On the quantum Gaussian optimizers conjecture in the case $ q=p$

Abstract

The quantum Gaussian optimizers conjecture says that q-p norm of a Bosonic Gaussian channel is attained on "Gaussian" operators. Recently R.L. Frank and E.H. Lieb confirmed the hypothesis in the case q=p for gauge-covariant channels with arbitrary number of modes s [3]. In the present note we remark that in the case q=p our results in [6] and [9] in fact allow to prove the hypothesis for all Gaussian channels. Thus the condition of gauge covariance, rather crucial in the case q=1,s>1, plays no role in the case q=p.

Norms of quantum Gaussian multi-mode channels

We compute the Sp→Sp norm of a general Gaussian gauge-covariant multi-mode channel for any 1 ≤ p < ∞, where Sp is a Schatten space. As a consequence, we verify the Gaussian optimizer conjecture and the multiplicativity conjecture in these cases.

Gaussian optimizers and the additivity problem in quantum information theory

A S Holevo

We give a survey of the two remarkable analytical problems of quantum information theory. The main part is a detailed report of the recent (partial) solution of the quantum Gaussian optimizers problem which establishes an optimal property of Glauber's coherent states -- a particular instance of pure quantum Gaussian states. We elaborate on the notion of quantum Gaussian channel as a noncommutative generalization of Gaussian kernel to show that the coherent states, and under certain conditions only they, minimize a broad class of the concave functionals of the output of a Gaussian channel. Thus, the output states corresponding to the Gaussian input are "the least chaotic", majorizing all the other outputs. The solution, however, is essentially restricted to the gauge-invariant case where a distinguished complex structure plays a special role. We also comment on the related famous additivity conjecture, which was solved in principle in the negative some five years ago. This refers to the additivity or multiplicativity (with respect to tensor products of channels) of information quantities related to the classical capacity of quantum channel, such as $(1\rightarrow p)$-norms or the minimal von Neumann or Rényi output entropies. A remarkable corollary of the present solution of the quantum Gaussian optimizers problem is that these additivity properties, while not valid in general, do hold in the important and interesting class of the gauge-covariant Gaussian channels.

On the minimum output entropy of single-mode phase-insensitive Gaussian channels

Haoyu Qi, Mark M. Wilde, Saikat Guha

Recently de Palma et al. [IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 728 (2017)] proved---using Lagrange multiplier techniques---that under a non-zero input entropy constraint, a thermal state input minimizes the output entropy of a pure-loss bosonic channel. In this note, we present our attempt to generalize this result to all single-mode gauge-covariant Gaussian channels by using similar techniques. Unlike the case of the pure-loss channel, we cannot prove that the thermal input state is the only local extremum of the optimization problem. %It is unclear to us why the same techniques do not lead to a proof for amplifier channels. However, we do prove that, if the conjecture holds for gauge-covariant Gaussian channels, it would also hold for gauge-contravariant Gaussian channels. The truth of the latter leads to a solution of the triple trade-off and broadcast capacities of quantum-limited amplifier channels. We note that de Palma et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 160503 (2017)] have now proven the conjecture for all single-mode gauge-covariant Gaussian channels by employing a different approach from what we outline here. Proving a multi-mode generalization of de Palma et al.'s above mentioned result---i.e., given a lower bound on the von Neumann entropy of the input to an $n$-mode lossy thermal-noise bosonic channel, an $n$-mode product thermal state input minimizes the output entropy---will establish an important special case of the conjectured Entropy Photon-number Inequality (EPnI). The EPnI, if proven true, would take on a role analogous to Shannon's EPI in proving coding theorem converses involving quantum limits of classical communication over bosonic channels.

Gaussian Maximizers for Quantum Gaussian Observables and Ensembles

Alexander Semenovich Holevo

In this paper we prove two results related to the Gaussian optimizers conjecture for multimode bosonic system with gauge symmetry. First, we argue that the classical capacity of an arbitrary Gaussian observable is attained on a Gaussian ensemble of coherent states. This generalizes results previously known for heterodyne measurement in one mode. By using this fact and continuous variable version of ensemble-observable duality, we prove an old conjecture that accessible information of arbitrary Gaussian ensemble is attained on the multimode generalization of the heterodyne measurement.

Logarithmic Sobolev inequality and Hypothesis of Quantum Gaussian Maximizers

Alexander Semenovich Holevo

A long-standing problem in quantum Shannon theory is the classical capacity of bosonic Gaussian channels of various kinds [6].The Hypothesis of Gaussian Maximizers (HGM) states that the full capacity of such channels is attained at Gaussian encodings.A breakthrough was made in the papers [1] and [2], where HGM was proved for the important class of multimode gauge co-or contra-variant Gaussian channels [4].In [8] and [5] the solution was extended to a much broader class of channels satisfying a certain 'threshold condition'.At the same time the HGM remains open for a large variety of Gaussian channels lying beyond the scope of the threshold condition [7].In this note we sketch a novel approach to such problems, based on principles of convex programming, and illustrate it using the characteristic case of an approximate position measurement with energy constraint, underlying noisy Gaussian homodyning in quantum optics.Rather remarkably, for this particular model the method reduces the solution of the optimization problem to a generalization of the celebrated log-Sobolev inequality.Let S be the convex set of all density operators in a separable Hilbert space H of the quantum system and X and Y be standard measurable spaces.Consider a measurement channel M : ρ → p ρ (y) = Tr ρm(y), where ρ ∈ S and m(y) is a uniformly bounded positive operator-valued function of y ∈ Y such that m(y) µ(dy) = I (I is the identity operator on H and µ is a measure). The encoding E = {π(dx), ρ(x)} is a probability measure π(dx) with a measurable family of

Passive States Optimize the Output of Bosonic Gaussian Quantum Channels

Giacomo De Palma, Dario Trevisan, Vittorio Giovannetti

An ordering between the quantum states emerging from a single-mode gauge-covariant bosonic Gaussian channel is proved. Specifically, we show that within the set of input density matrices with the same given spectrum, the element passive with respect to the Fock basis (i.e., diagonal with decreasing eigenvalues) produces an output, which majorizes all the other outputs emerging from the same set. When applied to pure input states, our finding includes as a special case the result of Mari et al., Nat. Comm. 5, 3826 (2014) which implies that the output associated to the vacuum majorizes the others.
