Front dynamics and entanglement in the XXZ chain with a gradient

Abstract

We consider the XXZ spin chain with a magnetic field gradient and study the profiles of the magnetization as well as the entanglement entropy. For a slowly varying field, it is shown that, by means of a local density approximation, the ground-state magnetization profile can be obtained with standard Bethe ansatz techniques. Furthermore, it is argued that the low-energy description of the theory is given by a Luttinger liquid with slowly varying parameters. This allows us to obtain a very good approximation of the entanglement profile using a recently introduced technique of conformal field theory in curved spacetime. Finally, the front dynamics is also studied after the gradient field has been switched off, following arguments of generalized hydrodynamics for integrable systems. While for the XX chain the hydrodynamic solution can be found analytically, the XXZ case appears to be more complicated and the magnetization profiles are recovered only around the edge of the front via an approximate numerical solution.

Magnetization and entanglement after a geometric quench in the XXZ chain

Matthias Gruber, Viktor Eisler

We investigate the dynamics of the XXZ spin chain after a geometric quench, which is realized by connecting two half chains prepared in their ground states with zero and maximum magnetizations, respectively. The profiles of magnetization after the subsequent time evolution are studied numerically by density-matrix renormalization group methods, and a comparison to the predictions of generalized hydrodynamics yields a very good agreement. We also calculate the profiles of entanglement entropy and propose an ansatz for the noninteracting XX case, based on arguments from conformal field theory. In the general interacting case, the propagation of the entropy front is studied numerically both before and after the reflection from the chain boundaries. Finally, our results for the magnetization fluctuations indicate a leading order proportionality relation to the entanglement entropy.

Nonequilibrium steady states in the quantum XXZ spin chain

Thiago Sabetta, Grégoire Misguich

We investigate the real-time dynamics of a critical spin-1/2 chain (XXZ model) prepared in an inhomogeneous initial state with different magnetizations on the left and right halves. Using the time-evolving block decimation method, we follow the front propagation by measuring the magnetization and entanglement entropy profiles. At long times, as in the free fermion case [Antal et al., Phys. Rev. E 59, 4912 (1999)], a large central region develops where correlations become time independent and translation invariant. The shape and speed of the fronts is studied numerically and we evaluate the stationary current as a function of initial magnetic field and as a function of the anisotropy $\ensuremath{\Delta}$. We compare the results with the conductance of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and with the exact free-fermion solution at $\ensuremath{\Delta}=0$. We also investigate the two-point correlations in the stationary region and find a good agreement with the ``twisted'' form obtained by Lancaster and Mitra [Phys. Rev. E 81, 061134 (2010)] using bosonization. Some deviations are nevertheless observed for strong currents.

Entanglement spreading after local fermionic excitations in the XXZ chain

Matthias Gruber, Viktor Eisler

We study the spreading of entanglement produced by the time evolution of a local fermionic excitation created above the ground state of the XXZ chain. The resulting entropy profiles are investigated via density-matrix renormalization group calculations, and compared to a quasiparticle ansatz. In particular, we assume that the entanglement is dominantly carried by spinon excitations traveling at different velocities, and the entropy profile is reproduced by a probabilistic expression involving the density fraction of the spinons reaching the subsystem. The ansatz works well in the gapless phase for moderate values of the XXZ anisotropy, eventually deteriorating as other types of quasiparticle excitations gain spectral weight. Furthermore, if the initial state is excited by a local Majorana fermion, we observe a nontrivial rescaling of the entropy profiles. This effect is further investigated in a conformal field theory framework, carrying out calculations for the Luttinger liquid theory. Finally, we also consider excitations creating an antiferromagnetic domain wall in the gapped phase of the chain, and find again a modified quasiparticle ansatz with a multiplicative factor.

Dynamical correlations of S=1/2 quantum spin chains

Rodrigo G. Pereira

Spin-1/2 chains demonstrate some of the striking effects of interactions and quantum fluctuations in one-dimensional systems. The XXZ model has been used to study the unusual properties of anisotropic spin chains in an external magnetic field. The zero temperature phase diagram for this model exhibits a critical or quasi-long-range-ordered phase which is a realization of a Luttinger liquid. While many static properties of spin-1/2 chains have been explained by combinations of analytical techniques such as bosonization and Bethe ansatz, the standard approach fails in the calculation of some time-dependent correlation functions. I present a study of the longitudinal dynamical structure factor for the XXZ model in the critical regime. I show that an approximation for the line shape of the dynamical structure factor in the limit of small momentum transfer can be obtained by going beyond the Luttinger model and treating irrelevant operators associated with band curvature effects. This approach is able to describe the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail at finite magnetic field. Integrability is shown to affect the low-energy effective model at zero field, with consequences for the line shape. The power-law singularities at the thresholds of the particle-hole continuum are investigated using an analogy with the X-ray edge problem. Using methods of Bethe ansatz and conformal field theory, I compute the exact exponents for the edge singularities of the dynamical structure factor. The same methods are used to study the long-time asymptotic behavior of the spin self-correlation function, which is shown to be dominated by a high-energy excitation.

Scaling of fronts and entanglement spreading during a domain wall melting

Stefano Scopa, Dragi Karevski

Abstract We revisit the out-of-equilibrium physics arising during the unitary evolution of a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain initially prepared in a domain wall state $$\vert \psi _0\rangle =\vert \dots \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \dots \rangle$$ | ψ 0 ⟩ = | ⋯ ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ⋯ ⟩ . In absence of interactions, we review the exact lattice calculation of several conserved quantities, including e.g. the magnetization and the spin current profiles. At large distances x and times t, we show how these quantities allow for a ballistic scaling behavior in terms of the scaling variable $$\zeta = x/t$$ ζ = x / t , with exactly computable scaling functions. In such a limit of large space-time scales, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the system is suitably captured by the local occupation function of spinless fermionic modes, whose semi-classical evolution in phase space is given by a Euler hydrodynamic equation. Similarly, analytical results for the asymptotic fronts dynamics are obtained for the interacting chain via Generalized Hydrodynamics. In the last part of the work, we include large-scale quantum fluctuations on top of the semi-classical hydrodynamic background in the form of a conformal field theory that lives along the evolving Fermi contour. With this procedure, dubbed quantum generalized hydrodynamics, it is possible to obtain exact asymptotic results for the entanglement spreading during the melting dynamics.

Entanglement entropies of inhomogeneous Luttinger liquids

Alvise Bastianello, Jérôme Dubail, Jean-Marie Stéphan

Abstract We develop a general framework to compute the scaling of entanglement entropy in inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems belonging to the Luttinger liquid universality class. While much insight has been gained in homogeneous systems by making use of conformal field theory techniques, our focus is on systems for which the Luttinger parameter K depends on position, and conformal invariance is broken. An important point of our analysis is that contributions stemming from the UV cutoff have to be treated very carefully, since they now depend on position. We show that such terms can be removed either by considering regularized entropies specifically designed to do so, or by tabulating numerically the cutoff, and reconstructing its contribution to the entropy through the local density approximation. We check our method numerically in the spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain in a spatially varying magnetic field, and find excellent agreement.
