Abstract

We study the dynamics of the biased sub-Ohmic spin-boson model by means of a time-dependent variational matrix product state (TDVMPS) algorithm. The evolution of both the system and the environment is obtained in the weak- and the strong-coupling regimes, respectively characterized by damped spin oscillations and by a nonequilibrium process where the spin freezes near its initial state, which are explicitly shown to arise from a variety of reactive environmental quantum dynamics. We also explore the rich phenomenology of the intermediate-coupling case, a nonperturbative regime where the system shows a complex dynamical behavior, combining features of both the weakly and the strongly coupled case in a sequential, time-retarded fashion. Our work demonstrates the potential of TDVMPS methods for exploring otherwise elusive, nonperturbative regimes of complex open quantum systems, and points to the possibilities of exploiting the qualitative, real-time modification of quantum properties induced by nonequilibrium bath dynamics in ultrafast transient processes.

Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Dynamics of the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

Frithjof B. Anders, R. Bulla, Matthias Vojta C

Employing the nonperturbative numerical renormalization group method, we study the dynamics of the spin-boson model, which describes a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with a spectral density J(omega) proportional to omega(s). We show that, in contrast with the case of Ohmic damping, the delocalized phase of the sub-Ohmic model cannot be characterized by a single energy scale only, due to the presence of a nontrivial quantum phase transition. In the strongly sub-Ohmic regime, s<<1, weakly damped coherent oscillations on short time scales are possible even in the localized phase--this is of crucial relevance, e.g., for qubits subject to electromagnetic noise.

Simulating open quantum dynamics with time-dependent variational matrix product states: Towards microscopic correlation of environment dynamics and reduced system evolution

Florian A. Y. N. Schröder, Alex W. Chin

We report the development of an efficient many-body algorithm for simulating open quantum system dynamics that utilizes a time-dependent variational principle for matrix product states to evolve large system-environment states. Capturing all system-environment correlations, we reproduce the nonperturbative, quantum-critical dynamics of the zero-temperature spin-boson model, and then exploit the many-body information to visualize the complete time-frequency spectrum of the environmental excitations. Our ``environmental spectra'' reveal correlated vibrational motion in polaronic modes which preserve their vibrational coherence during incoherent spin relaxation, demonstrating how environment information could yield valuable insights into complex quantum dissipative processes.

Coherent dynamics of the spin-boson model in the ultra-strong coupling regime

Nirmalendu Acharyya, Martin Richter, Benjamin Philipp Fingerhut

Quantum mechanics describes the unitary time evolution of closed systems. In practice, every quantum system interacts with the environment, leading to an irreversible loss of coherence. The spin-boson model (SBM) is central to the understanding of the fundamental process of decoherence of a two-state quantum system interacting with a bosonic heat bath, but the nature of transient dynamics in the presence of hybrid diagonal and off-diagonal system-bath interactions remains much less explored. Here, we investigate how the hybrid system-bath interactions of an Ohmic environment induce localization in the bias-free SBM. For strong coupling to the environment, localization is strongly affected by a dynamically generated bias via the renormalization of the tunneling amplitude. We find that counteracting effects of Hamiltonian parameters on non-exponential short-time dynamics and long-time population equilibration can lead to a separation of timescales and transient quantum coherent dynamics that can persist even for ultra-strong system-bath interaction. The findings offer novel insight into the equilibration behavior of quantum devices operating in the ultra-strong coupling regime.

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model: A time-dependent variational study

Ning Wu, Liwei Duan, Xin Li +1 more

The Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation is employed to probe the dynamics of the zero temperature sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with strong friction utilizing the Davydov D1 ansatz. It is shown that initial conditions of the phonon bath have considerable influence on the dynamics. Counterintuitively, even in the very strong coupling regime, quantum coherence features still manage to survive under the polarized bath initial condition, while such features are absent under the factorized bath initial condition. In addition, a coherent-incoherent transition is found at a critical coupling strength α ≈ 0.1 for s = 0.25 under the factorized bath initial condition. We quantify how faithfully our ansatz follows the Schrödinger equation, finding that the time-dependent variational approach is robust for strong dissipation and deep sub-Ohmic baths (s ≪ 1).

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model: A comparison of three numerical approaches

Yao Yao, Liwei Duan, Zhiguo Lü +2 more

Dynamics of the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model is examined using three numerical approaches, namely the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variation with the Davydov D(1) ansatz, the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method within the representation of orthogonal polynomials, and a perturbative approach based on a unitary transformation. In order to probe the validity regimes of the three approaches, we study the dynamics of a qubit coupled to a bosonic bath with and without a local field. Comparison of the up-state population evolution shows that the three approaches are in agreement in the weak-coupling regime but exhibit marked differences when the coupling strength is large. The Davydov D(1) ansatz and the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group can both be reliably employed in the weak-coupling regime, while the former is also valid in the strong-coupling regime as judged by how faithfully the trial state follows the Schrödinger equation. We further explore the bipartite entanglement dynamics between two qubits coupled with individual bosonic baths which reveals entanglement sudden death and revival.
