Contrary to the original expectation,
Na2IrO3 is not a Kitaev's quantum spin liquid (QSL) but shows a zigzag-type antiferromagnetic order in experiments. Here, we propose experimental clues and criteria to measure how a material in hand is close to the Kitaev's QSL state. For this purpose, we systematically study thermal and spin excitations of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model studied by Chaloupka et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 097204 (2013) and an effective ab initio Hamiltonian for
Na2IrO3 proposed by Yamaji et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 107201 (2014), by employing a numerical diagonalization method. We reveal that closeness to the Kitaev's QSL is characterized by the following properties, besides trivial criteria such as reduction of magnetic ordered moments and N\'eel temperatures. (1) Two peaks in the temperature dependence of specific heat at ${T}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}$ and
Th caused by the fractionalization of spin to two types of Majorana fermions. (2) In between the double peak, a prominent plateau or shoulder pinned at
2Rln2 in the temperature dependence of entropy, where
R is the gas constant. (3) Failure of the linear spin wave approximation at the low-lying excitations of dynamical structure factors. (4) Small ratio ${T}_{\ensuremath{\ell}}/{T}_{h}$ close to or less than 0.03. According to the proposed criteria,
Na2IrO3 is categorized to a compound close to the Kitaev's QSL, and is proven to be a promising candidate for the realization of the QSL if the relevant material parameters can further be tuned by making thin film of
Na2IrO3 on various substrates or applying axial pressure perpendicular to the honeycomb networks of iridium ions. Applications of these characterization to ${({\mathrm{Na}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Li}}_{x})}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$ and other related materials are also discussed.
An effective low-energy Hamiltonian of itinerant electrons for iridium oxide Na2IrO3 is derived by an ab initio downfolding scheme. The model is then reduced to an effective spin model on a honeycomb lattice by the strong coupling expansion. Here we show that the ab initio model contains spin-spin anisotropic exchange terms in addition to the extensively studied Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions, and allows us to describe the experimentally observed zigzag magnetic order, interpreted as the state stabilized by the antiferromagnetic coupling of the ferromagnetic chains. We clarify possible routes to realize quantum spin liquids from existing Na2IrO3.
The recently discovered three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb iridate, β -Li 2 IrO 3 , has raised hopes for the realization of the dominant Kitaev interaction between spin-orbit entangled local moments due to its near-ideal lattice structure. If true, this material may lie close to the sought-after quantum spin-liquid phase in three dimensions. Utilizing ab initio electronic structure calculations, we first show that the spin-orbit entangled basis, , correctly captures the low-energy electronic structure. The effective spin model derived in the strong-coupling limit supplemented by the ab initio results is shown to be dominated by the Kitaev interaction. We demonstrated that the possible range of parameters is consistent with a non-coplanar spiral magnetic order found in a recent experiment. All of these analyses suggest that β -Li 2 IrO 3 may be the closest among known materials to the Kitaev spin-liquid regime.
We explore the phase diagram of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model with nearest neighbor interactions on the honeycomb lattice using the exact diagonalization of finite systems combined with the cluster mean field approximation, and supplemented by the insights from analytic approaches: the linear spin-wave and second-order perturbation theories. This study confirms that by varying the balance between the Heisenberg and Kitaev term, frustrated exchange interactions stabilize in this model either one of four phases with magnetic long range order: N\'eel phase, ferromagnetic phase, and two other phases with coexisting antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic bonds, zigzag and stripy phase, or one of two distinct spin-liquid phases. Out of these latter disordered phases, the one with ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions has a substantially broader range of stability as the neighboring competing ordered phases, ferromagnetic and stripy, have very weak quantum fluctuations. Focusing on the quantum spin-liquid phases, we study spatial spin correlations and dynamic spin structure factor of the model by the exact diagonalization technique, and discuss the evolution of gapped low-energy spin response across the quantum phase transitions between the disordered spin liquid and phases with long range magnetic order.
Abstract Large anisotropic exchange in 5 d and 4 d oxides and halides open the door to new types of magnetic ground states and excitations, inconceivable a decade ago. A prominent case is the Kitaev spin liquid, host of remarkable properties such as protection of quantum information and the emergence of Majorana fermions. Here we discuss the promise for spin-liquid behavior in the 4 d 5 honeycomb halide α -RuCl 3 . From advanced electronic-structure calculations, we find that the Kitaev interaction is ferromagnetic, as in 5 d 5 iridium honeycomb oxides, and indeed defines the largest superexchange energy scale. A ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling is also supported by a detailed analysis of the field-dependent magnetization. Using exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group techniques for extended Kitaev-Heisenberg spin Hamiltonians, we find indications for a transition from zigzag order to a gapped spin liquid when applying magnetic field. Our results offer a unified picture on recent magnetic and spectroscopic measurements on this material and open new perspectives on the prospect of realizing quantum spin liquids in d 5 halides and oxides in general.
We calculate dynamical spin structure factors (DSFs) of three ab-initio models and one ab-initio-guided model for a honeycomb-lattice magnet
α-RuCl
3 with an exact numerical diagonalization method. We also calculate temperature dependences of the heat capacity, the nearest-neighbor (NN) spin-spin correlation function, and the static spin structure factor by employing thermal pure quantum states. From the obtained results for the four effective models, we find that, even when the magnetic order appears at a low temperature, the intensity at the
Γ point in the DSFs grows as the NN spin correlation grows. In addition, we find that the four models fail in explaining the features of both the inelastic-neutron-scattering experiments and the heat capacity measurements. In the four models, when temperature decreases, the heat capacity shows a prominent peak at a high temperature where the nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlation function grows. However, the peak temperatures in the heat capacity are too low in comparison with the observed values in the experiments. Thus, we propose an effective model with the strong ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling. We show that the proposed model quantitatively reproduces the above two experimental features. To discuss the further adequacy of the proposed model, we calculate the field dependence of the polarized terahertz spectra. We find that the proposed model successfully reproduces the experimental results: the spin-gapped excitation surviving up to an onset field where the magnetic order disappears and the almost linear response in the high field region. From the obtained numerical results, we argue that the feature of the low-energy magnetic excitation in
α-RuCl
3 is mainly characterized by the other interactions rather than the most dominant Kitaev interactions such as the off-diagonal interactions on the nearest-neighbor pairs.
