Abstract

We present a complete symmetry classification of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 0, 1 and 2 supersymmetry (SUSY) on the basis of the Altland-Zirnbauer scheme in random matrix theory (RMT). For $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 0 and 1 we consider generic q-body interactions in the Hamiltonian and find RMT classes that were not present in earlier classifications of the same model with q = 4. We numerically establish quantitative agreement between the distributions of the smallest energy levels in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 SYK model and RMT. Furthermore, we delineate the distinctive structure of the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 SYK model and provide its complete symmetry classification based on RMT for all eigenspaces of the fermion number operator. We corroborate our classification by detailed numerical comparisons with RMT and thus establish the presence of quantum chaotic dynamics in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ =2 SYK model. We also introduce a new SYK-like model without SUSY that exhibits hybrid properties of the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 and $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 SYK models and uncover its rich structure both analytically and numerically.

Classification of the quantum chaos in colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Fadi Sun, Yu Yi-Xiang, Jinwu Ye +1 more

The random matrix theory (RMT) can be used to classify both topological phases of matter and quantum chaos. We develop a systematic and transformative RMT to classify the quantum chaos in the colored Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model first introduced by Gross and Rosenhaus. Here we focus on the two-colored case and the four-colored case with a balanced number of Majorana fermions $N$. By identifying the maximal symmetries, the independent parity conservation sectors, the minimum (irreducible) Hilbert space, and especially the relevant antiunitary and unitary operators, we show that the color degrees of freedom lead to novel quantum chaotic behaviors. When $N$ is odd, different symmetry operators need to be constructed to make the classifications complete. The two-colored case only shows the threefold Wigner-Dyson way, and the four-colored case shows the tenfold generalized Wigner-Dyson way which may also have nontrivial edge exponents. We also study two- and four-colored hybrid SYK models, which display many salient quantum chaotic features hidden in the corresponding pure SYK models. These features motivate us to develop a systematic RMT to study the energy level statistics of two or four uncorrelated random matrix ensembles. The exact diagonalizations are performed to study both the bulk energy level statistics and the edge exponents and to find excellent agreement with our exact maximal symmetry classifications. Our complete and systematic methods can be easily extended to study the generic imbalanced cases. They may be transferred to the classifications of colored tensor models, quantum chromodynamics with pairings across different colors, quantum black holes, and interacting symmetry protected (or enriched) topological phases.

Periodic Table of the Ordinary and Supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Models

Fadi Sun, Jinwu Ye

We develop a unified minimal scheme to classify quantum chaos in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) and supersymmetric (SUSY) SYK models and also work out the structure of the energy levels in one periodic table. The SYK with even q-body or SUSY SYK with odd q-body interaction, with N even or odd number of sites, are put on an equal footing in the minimal Hilbert space; N (mod 8), q (mod 4) double Bott periodicity, and a reflection condition are identified. Exact diagonalizations (EDs) are performed to study both the bulk energy level statistics and hard-edge behaviors. Excellent agreements between the ED results and the symmetry classifications are demonstrated. Our compact and systematic methods can be transformed to map out more complicated periodic tables of SYK models with more degrees of freedom, tensor models, or symmetry protected topological phases.

Tenfold way and many-body zero modes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Jan Behrends, Jens Hjorleifur Bardarson, Benjámin Béri

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, in its simplest form, describes $k$ Majorana fermions with random all-to-all four-body interactions. We consider the SYK model in the framework of a many-body Altland-Zirnbauer classification that sees the system as belonging to one of eight (real) symmetry classes depending on the value of $k\phantom{\rule{3.33333pt}{0ex}}mod\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}8$. We show that, depending on the symmetry class, the system may support exact many-body zero modes with the symmetries also dictating whether these may have a nonzero contribution to Majorana fermions, i.e., single-particle weight. These zero modes appear in all but two of the symmetry classes. When present, they leave clear signatures in physical observables that go beyond the threefold (Wigner-Dyson) possibilities for level spacing statistics studied earlier. Signatures we discover include a zero-energy peak or hole in the single-particle spectral function, depending on whether symmetries allow or forbid zero modes to have single-particle weight. The zero modes are also shown to influence the many-body dynamics, where signatures include a nonzero long-time limit for the out-of-time-order correlation function. Furthermore, we show that the extension of the four-body SYK model by quadratic terms can be interpreted as realizing the remaining two complex symmetry classes; we thus demonstrate how the entire tenfold Altland-Zirnbauer classification may emerge in the SYK model.

