The Poincaré Half-Plane for Informationally-Complete POVMs

Abstract

It has been shown in previous papers that classes of (minimal asymmetric) informationally-complete positive operator valued measures (IC-POVMs) in dimension d can be built using the multiparticle Pauli group acting on appropriate fiducial states. The latter states may also be derived starting from the Poincaré upper half-plane model H . To do this, one translates the congruence (or non-congruence) subgroups of index d of the modular group into groups of permutation gates, some of the eigenstates of which are the sought fiducials. The structure of some IC-POVMs is found to be intimately related to the Kochen–Specker theorem.

Magic informationally complete POVMs with permutations

Michel R. P. Planat, Z. Gedik

Eigenstates of permutation gates are either stabilizer states (for gates in the Pauli group) or magic states, thus allowing universal quantum computation (Planat, Rukhsan-Ul-Haq 2017 Adv. Math. Phys. 2017, 5287862 (doi:10.1155/2017/5287862)). We show in this paper that a subset of such magic states, when acting on the generalized Pauli group, define (asymmetric) informationally complete POVMs. Such informationally complete POVMs, investigated in dimensions 2-12, exhibit simple finite geometries in their projector products and, for dimensions 4 and 8 and 9, relate to two-qubit, three-qubit and two-qutrit contextuality.

On SIC-POVMs in prime dimensions

Steven T. Flammia

The generalized Pauli group and its normalizer, the Clifford group, have a rich mathematical structure which is relevant to the problem of constructing symmetric informationally complete POVMs (SIC-POVMs). To date, almost every known SIC-POVM fiducial vector is an eigenstate of a ‘canonical’ unitary in the Clifford group. I show that every canonical unitary in prime dimensions p > 3 lies in the same conjugacy class of the Clifford group and give a class representative for all such dimensions. It follows that if even one such SIC-POVM fiducial vector is an eigenvector of such a unitary, then all of them are (for a given such dimension). I also conjecture that in all dimensions d , the number of conjugacy classes is bounded above by 3 and depends only on d mod9, and I support this claim with computer computations in all dimensions <48.

Symmetric informationally complete–positive operator valued measures and the extended Clifford group

D. M. Appleby

We describe the structure of the extended Clifford group [defined to be the group consisting of all operators, unitary and antiunitary, which normalize the generalized Pauli group (or Weyl–Heisenberg group as it is often called)]. We also obtain a number of results concerning the structure of the Clifford group proper (i.e., the group consisting just of the unitary operators which normalize the generalized Pauli group). We then investigate the action of the extended Clifford group operators on symmetric informationally complete–positive operator valued measures (or SIC–POVMs) covariant relative to the action of the generalized Pauli group. We show that each of the fiducial vectors which has been constructed so far (including all the vectors constructed numerically by Renes et al.) is an eigenvector of one of a special class of order 3 Clifford unitaries. This suggests a strengthening of a conjecture of Zauner’s. We give a complete characterization of the orbits and stability groups in dimensions 2–7. Finally, we show that the problem of constructing fiducial vectors may be expected to simplify in the infinite sequence of dimensions 7,13,19,21,31,… . We illustrate this point by constructing exact expressions for fiducial vectors in dimensions 7 and 19.

Quantum computing thanks to Bianchi groups

Michel R. P. Planat

It has been shown that the concept of a magic state (in universal quantum computing: uqc) and that of a minimal informationally completepositive operator valued measure: MIC-POVMs (in quantum measurements) are in good agreement when such a magic state is selected in the set of nonstabilizer eigenstates of permutation gates with the Pauli group acting on it [1].Further work observed that most found low-dimensional MICs may be built from subgroups of the modular group PS L(2, Z) [2] and that this can be understood from the picture of the trefoil knot and related 3-manifolds [3]. Here one concentrates on Bianchi groups PS L(2,Od) (with Od the integer ring over the imaginary quadratic field) whose torsion-free subgroups define the appropriate knots and links leading to MICs and the related uqc. One finds a chain of Bianchi congruence n-cusped links playing a significant role [4].
