Abstract

In this Rapid Communication, we show that low-energy macroscopic properties of the one-dimensional (1D) attractive Hubbard model exhibit two fluids of bound pairs and of unpaired fermions. Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of the model, we first determine the low-temperature phase diagram and analytically calculate the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing correlation function for the partially polarized phase. We then show that for such an FFLO-like state in the low-density regime the effective chemical potentials of bound pairs and unpaired fermions behave like two free fluids. Consequently, the susceptibility, compressibility, and specific heat obey simple additivity rules, indicating the ``free'' particle nature of interacting fermions on a 1D lattice. In contrast to the continuum Fermi gases, the correlation critical exponents and thermodynamics of the attractive Hubbard model essentially depend on two lattice interacting parameters. Finally, we study scaling functions, the Wilson ratio and susceptibility, which provide universal macroscopic properties and dimensionless constants of interacting fermions at low energy.

Universal thermodynamics of the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Song Cheng, Yi-Cong Yu, Murray T. Batchelor +1 more

The one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model, describing electrons on a lattice with an on-site repulsive interaction, provides a paradigm for the physics of quantum many-body phenomena. Here, by solving the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, we study the universal thermodynamics, quantum criticality, and magnetism of the 1D attractive Hubbard model. We show that the compressibility and the susceptibility of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-like state obey simple additivity rules at low temperatures, indicating an existence of two free quantum fluids. The magnetic properties, such as magnetization and susceptibility, reveal three physical regions: quantum fluids at low temperatures, a non-Fermi liquid at high temperatures, and the quantum fluid to non-Fermi liquid crossover in between. The lattice interaction is seen to significantly influence the nature of the FFLO-like state in 1D. Furthermore, we show that the dimensionless Wilson ratio provides an ideal parameter to map out the various phase boundaries and to characterize the two free fluids of the FLLO-like state. The quantum scaling functions for the thermal and magnetic properties yield the same dynamic critical exponent $z=2$ and correlation critical exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ in the quantum critical region whenever a phase transition occurs. Our results provide a rigorous understanding of quantum criticality and free fluids of many-body systems on a 1D lattice.

Asymptotic correlation functions and FFLO signature for the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Song Cheng, Yuzhu Jiang, Yi-Cong Yu +2 more

We study the long-distance asymptotic behavior of various correlation functions for the one-dimensional (1D) attractive Hubbard model in a partially polarized phase through the Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory approaches. We particularly find the oscillating behavior of these correlation functions with spatial power-law decay, of which the pair (spin) correlation function oscillates with a frequency ΔkF (2ΔkF). Here ΔkF=π(n↑−n↓) is the mismatch in the Fermi surfaces of spin-up and spin-down particles. Consequently, the pair correlation function in momentum space has peaks at the mismatch k=ΔkF, which has been observed in recent numerical work on this model. These singular peaks in momentum space together with the spatial oscillation suggest an analog of the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in the 1D Hubbard model. The parameter β representing the lattice effect becomes prominent in critical exponents which determine the power-law decay of all correlation functions. We point out that the backscattering of unpaired fermions and bound pairs within their own Fermi points gives a microscopic origin of the FFLO pairing in 1D.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model and its fingerprint in spatial noise correlations

Andreas Lüscher, R. M. Noack, Andreas Martin Läuchli

We explore the pairing properties of the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model in the presence of finite spin polarization. The correlation exponents for the most important fluctuations are determined as a function of the density and the polarization. We find that in a system with spin population imbalance, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)-type pairing at wave vector $Q=\ensuremath{\mid}{k}_{F,\ensuremath{\uparrow}}\ensuremath{-}{k}_{F,\ensuremath{\downarrow}}\ensuremath{\mid}$ is always dominant and there is no Chandrasekhar-Clogston limit. We then investigate the case of weakly coupled one-dimensional (1D) systems and determine the region of stability of the 1D FFLO phase. This picture is corroborated by density-matrix-renormalization-group simulations of the spatial noise correlations in uniform and trapped systems, unambiguously revealing the presence of fermion pairs with nonzero momentum $Q$. This opens up an interesting possibility for experimental studies of FFLO states.

Trapped imbalanced fermionic superfluids in one dimension: A variational approach

Kelly R. Patton, Dominique Gautreau, Stephen Kudla +1 more

We propose and analyze a variational wave function for a population-imbalanced one-dimensional Fermi gas that allows for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) type pairing correlations among the two fermion species, while also accounting for the harmonic confining potential. In the strongly interacting regime, we find large spatial oscillations of the order parameter, indicative of an FFLO state. The obtained density profiles versus imbalance are consistent with recent experimental results as well as with theoretical calculations based on combining Bethe ansatz with the local density approximation. Our variational wave function displays no signature of the FFLO state in the densities of the two fermion species. Nonetheless, the oscillations of the order parameter appear in density-density correlations, both in situ and after free expansion. Furthermore, above a critical polarization, the value of which depends on the interaction, we find the unpaired Fermi-gas state to be energetically more favorable.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing in one-dimensional optical lattices

Matteo Rizzi, Marco Polini, Miguel A. Cazalilla +3 more

Spin-polarized attractive Fermi gases in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices are expected to be remarkably good candidates for the observation of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We model these systems with an attractive Hubbard model with population imbalance. By means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we compute the pairing correlations as well as the static spin and charge structure factors in the whole range from weak to strong coupling. We demonstrate that pairing correlations exhibit quasi-long-range order and oscillations at the wave number expected from the FFLO theory. However, we also show by numerically computing the mixed spin-charge static structure factor that charge and spin degrees of freedom appear to be coupled already for a small imbalance. We discuss the consequences of this coupling for the observation of the FFLO phase, as well as for the stabilization of the quasi-long-range order into long-range order by coupling many identical 1D systems, such as in quasi-1D optical lattices.

Pairing states of a polarized Fermi gas trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Adrian E. Feiguin, Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner

We study the properties of a one-dimensional (1D) gas of fermions trapped in a lattice by means of the density matrix renormalization group method, focusing on the case of unequal spin populations, and strong attractive interaction. In the low-density regime, the system phase separates into a well-defined superconducting core and a fully polarized metallic cloud surrounding it. We argue that the superconducting phase corresponds to a 1D analog of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, with a quasicondensate of tightly bound bosonic pairs with a finite center-of-mass momentum that scales linearly with the magnetization. In the large density limit, the system allows for four phases: in the core, we either find a Fock state of localized pairs or a metallic shell with free spin-down fermions moving in a fully filled background of spin-up fermions. As the magnetization increases, the Fock state disappears to give room for a metallic phase, with a partially polarized superconducting FFLO shell and a fully polarized metallic cloud surrounding the core.
