Abstract

We investigate the effect of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems by employing the hierarchical equations of motion in the framework of the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach. As illustrative examples, the non-Markovian memory effect of a qubit embedded in a bosonic or a fermionic environment with a detuned Lorentz spectrum at zero temperature is analyzed. It is found that the counter-rotating-wave terms are able to enhance the observed non-Markovianity whether the environment is composed of bosons or fermions. This result suggests that the rotating-wave approximation may reduce the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems. Moreover, we find that the modification of the non-Markovianity due to the different statistical properties of environmental modes becomes larger with the increase of the system-environment coupling strength.

Non-Markovianity in experimentally simulated quantum channels: Role of counterrotating-wave terms

Shao-Jie Xiong, Qiwu Hu, Zhe Sun +4 more

We experimentally investigate the non-Markovianity problems in a quantum channel implemented by an all-optical setup. The quantum channel simulates the dynamics of a two-level (qubit) system surrounded by bosonic modes, with the system-environment interaction treated without applying the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). Therefore, it allows us to demonstrate the important role of counterrotating-wave terms in influencing the memory effects of the environment. The experimental and theoretical results are in good agreement and show quite different behaviors of the non-Markovianity measure between RWA and non-RWA channels. One can find the nonmonotonic dependence of the non-Markovianity measure on the coupling and detuning parameters in the non-RWA case, which is attributed to the competing mechanisms caused by the counterrotating-wave terms. We emphasize that the non-RWA channel provides a more clear description of the open-system dynamics and the counterrotating-wave terms are indispensable in the study of non-Markovianity.

Quantum speed limits in open systems: Non-Markovian dynamics without rotating-wave approximation

Zhe Sun, Jing Liu, Jian Ma +1 more

We derive an easily computable quantum speed limit (QSL) time bound for open systems whose initial states can be chosen as either pure or mixed states. Moreover, this QSL time is applicable to either Markovian or non-Markovian dynamics. By using of a hierarchy equation method, we numerically study the QSL time bound in a qubit system interacting with a single broadened cavity mode without rotating-wave, Born and Markovian approximation. By comparing with rotating-wave approximation (RWA) results, we show that the counter-rotating terms are helpful to increase evolution speed. The problem of non-Markovianity is also considered. We find that for non-RWA cases, increasing system-bath coupling can not always enhance the non-Markovianity, which is qualitatively different from the results with RWA. When considering the relation between QSL and non-Markovianity, we find that for small broadening widths of the cavity mode, non-Markovianity can increase the evolution speed in either RWA or non-RWA cases, while, for larger broadening widths, it is not true for non-RWA cases.

Effects of counter-rotating-wave terms on the noisy frequency estimation

Ze-Zhou Zhang, Wei Wu

We investigate the problem of estimating the tunneling frequency of a two-level atomic system embedded in a dissipative environment by employing a numerically rigorous hierarchical equations-of-motion method. The effect of counter-rotating-wave terms on the attainable precision of the noisy quantum metrology is systematically studied beyond the usual framework of perturbative treatments. We find the counter-rotating-wave terms are able to boost the noisy quantum metrological performance in the intermediate- and strong-coupling regimes, whether the dissipative environment is composed of bosons or fermions. The results presented in this paper may pave the way to design a high-precision quantum estimation scenario under practical decoherence.

Quantum interferometric power and non-Markovianity in the decoherence channels

Shao-Jie Xiong, Zhe Sun, Xiaoguang Wang

In quantum open systems, non-Markovianity is an important phenomenon that allows a backflow of information from the environment to the system. In this work, we investigate the non-Markovianity problems in two different types of channels, where the system–environment interactions are treated with and without the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). We employ the quantum interferometric power (QIP) to quantify the non-Markovian dynamics, which is the minimal quantum Fisher information obtained by the local unitary evolution in a bipartite system. By the hierarchy equation method, we calculate the dynamical evolution of the QIP in the non-RWA case. The results show that the dynamical behavior under the non-RWA is significantly different from that under the RWA in both weak and strong coupling. Moreover, in the non-RWA case, we also find the nonmonotonic behavior of the non-Markovianity measure with the variation of coupling strength, which is caused by the competition between the rotating-wave terms and the counterrotating-wave terms. As a result, we highlight the importance of the counterrotating-wave terms for the influence of non-Markovianity.

Quantification of memory effects in the spin-boson model

Govinda Clos, Heinz‐Peter Breuer

Employing a recently proposed measure for quantum non-Markovianity, we carry out a systematic study of the size of memory effects in the spin-boson model for a large region of temperature and frequency cutoff parameters. The dynamics of the open system is described utilizing a second-order time-convolutionless master equation without the Markov or rotating wave approximations. While the dynamics is found to be strongly non-Markovian for low temperatures and cutoffs, in general, we observe a special regime favoring Markovian behavior. This effect is explained as resulting from a resonance between the system's transition frequency and the frequencies of the dominant environmental modes. We further demonstrate that the corresponding Redfield equation is capable of reproducing the characteristic features of the non-Markovian quantum behavior of the model.

Exact non-Markovian dynamics of qubits coupled to two interacting environments

H. Z. Shen, Dongxiao Li, Shi‐Lei Su +2 more

As the memory effect may be helpful in quantum information processing, non-Markovian dynamics plays an important role in the description of many-body open systems. Among these topics, the system consisting of independent qubits interacting with several coupled environments is of particular interest. In this paper, we study the exact non-Markovian dynamics of two independent qubits. Each of the qubits interacts individually with its environment, and these two environments coupled with each other. We investigate the non-Markovianity measure of the system for the whole parameter regime without the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and compare the results with that under the RWA. We find that the non-Markovianity measure for two qubits manifests a transition from a non-Markovian to Markovian regime regardless of the coupling strength between the environments. The physical origin of this transition is revealed, and a possible observation of the prediction in superconducting quantum interference devices is discussed.