Supersymmetry in the Standard Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

Jan Behrends, Benjámin Béri

Supersymmetry is a powerful concept in quantum many-body physics. It helps to illuminate ground-state properties of complex quantum systems and gives relations between correlation functions. In this Letter, we show that the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, in its simplest form of Majorana fermions with random four-body interactions, is supersymmetric. In contrast to existing explicitly supersymmetric extensions of the model, the supersymmetry we find requires no relations between couplings. The type of supersymmetry and the structure of the supercharges are entirely set by the number of interacting Majorana modes and are thus fundamentally linked to the model's Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The supersymmetry we uncover has a natural interpretation in terms of a one-dimensional topological phase supporting Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev boundary physics and has consequences away from the ground state, including in q-body dynamical correlation functions.

Symmetry classes, many-body zero modes, and supersymmetry in the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Jan Behrends, Benjámin Béri

The complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (cSYK) model is a charge-conserving model of randomly interacting fermions. The interaction term can be chosen such that the model exhibits chiral symmetry. Then, depending on the charge sector and the number of interacting fermions, level spacing statistics suggests a fourfold categorization of the model into the three Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. In this work, inspired by previous findings for the Majorana Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, we embed the symmetry classes of the cSYK model in the Altland-Zirnbauer framework and identify consequences of chiral symmetry originating from correlations across different charge sectors. In particular, we show that for an odd number of fermions, the model hosts exact many-body zero modes that can be combined into a generalized fermion that does not affect the system's energy. This fermion directly leads to quantum-mechanical supersymmetry that, unlike explicitly supersymmetric cSYK constructions, does not require fine-tuned couplings, but only chiral symmetry. Signatures of the generalized fermion, and thus supersymmetry, include the long-time plateau in time-dependent correlation functions of fermion-parity-odd observables: The plateau may take nonzero value only for certain combinations of the fermion structure of the observable and the system's symmetry class. We illustrate our findings through exact diagonalization simulations of the system's dynamics.

Universal ratio in random matrix theory and chaotic-to-integrable transition in type-I and type-II hybrid Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Fadi Sun, Yu Yi-Xiang, Jinwu Ye +1 more

We investigate chaotic to integrable transition in two types of hybrid SYK models, which contain both $q=4$ SYK with interaction $J$ and $q=2$ SYK with an interaction $K$ in type-I or ${(q=2)}^{2}$ SYK with an interaction $\sqrt{K}$ in type-II. These models include hybrid Majorana fermion, complex fermion, and bosonic SYK. For the Majorana fermion case, we discuss both $N$ even and $N$ odd case. We make exact symmetry analysis on the possible symmetry class of both types of hybrid SYK in the 10-fold way by random matrix theory (RMT) and also work out the degeneracy of each energy levels. We introduce a new universal ratio, which is the ratio of the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) energy level spacing to characterize the RMT. We perform exact diagonalization to evaluate both the known NN ratio and the new NNN ratio, then use both ratios to study chaotic to integrable transitions (CIT) in both types of hybrid SYK models. Some preliminary results on possible quantum analog of Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) theorem and its dual version in the quantum chaotic side are given. We explore some intrinsic connections between the two complementary approaches to quantum chaos: the RMT and the Lyapunov exponent by the $1/N$ expansion in the large $N$ limit at a suitable temperature range. We stress the crucial differences between the quantum phase transition (QPT) characterized by renormalization groups at $N=\ensuremath{\infty}$, $1/N$ expansions at a finite $N$, and the CIT characterized by the RMT at a finite $N$: the former focus on the ground state and its low-energy excitations (edge states in the Fock space), the latter on excited states (bulk states in the Fock space). We also discuss eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH)'s power on a quantum chaotic bulk state and its inability to encode the edge states. Comments on some previously related works are given. Some future perspectives, especially the failure of the Zamoloddchikov's c-theorem in 1d CFT RG flow are outlined.
