Abstract

Standard Leggett-Garg inequalities (SLGIs) were formulated for testing incompatibility between the classical world view of macrorealism and quantum mechanics. In recent times, various other formulations such as the Wigner form of Leggett-Garg inequalities (WLGIs), entropic Leggett-Garg inequalities (ELGIs), and the no-signaling-in-time (NSIT) condition have also been proposed. It was also recently argued that $no$ set of SLGIs can provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for macrorealism, but a suitable conjunction of NSIT conditions provides the same. In this paper, we first provide a comparative study of the various formulations of Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGIs) for testing macrorealism pertaining to the two different unsharp measurements. While the violations of WLGIs are more robust than SLGIs and ELGIs for spin positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), here we demonstrate that for the case of biased POVMs the quantum violations of both SLGIs and ELGIs provide the same robustness as WLGIs. Importantly, the violations of all formulations of LGIs can be achieved for any nonzero value of unsharpness parameter. We have also studied the connection between LGIs and NSIT conditions. Further, we investigate the role of the joint measurability of the POVMs in the violation of LGIs and find that there is $no$ generic connection.

Wigner's form of the Leggett-Garg inequality, the no-signaling-in-time condition, and unsharp measurements

Debashis Saha, Shiladitya Mal, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi +1 more

Wigner's form of the local realist inequality is used to derive its temporal version for an oscillating two-level system involving two-time joint probabilities. Such an inequality may be regarded as a form of the Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI) constituting a necessary condition for macrorealism. The robustness of its quantum mechanical (QM) violation against unsharpness of measurement is investigated by using a suitable model of unsharp measurements. It is found that there exists a range of values of the sharpness parameter (characterizing precision of the relevant measurements) for which the usual LGI is satisfied by QM, but Wigner's form of the LGI (WLGI) is violated. This implies that for such unsharp measurements, the QM violation of macrorealism cannot be tested using the usual LGI, but can be tested using WLGI. In showing this, we take into account the general form of the usual LGI involving an arbitrary number of pairs of two-time correlation functions. Another recently proposed necessary condition for macrorealism, called ``no-signaling in time,'' is also probed, showing that its QM violation persists for arbitrarily unsharp measurements.

Quantum violation of variants of Leggett-Garg inequalities up to the algebraic maximum for a qubit system

A. K. Pan, Md Qutubuddin, Swati Kumari

In 1985, Leggett and Garg formulated a class of inequalities for testing the compatibility between macrorealism and quantum mechanics. In this paper, we point out that, based on the same assumptions of macrorealism that are used to derive Leggett-Garg inequalities (LGIs), there is a scope of formulating another class of inequalities different from the standard LGIs. By considering the three-time measurement scenario in a dichotomic system, we first propose an interesting variant of the standard LGIs and show that its quantum violation is larger than the standard LGIs. By extending this formulation to the $n$-time measurement scenario, we found that the quantum violations of variants of the LGIs for a qubit system increase with $n$, and, for a sufficiently large $n$, an algebraic maximum can be reached. We then compare the violations of the standard and variants of the LGIs in an unsharp measurement scenario and show that, for any arbitrary $n$, the violation of the latter is more robust to unsharpness than the former. Furthermore, we examine the relation between the quantum violations of the variants of the LGIs and an another formulation macrorealism, known as no-signaling in time conditions.

Quantum violations of L u ¨ ders bound Leggett–Garg inequalities for non-unitary quantum channel

Asmita Kumari, A. K. Pan

Abstract Leggett Garg inequalities (LGIs) provides an elegant way for probing the incompatibility between the notion of macrorealism and quantum mechanics. For unitary dynamics the optimal quantum violation of a LGI is constrained by the L u ¨ ders bound. In this paper, we have studied two formulations of LGIs in three-time LG scenario, viz, the standard LGIs and third-order LGIs both for unbiased and biased measurement settings. We show that if system evolves under non-unitary quantum channel between two measurements, the quantum violations of both forms of LGIs exceed their respective L u ¨ ders bounds and can even reach their algebraic maximum in sharp measurement settings. We found that when the measurement is unsharp the quantum violations of both standard and third-order LGIs for non-unitary quantum channel can be obtained for lower value of the unsharpness parameter compared to the unitary dynamics. We critically examined the violation of L u ¨ ders bound of LGIs and its relation to the violation of various no-signaling in time conditions, another formalism for testing macrorealism. It is shown that mere violations of no-signaling conditions are not enough to warrant the violation of standard LGIs, an interplay between the violations of various NSIT condition along with a threshold value play an important role. On the other hand violation of third-order LGI is obtained when the degree of violation of a specific no-signaling in time condition reaches a different threshold value.

