Abstract

We propose two experimental schemes for producing coherent-state superpositions which approximate different nonclassical states conditionally in traveling optical fields. Although these setups are constructed of a small number of linear optical elements and homodyne measurements, they can be used to generate various photon number superpositions in which the number of constituent states can be higher than the number of measurements in the schemes. We determine numerically the parameters to achieve maximal fidelity of the preparation for a large variety of nonclassical states, such as amplitude squeezed states, binomial states, squeezed cat states, and various photon number superpositions. The proposed setups can generate these states with high fidelities and with success probabilities that can be sufficient for practical applications.

Single-step quantum state engineering in traveling optical fields

We propose an experimental quantum state engineering scheme for the high-fidelity conditional generation of various nonclassical states of practical relevance in traveling optical fields. It contains a single measurement, thereby achieving a high success probability. The generated state is encoded in the optimal choice of the physically controllable parameters of the arrangement. These parameter values are determined via numerical optimization.

Generation of displaced squeezed superpositions of coherent states

Sergey A. Podoshvedov

We study the method of generation of states that approximate superpositions of large-amplitude coherent states (SCSs) with high fidelity in free-traveling fields. Our approach is based on the representation of an arbitrary single-mode pure state, and SCSs in particular, in terms of displaced number states with an arbitrary displacement amplitude. The proposed optical scheme is based on alternation of photon additions and displacement operators (in the general case, N photon additions and N − 1 displacements are required) with a seed coherent state to generate both even and odd displaced squeezed SCSs regardless of the parity of the used photon additions. It is shown that the optical scheme studied is sensitive to the seed coherent state if the other parameters are unchanged. Output states can approximate either even squeezed SCS or odd SCS shifted relative to each other by some value. This allows constructing a local rotation operator, in particular, the Hadamard gate, which is a mainframe element for quantum computation with coherent states. We also show that three-photon additions with two intermediate displacement operators are sufficient to generate even displaced squeezed SCS with the amplitude 1.7 and fidelity more than 0.99. The effects deteriorating the quality of output states are considered.

Production of superpositions of coherent states in traveling optical fields with inefficient photon detection

Hyunseok Jeong, Austin P. Lund, Timothy C. Ralph

We develop an all-optical scheme to generate superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable coherent states in traveling optical fields. It nondeterministically distills coherent-state superpositions (CSS's) with large amplitudes out of CSS's with small amplitudes using inefficient photon detection. The small CSS's required to produce CSS's with larger amplitudes are extremely well approximated by squeezed single photons. We discuss some remarkable features of this scheme: it effectively purifies mixed initial states emitted from inefficient single-photon sources and boosts negativity of Wigner functions of quantum states.

Conditional preparation of arbitrary superpositions of atomic Dicke states

Karel Lemr, Jaromı́r Fiurášek

We propose an experimentally accessible procedure for conditional preparation of highly nonclassical states of collective spin of an atomic ensemble. The quantum state engineering is based on a combination of quantum nondemolition interaction between atoms and light previously prepared in a non-Gaussian state using photon subtraction from squeezed vacuum beam, homodyne detection on the output light beam, and a coherent displacement of atomic state. The procedure is capable of nondeterministic preparation of a wide class of superpositions of atomic Dicke states. We present several techniques to optimize the performance of the protocol and maximize the trade off between fidelity of prepared state and success probability of the scheme.

Transforming squeezed light into a large-amplitude coherent-state superposition

Anne E. B. Nielsen, Klaus Mølmer

A quantum superposition of two coherent states of light with small amplitude can be obtained by subtracting a photon from a squeezed vacuum state. In experiments this preparation can be made conditioned on the detection of a photon in the field from a squeezed light source. We propose and analyze an extended measurement strategy which allows generation of high fidelity coherent state superpositions with larger amplitude.

Generating “squeezed” superpositions of coherent states using photon addition and subtraction

Petr Marek, Hyunseok Jeong, M. S. Kim

We study how photon addition and subtraction can be used to generate squeezed superpositions of coherent states (SSCSs) in free-traveling fields with high fidelities and large amplitudes. It is shown that an arbitrary $N$-photon subtraction results in the generation of a SSCS with nearly the perfect fidelity $(F>0.999)$ regardless of the number of photons subtracted. In this case, the amplitude of the SSCS increases as the number of the subtracted photons gets larger. For example, two-photon subtraction from a squeezed vacuum state of $6.1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{dB}$ can generate a SSCS of $\ensuremath{\alpha}=1.26$, while in the case of the four-photon subtraction a SSCS of a larger amplitude $\ensuremath{\alpha}=1.65$ is obtained under the same condition. When a photon is subtracted from a squeezed vacuum state and another photon is added subsequently, a SSCS with a lower fidelity $(F\ensuremath{\approx}0.96)$ yet higher amplitude $(\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\approx}2)$ can be generated. We analyze some experimental imperfections including inefficiency of the detector used for the photon subtraction.
