting fermionic systems

Jian-Hao Zhang, Qing-Rui Wang, Shuo Yang +2 more

The construction and classification of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in interacting bosonic and fermionic systems have been intensively studied in the past few years. Very recently, a complete classification and construction of space-group SPT phases were also proposed for interacting bosonic systems. In this Rapid Communication, we attempt to generalize this classification and construction scheme systematically into interacting fermion systems. In particular, we construct and classify point-group SPT phases for two-dimensional (2D) interacting fermion systems via lower-dimensional block-state decorations. We discover several intriguing fermionic SPT states that can only be realized in interacting fermion systems (i.e., not in free-fermion or bosonic SPT systems). Moreover, we also verify the recently conjectured crystalline equivalence principle for 2D interacting fermion systems. Finally, the potential experimental realization of these different classes of point-group SPT phases in 2D correlated superconductors is addressed.

Rotation symmetry-protected topological phases of fermions

Meng Cheng, Chenjie Wang

We study the classification of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with both rotation symmetry and Abelian internal symmetries in one, two, and three dimensions. By working out this classification, on the one hand, we demonstrate the recently proposed correspondence principle between crystalline topological phases and those with internal symmetries through explicit block-state constructions. We find that for the precise correspondence to hold it is necessary to change the central extension structure of the symmetry group by the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ fermion parity. On the other hand, we uncover new classes of intrinsically fermionic SPT phases that are only enabled by interactions, both in 2D and 3D. Several 3D Majorana-type fermionic SPT phases are identified. Moreover, several new instances of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type theorems for Majorana-type fermionic SPT phases are obtained and we discuss their interpretations from the perspective of bulk-boundary correspondence.

Minimalist approach to the classification of symmetry protected topological phases

Charles Zhaoxi Xiong

Abstract A number of proposals with differing predictions (e.g. Borel group cohomology, oriented cobordism, group supercohomology, spin cobordism, etc) have been made for the classification of symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases. Here we treat various proposals on an equal footing and present rigorous, general results that are independent of which proposal is correct. We do so by formulating a minimalist generalized cohomology hypothesis, which is satisfied by existing proposals and captures essential aspects of SPT classification. From this hypothesis alone, formulas relating classifications in different dimensions and/or protected by different symmetry groups are derived. Our formalism is expected to work for fermionic as well as bosonic phases, Floquet as well as stationary phases, and spatial as well as on-site symmetries. As an application, we predict that the complete classification of 3D bosonic SPT phases with space group symmetry G is , where the H 1 term classifies phases beyond the Borel group cohomology proposal.

Symmetry-Protected Topological Orders in Interacting Bosonic Systems

Xie Chen, Zheng‐Cheng Gu, Zheng-Xin Liu +1 more

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are bulk-gapped quantum phases with symmetries, which have gapless or degenerate boundary states as long as the symmetries are not broken. The SPT phases in free fermion systems, such as topological insulators, can be classified; however, it is not known what SPT phases exist in general interacting systems. We present a systematic way to construct SPT phases in interacting bosonic systems. Just as group theory allows us to construct 230 crystal structures in three-dimensional space, we use group cohomology theory to systematically construct different interacting bosonic SPT phases in any dimension and with any symmetry, leading to the discovery of bosonic topological insulators and superconductors.
