Abstract

We use a slave-rotor approach within a mean-field theory to study the competition of metallic, Mott-insulating, and superconducting phases of spin-3/2 fermions subjected to a periodic optical lattice potential. In addition to the metallic, the Mott-insulating, and the superconducting phases that are associated with the gauge symmetry breaking of the spinon field, we identify an emerging superconducting phase that breaks both roton and spinon field gauge symmetries. This superconducting phase emerges as a result of the competition between spin-0 singlet and spin-2 quintet interaction channels naturally available for spin-3/2 systems. The two superconducting phases can be distinguished from each other by quasiparticle weight. We further discuss the properties of these phases for both two-dimensional square and three-dimensional cubic lattices at zero and finite temperatures.

Mott insulating states and their quantum phase transitions of interacting spin-3/2 ultracold fermionic atoms on optical lattices

GuangMing ZHANG, Hong-Hao Tu

We first introduce the ultracold atoms and the optical lattices. Then, we analyze various Mott insulating phases of interacting spin-3=2 fermionic ultracold atoms in two-dimensional square optical lattices. Using a generalized Hubbard model, we identify two distinct symmetry breaking phases: the spin-quadrupole ordering phase and the spin-dipole-spin-octupole ordering phase. Near the SU(4) symmetric point, we find that an algebraic spin liquid phase may emerge due to strong quantum fluctuations. Finally, the possible quantum phase transitions between these exotic phases are also discussed.

Mott insulating phases and quantum phase transitions of interacting spin- 32 fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices at half filling

Hong-Hao Tu, Guang-Ming Zhang, Lu Yu

We study various Mott insulating phases of interacting spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ fermionic ultracold atoms in two-dimensional square optical lattices at half filling. Using a generalized one-band Hubbard model with hidden SO(5) symmetry, we identify two distinct symmetry breaking phases: the degenerate antiferromagnetic spin-dipole--spin-octupole ordering and spin-quadrupole ordering, depending on the sign of the spin-dependent interaction. These two competing orders exhibit very different symmetry properties, low energy excitations, and topological characterizations. Near the SU(4) symmetric point, a quantum critical state with a $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase may emerge due to strong quantum fluctuations, leading to spin algebraic correlations and gapless excitations.

Bose-Fermi mixtures in an optical lattice

K. Sengupta, N. Dupuis, Pinaki Majumdar

We study an atomic Bose-Fermi mixture with unpolarized fermions in an optical lattice. We obtain the Mott ground states of such a system in the limit of the deep optical lattice and discuss the effect of quantum fluctuations on these states. We also study the superfluid-insulator transitions of bosons and metal-insulator transition of fermions in such a mixture within a slave-rotor mean-field approximation, and obtain the corresponding phase diagram. We discuss experimental implications of our results.

Magnetism of spinor alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms in optical lattices

Hui Tan, Jinsen Han, Jianmin Yuan +1 more

We theoretically investigate zero-temperature magnetic ordering of mixtures of spin-1 (alkali-metal atoms) and spin-0 (alkaline-earth-metal atoms) bosons in a three-dimensional optical lattice. With the single-mode approximation for the spin-1 bosons, we obtain an effective Bose-Hubbard model for describing the heteronuclear mixtures in optical lattices. By controlling the interspecies interactions between alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms, we map out complete phase diagrams of the system with both positive and negative spin-dependent interactions for spin-1 atoms, based on bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the spin-1 components feature ferromagnetic and nematic insulating phases, in addition to the superfluid, depending on spin-dependent interactions. Take the spin-1 alkali-metal bosons as spin $\ensuremath{\uparrow}$, and spin-0 alkaline-earth-metal bosons as spin $\ensuremath{\downarrow}$, we observe that the system favors ferromagnetic insulator at filling $n=1$ and unorder insulator at $n=2$. Interestingly, we observe a two-step Mott-insulating-superfluid phase transition, as a result of mass imbalance between alkali-metal and alkaline-earth-metal atoms.

Superfluid phases of spin-1 bosons in a cubic optical lattice

Mohamed Mobarak, Axel Pelster

We analyze theoretically the emergence of different superfluid phases of spin-1 bosons in a three-dimensional cubic optical lattice by generalizing the recently developed Ginzburg–Landau theory for the Bose–Hubbard model to a spinor Bose gas. In particular at zero temperature, our theory distinguishes within its validity range between various superfluid phases for an anti-ferromagnetic interaction with an external magnetic field. In addition, we determine that the superfluid–Mott insulator phase transition is of second order and that the transitions between the respective superfluid phases with anti-ferromagnetic interaction can be both of first and second order.

Emergence of unconventional phases in quantum spin systems

Jean-Sébastien Bernier

In this thesis, we investigate strongly correlated phenomena in quantum spin systems. In the first part of this work, we study geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets (AFMs). Generalizing the SU(2) Heisenberg Hamiltonian to Sp(N) symmetry, we obtain, in the large-N limit, the mean-field phase diagrams for the planar pyrochlore and cubic AFMs. We then use gauge theories to consider fluctuation effects about their respective mean-field configurations. We find, in addition to conventional Neel states, a plethora of novel magnetically disordered phases: two kinds of spin liquids, Z2 in 2+1D and U(1)in 3+1D, and several valence bond solids such as two and three-dimensional plaquette and columnar singlet states. We use the same approach to study the diamond lattice AFM which possesses extended classical ground state degeneracy. We demonstrate that quantum and entropic fluctuations lift this degeneracy in different ways. In the second part of the thesis, we study ultracold spinor atoms confined in optical lattices. We first demonstrate the feasibility of experimental realization of rotor models using ultracold spin-one Bose atoms in a spin-dependent and disordered optical lattice. We show that the ground state of such disordered rotor models with quadrupolar interactions can exhibit biaxial nematic ordering in the disorder-averaged sense, and suggest an imaging experiment to detect the biaxial nematicity in such systems. Finally, using variational wavefunction methods, we study the Mott phases and superfluid-insulator transition of spin-three bosons in an optical lattice with an anisotropic two dimensional optical trap. We chart out the phase diagrams for Mott states with n = 1 and n = 2 atoms per lattice site. We show that the long-range dipolar interaction stabilizes a state characterized by antiferromagnetic chains made of ferromagnetically aligned spins. We also obtain the mean-field phase boundary for the superfluid-insulator transition, and show that inside the superfluid phase and near the superfluid-insulator phase boundary, the system undergoes a first order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic spin ordering transition.
