Non-Markovian dynamics of few emitters in a laser-driven cavity

Abstract

We study the laser-driven Dicke model beyond the rotating-wave approximation. For weak coupling of the system to environmental degrees of freedom, the dissipative dynamics of the emitter-cavity system is described by the Floquet master equation. Projection of the system evolution onto the emitter degrees of freedom results in non-Markovian behavior. We quantify the non-Markovianity of the resulting emitter dynamics and show that this quantity can be used as an indicator of the dissipative quantum phase transition occurring at high driving amplitudes.

Interplay between external driving, dissipation and collective effects in the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes

Roie Dann

Understanding how external driving and dissipation jointly influence the dynamics of open quantum systems is essential for advancing the study of non-equilibrium quantum phenomena and developing quantum technologies. The present study addresses the issue by exploring the behavior of open systems in driven optical setups coupled to a bosonic field. Starting from an exact non-Markovian master equation for linear systems, we extend the analysis to an ensemble of quantum emitters and validate the proposed solution. The analytical results unveil a range of intriguing phenomena, including pronounced non-Markovian corrections to the coherent driving and a collective cross-driving effect. These effects are experimentally accessible in platforms such as cavity QED, photonic crystals, and state-dependent optical lattices. In the Markovian limit, comparison with exact solutions reveal short-time non-Markovian effects that endure well beyond the environmental correlation decay time, alongside memory effects triggered by short laser pulses. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamics of driven open systems, laying the groundwork for precise quantum state control.

Floquet time-convolutionless master equation for non-Markovian driven quantum systems

Pietro Follia, Heinz-Peter Breuer, Bassano Vacchini

We study the dynamics of open quantum systems driven by an external time-periodic force. Combining Floquet theory and the time-convolutionless projection operator technique we derive a time-local quantum master equation which exactly takes into account the periodic driving, while treating the system-environment interaction within second order in the coupling strength without performing the Markov approximation. The resulting equation of motion for the reduced density matrix is called Floquet time-convolutionless master equation. Employing the example of the driven spin-boson system, we demonstrate that this master equation is capable of describing strong non-Markovian effects, while yielding the Floquet-Lindblad master equation in the Markovian limit. A characteristic feature of memory effects in such driven dissipative systems is the emergence of sharp peaks of the trace-distance based non-Markovianity measure as a function of the driving amplitude, which can be traced back to quasienergy crossings leading to almost decoherence-protected subspaces through a quasienergy-induced dissipative decoupling mechanism.

Dynamic Stark effect, light emission, and entanglement generation in a laser-driven quantum optical system

D. Pagel, Andreas Alvermann, Holger Fehske

We calculate the emission spectra, the Glauber ${g}^{(2)}$ function, and the entanglement of formation for two-level emitters coupled to a single cavity mode and subject to an external laser excitation. To evaluate these quantities we couple the system to environmental degrees of freedom, which leads to dissipative dynamics. Because of the periodic time dependence of the system Hamiltonian, the coefficients of the Markovian master equation are constant only if Floquet states are used as the computational basis. Studying the emission spectra, we show that the dynamic Stark effect first appears in second order of the laser intensity. For the Glauber function, we find clearly distinguished parameter regimes of super- and sub-Poissonian light emission and explain the additional features appearing for finite laser intensity in terms of the quasienergy spectrum of the driven emitter-cavity system. Finally, we analyze the temperature and emitter-cavity-coupling regimes where entanglement among the emitters is generated and show that the laser excitation leads to a decrease of entanglement.

Atom-only descriptions of the driven-dissipative Dicke model

François Damanet, Andrew J. Daley, Jonathan Keeling

We investigate how to describe the dissipative spin dynamics of the driven-dissipative Dicke model, describing $N$ two-level atoms coupled to a cavity mode, after adiabatic elimination of the cavity mode. To this end, we derive a Redfield master equation which goes beyond the standard secular approximation and large detuning limits. We show that the secular (or rotating wave) approximation and the large detuning approximation both lead to inadequate master equations, that fail to predict the Dicke transition or the damping rates of the atomic dynamics. In contrast, the full Redfield theory correctly predicts the phase transition and the effective atomic damping rates. Our work provides a reliable framework to study the full quantum dynamics of atoms in a multimode cavity, where a quantum description of the full model becomes intractable.

Exact non-Markovian cavity dynamics strongly coupled to a reservoir

Heng-Na Xiong, Wei-Min Zhang, Xiaoguang Wang +1 more

The exact non-Markovian dynamics of a microcavity strongly coupled to a general reservoir at arbitrary temperature are studied. With the exact master equation for the reduced density operator of the cavity system, we analytically solve the time evolution of the cavity state and the associated physical observables. We show that the non-Markovian dynamics are completely determined by the propagating (retarded) and correlation Green functions. Comparing the non-Markovian behavior at finite temperature with those at the zero-temperature limit or Born-Markov limit, we find that the non-Markovian memory effect can dramatically change the coherent and thermal dynamics of the cavity. We also numerically study the dissipation dynamics of the cavity through the mean mode amplitude decay and the average photon number decay in the microwave regime. It is shown that the strong coupling between the cavity and the reservoir results in a long-time dissipationless evolution to the cavity field amplitude, and its noise dynamics undergo a critical transition from the weak to the strong coupling due to the non-Markovian memory effect.

Floquet-Markovian description of the parametrically driven, dissipative harmonic quantum oscillator

Sigmund Kohler, Thomas Dittrich, Peter Hänggi A

Using the parametrically driven harmonic oscillator as a working example, we study two different Markovian approaches to the quantum dynamics of a periodically driven system with dissipation. In the simpler approach, the driving enters the master equation for the reduced density operator only in the Hamiltonian term. An improved master equation is achieved by treating the entire driven system within the Floquet formalism and coupling it to the reservoir as a whole. The different ensuing evolution equations are compared in various representations, particularly as Fokker-Planck equations for the Wigner function. On all levels of approximation, these evolution equations retain the periodicity of the driving, so that their solutions have Floquet form and represent eigenfunctions of a nonunitary propagator over a single period of the driving. We discuss asymptotic states in the long-time limit as well as the conservative and the high-temperature limits. Numerical results obtained within the different Markov approximations are compared with the exact path-integral solution. The application of the improved Floquet-Markov scheme becomes increasingly important when considering stronger driving and lower temperatures.
