Abstract

We study the nonequilibrium phase structure of the three-state random quantum Potts model in one dimension. This spin chain is characterized by a non-Abelian ${D}_{3}$ symmetry recently argued to be incompatible with the existence of a symmetry-preserving many-body localized (MBL) phase. Using exact diagonalization and a finite-size scaling analysis, we find that the model supports two distinct broken-symmetry MBL phases at strong disorder that either break the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ clock symmetry or a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ chiral symmetry. In a dual formulation, our results indicate the existence of a stable finite-temperature topological phase with MBL-protected parafermionic end zero modes. While we find a thermal symmetry-preserving regime for weak disorder, scaling analysis at strong disorder points to an infinite-randomness critical point between two distinct broken-symmetry MBL phases.

Particle-hole symmetry, many-body localization, and topological edge modes

Romain Vasseur, Aaron J. Friedman, S. A. Parameswaran +1 more

We study the excited states of interacting fermions in one dimension with particle-hole symmetric disorder (equivalently, random-bond XXZ chains) using a combination of renormalization group methods and exact diagonalization. Absent interactions, the entire many-body spectrum exhibits infinite-randomness quantum critical behavior with highly degenerate excited states. We show that though interactions are an irrelevant perturbation in the ground state, they drastically affect the structure of excited states: Even arbitrarily weak interactions split the degeneracies in favor of thermalization (weak disorder) or spontaneously broken particle-hole symmetry, driving the system into a many-body localized spin glass phase (strong disorder). In both cases, the quantum critical properties of the noninteracting model are destroyed, either by thermal decoherence or spontaneous symmetry breaking. This system then has the interesting and counterintuitive property that edges of the many-body spectrum are less localized than the center of the spectrum. We argue that our results rule out the existence of certain excited state symmetry-protected topological orders.

Perturbative instability of nonergodic phases in non-Abelian quantum chains

Brayden Ware, Dmitry A. Abanin, Romain Vasseur

An important challenge in the field of many-body quantum dynamics is to identify nonergodic states of matter beyond many-body localization (MBL). Strongly disordered spin chains with non-Abelian symmetry and chains of non-Abelian anyons are natural candidates, as they are incompatible with standard MBL. In such chains, real space renormalization group methods predict a partially localized, nonergodic regime known as a quantum critical glass (a critical variant of MBL). This regime features a treelike hierarchy of integrals of motion and symmetric eigenstates with entanglement entropy that scales as a logarithmically enhanced area law. We argue that such tentative nonergodic states are perturbatively unstable using an analytic computation of the scaling of off-diagonal matrix elements and accessible level spacing of local perturbations. Our results indicate that strongly disordered chains with non-Abelian symmetry display either spontaneous symmetry breaking or ergodic thermal behavior at long times. We identify the relevant length and timescales for thermalization: Even if such chains eventually thermalize, they can exhibit nonergodic dynamics up to parametrically long timescales with a nonanalytic dependence on disorder strength.

Absence of localization in interacting spin chains with a discrete symmetry

Benedikt Kloss, Jad C. Halimeh, Achilleas Lazarides +1 more

Novel paradigms of strong ergodicity breaking have recently attracted significant attention in condensed matter physics. Understanding the exact conditions required for their emergence or breakdown not only sheds more light on thermalization and its absence in closed quantum many-body systems, but it also has potential benefits for applications in quantum information technology. A case of particular interest is many-body localization whose conditions are not yet fully settled. Here, we prove that spin chains symmetric under a combination of mirror and spin-flip symmetries and with a non-degenerate spectrum show finite spin transport at zero total magnetization and infinite temperature. We demonstrate this numerically using two prominent examples: the Stark many-body localization system (Stark-MBL) and the symmetrized many-body localization system (symmetrized-MBL). We provide evidence of delocalization at all energy densities and show that delocalization persists when the symmetry is broken. We use our results to construct two localized systems which, when coupled, delocalize each other. Our work demonstrates the dramatic effect symmetries can have on disordered systems, proves that the existence of exact resonances is not a sufficient condition for delocalization, and opens the door to generalization to higher spatial dimensions and different conservation laws.

Eigenstate phases with finite on-site non-Abelian symmetry

Abhishodh Prakash, Sriram Ganeshan, Lukasz Fidkowski +1 more

We study the eigenstate phases of disordered spin chains with on-site finite non-Abelian symmetry. We develop a general formalism based on standard group theory to construct local spin Hamiltonians invariant under any on-site symmetry. We then specialize to the case of the simplest non-Abelian group, ${S}_{3}$, and numerically study a particular two-parameter spin-1 Hamiltonian. We observe a thermal phase and a many-body localized phase with a spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) from ${S}_{3}$ to ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ in our model Hamiltonian. We diagnose these phases using full entanglement distributions and level statistics. We also use a spin-glass diagnostic specialized to detect spontaneous breaking of the ${S}_{3}$ symmetry down to ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$. Our observed phases are consistent with the possibilities outlined by A. C. Potter and R. Vasseur [Phys. Rev. B 94, 224206 (2016)], namely thermal/ergodic and many-body-localized spin-glass (MBL-SG) phases. We also speculate on the nature of an intermediate region between the thermal and MBL + SSB regions where full ${S}_{3}$ symmetry exists.

Symmetry constraints on many-body localization

Andrew C. Potter, Romain Vasseur

We derive general constraints on the existence of many-body localized (MBL) phases in the presence of global symmetries, and show that MBL is not possible with symmetry groups that protect multiplets (e.g., all non-Abelian symmetry groups). Based on simple representation theoretic considerations, we derive general Mermin-Wagner--type principles governing the possible alternative fates of nonequilibrium dynamics in isolated, strongly disordered quantum systems. Our results rule out the existence of MBL symmetry-protected topological phases with non-Abelian symmetry groups, as well as time-reversal symmetry-protected electronic topological insulators, and in fact all fermion topological insulators and superconductors in the 10-fold way classification. Moreover, extending our arguments to systems with intrinsic topological order, we rule out MBL phases with non-Abelian anyons as well as certain classes of symmetry-enriched topological orders.

Many-body localization of Z3 Fock parafermions

M. S. Bahovadinov, Wouter Buijsman, Aleksey K. Fedorov +2 more

We study the effects of a random magnetic field on a one-dimensional (1D) spin-1 chain with correlated nearest-neighbor XY interaction. We show that this spin model can be exactly mapped onto the 1D disordered tight-binding model of ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ Fock parafermions (FPFs), exotic anyonic quasiparticles that generalize usual spinless fermions. Thus, we have a peculiar case of a disordered Hamiltonian that despite being bilinear in the creation and annihilation operators, exhibits a many-body localization (MBL) transition owing to the nontrivial statistics of FPFs. This is in sharp contrast to conventional bosonic and fermionic quadratic disordered Hamiltonians that show single-particle (Anderson) localization. We perform finite-size exact diagonalization calculations of level-spacing statistics, fractal dimensions, and entanglement entropy, and provide convincing evidence for the MBL transition at finite disorder strength.