Quantum mechanical violation of macrorealism for large spin and its robustness against coarse-grained measurements

Shiladitya Mal, Debarshi Das, Dipankar Home

For multilevel spin systems, robustness of the quantum mechanical (QM) violation of macrorealism (MR) with respect to coarse-grained measurements is investigated using three different necessary conditions of MR, namely, the Leggett-Garg inequality (LGI), Wigner's form of the Leggett-Garg inequality (WLGI), and the condition of no-signaling in time (NSIT). It is shown that for dichotomic sharp measurements, in the asymptotic limit of spin, the algebraic maxima of the QM violations of all these three necessary conditions of MR are attained. Importantly, the QM violations of all these persist in that limit even for arbitrary unsharp measurements, i.e., for any nonzero value of the sharpness parameter characterizing the degree of fuzziness of the relevant measurements. We also find that, when different measurement outcomes are clubbed into two groups for the sake of dichotomizing the outcomes, the asymmetry or symmetry in the number of outcomes in the two groups, signifying the degree of coarse graining of measurements, has a crucial role in discerning quantum violation of MR. The results clearly demonstrate that classicality does not emerge in the asymptotic limit of spin, whatever be the unsharpness and degree of coarse graining of the measurements.

Inequivalent Leggett-Garg inequalities

Swati Kumari, A. K. Pan

It remains an open question how a realist view of the macroscopic world emerges from a quantum formalism. For testing the macrorealism in the quantum domain, an interesting approach was put forward by Leggett and Garg in 1985, by formulating a suitable inequality valid for any macrorealistic theory. Recently, by following the Wigner idea of local realist inequality, a probabilistic version of standard Leggett-Garg inequalities has also been proposed. While the Wigner form of local realist inequalities is equivalent to the two-party, two-measurements and two-outcomes CHSH inequalities, in this paper we provide a generic proof to demonstrate that the Wigner form of Leggett-Garg inequalities is not only inequivalent to the standard ones, but also stronger than the latter. This is demonstrated by quantifying the amount of disturbance caused by a priori measurement to the subsequent measurements. In this connection, the relation between LGIs and another formulation of macrorealism known as no-signaling in time is examined.

Various formulations of inequivalent Leggett–Garg inequalities

Swati Kumari, A. K. Pan

Abstract In two-party, two-input and two-output measurement scenario only relevant Bell’s inequality is the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt (CHSH) form. They also provide the necessary and sufficient conditions (NSCs) for local realism. Any other form, such as, Clauser–Horne and Wigner forms reduce to the CHSH one. The standard Leggett–Garg inequalities, proposed for testing incompatibility between macrorealism and quantum theory, are often considered to be the temporal analog of CHSH inequalities. However, they do not provide the NSCs for macrorealism. There is thus scope of formulating new macrorealist inequalities inequivalent and stronger than the standard Leggett–Garg inequalities. In this paper, we propose two different classes of macrorealistic inequalities. A class of inequalities which are equivalent to the standard ones in macrorealist model but inequivalent and stronger in quantum theory, and the other class of inequalities are inequivalent to the all the other formulations of Leggett–Garg inequalities both in macrorealist model and in quantum theory. The latter class of macrorealist inequalities reveals the incompatibility between macrorealism and quantum theory for specific cases even when any other formulation of Leggett–Garg inequalities fails to do so. We extend the formulations of inequivalent Leggett–Garg inequalities to the four-time and two-time measurement scenarios. Further, we provide a brief discussion about the alternative formulation of macrorealism known as the no-signaling in time (NSIT) conditions.
