Ultracold Heteronuclear Three-Body Systems: How Diabaticity Limits the Universality of Recombination into Shallow Dimers

Abstract

The mass-imbalanced three-body recombination process that forms a shallow dimer is shown to possess a rich Efimov-Stückelberg landscape, with corresponding spectra that differ fundamentally from the homonuclear case. A semianalytical treatment of the three-body recombination predicts unusual spectra with intertwined resonance peaks and minima and yields in-depth insight into the behavior of the corresponding Efimov spectra. In particular, the patterns of the Efimov-Stückelberg landscape are shown to depend inherently on the degree of diabaticity of the three-body collisions, which strongly affects the universality of the heteronuclear Efimov states.

Fano profiles of Efimov resonances in mass-imbalanced ultracold gases

Panagiotis Giannakeas, Chris H. Greene

The resonant profile of the rate coefficient for three-body recombination into a shallow dimer is investigated for mass-imbalanced systems. In the low-energy limit, three atoms collide with zero-range interactions, in a regime where the scattering lengths of the heavy-heavy and the heavy-light subsystems are positive and negative, respectively. For this physical system, the adiabatic hyperspherical representation is combined with a fully semi-classical method and we show that the shallow dimer recombination spectra display an asymmetric Fano lineshape that originates from the coexistence of Efimov resonances with Stuckelberg interference minima. In particular, a closed form expression is derived that describes the width of the corresponding Efimov resonances and the Fano lineshape asymmetry parameter $q$. The profile of Efimov resonances exhibits a $q-$reversal effect as the inter- and intra-species scattering lengths vary. In the case of a diverging asymmetry parameter, i.e. $|q|\to \infty$, we show that the Efimov resonances possess zero width and are fully decoupled from the three-body and atom-dimer continua, and the corresponding Efimov metastable states behave as bound levels.

Universal Three-Body Physics in Ultracold KRb Mixtures

L. J. Wacker, Nils B. Jørgensen, Dorthe Birkmose +5 more

Ultracold atomic gases have recently become a driving force in few-body physics due to the observation of the Efimov effect. While initially observed in equal mass systems, one expects even richer few-body physics in the heteronuclear case. In previous experiments with ultracold mixtures of potassium and rubidium, an unexpected nonuniversal behavior of Efimov resonances was observed. In contrast, we measure the scattering length dependent three-body recombination coefficient in ultracold heteronuclear mixtures of ^{39}K-^{87}Rb and ^{41}K-^{87}Rb and do not observe any signatures of Efimov resonances for accessible scattering lengths in either mixture. Our results show good agreement with our theoretical model for the scattering dependent three-body recombination coefficient and reestablish universality across isotopic mixtures.

Universal Dimer in a Collisionally Opaque Medium: Experimental Observables and Efimov Resonances

Olga Machtey, David A. Kessler, Lev Khaykovich

A universal dimer is subject to secondary collisions with atoms when formed in a cloud of ultracold atoms via three-body recombination. We show that in a collisionally opaque medium, the value of the scattering length that results in the maximum number of secondary collisions may not correspond to the Efimov resonance at the atom-dimer threshold and thus cannot be automatically associated with it. This result explains a number of controversies in recent experimental results on universal three-body states and supports the emerging evidence for the significant finite range corrections to the first excited Efimov energy level.

Three-body recombination in heteronuclear mixtures at finite temperature

Dmitry S. Petrov, Félix Werner

Within the universal zero-range theory, we compute the three-body recombination rate to deep molecular states for two identical bosons resonantly interacting with each other and with a third atom of another species, in the absence of weakly bound dimers. The results allow for a quantitative understanding of loss resonances at finite temperature and, combined with experimental data, can be used for testing the Efimov universality and extracting the corresponding three-body parameters in a given system. Curiously, we find that the loss rate can be dramatically enhanced by the resonant heavy-heavy interaction, even for high mass ratios where this interaction is practically irrelevant for the Efimov scaling factor. This effect is important for analyzing the recent loss measurements in the Cs-Li mixture.

Efimov effect for heteronuclear three-body systems at positive scattering length and finite temperature

Samuel B. Emmons, Daekyoung Kang, Bijaya Acharya +1 more

We study the recombination process of three atoms scattering into an atom and diatomic molecule in heteronuclear mixtures of ultracold atomic gases with large and positive interspecies scattering length at finite temperature. We calculate the temperature dependence of the three-body recombination rates by extracting universal scaling functions that parametrize the energy dependence of the scattering matrix. We compare our results to experimental data for the $^{40}\mathrm{K}\ensuremath{-}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ mixture and make a prediction for $^{6}\mathrm{Li}\ensuremath{-}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. We find that contributions from higher partial wave channels significantly impact the total rate and, in systems with particularly large mass imbalance, can even obliterate the recombination minima associated with the Efimov effect.
