Abstract

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) observations in two Λ-systems of 87Rb atom, |52S1/2F=1⟩→|52P3/2F′=1⟩←|52S1/2F=2⟩ and |52S1/2F=1⟩→|52P3/2F′=2⟩←|52S1/2F=2⟩ have been investigated in detail and the results are found consistent with our proposed theoretical models. The second Λ-system provides EIT signal with higher magnitude than the first system, both in the absence and in the presence of an applied magnetic field. The observed steeper slope of the EIT signal in the presence of the magnetic field can enable one to achieve tight frequency locking of lasers using these EIT signals.

Studies on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in $\Lambda$-systems in $^{87}Rb$ atom

C. S. Mishra, A. Chakraborty, Ruchi Srivastava +4 more

We have investigated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in two different $\Lambda$-systems in $^{87}Rb$ atom in $D_{2}$ line transitions. It is found that observed EIT signals in both the systems (A) ($|5^{2}S_{1/2} F=1\rangle \rightarrow |5^{2}P_{3/2} F'=1\rangle \leftarrow |5^{2}S_{1/2} F=2\rangle$) and (B) ($|5^{2}S_{1/2} F=1\rangle \rightarrow |5^{2}P_{3/2} F'=2\rangle \leftarrow |5^{2}S_{1/2} F=2\rangle$) have different strength and lineshape which are dependent on coupling beam power. For a given coupling beam power, the EIT signal with $\Lambda$-system (B) has more symmetric lineshape and greater strength than that obtained with system (A). The experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the results of a six-level theoretical model. We have further investigated EIT in both these $\Lambda$-systems in presence of applied longitudinal magnetic field and observed that separation between Zeeman split-EIT peaks increased linearly with the strength of the magnetic field. At a fixed value of applied magnetic field, the strength of Zeeman split-EIT peaks in both the $\Lambda$-systems increases with increase in coupling beam power. In presence of magnetic field and at higher coupling power, the observed EIT signals (central peaks) have higher slope than that of signals obtained in absence of magnetic field. These studies establish that $\Lambda$-system (B) is more useful than $\Lambda$-system (A) from applications point of view.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a Zeeman-sublevels A-system of cold STRb atoms in free space

蒋小军, 张海潮, 王育竹

We report the experimental investigation of electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in a Zeeman-sublevelsΛ-type system of cold 87Rb atoms in free space. We use the Zeeman substates of the hyperfine energy states 52S1/2, F = 2 and 52P3/2, F = 2 of 87Rb D2 line to form a Λ-type EIT scheme. The EIT signal is obtained by scanning the probe light over 1 MHz in 4 ms with an 80 MHz arbitrary waveform generator. More than 97% transparency and 100 k Hz EIT window are observed. This EIT scheme is suited for an application of pulsed coherent storage atom clock(Yan B, et al. 2009 Phys.Rev. A 79 063820).

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold85Rb atoms trapped in the ground hyperfineF= 2 state

V B Tiwari, S Singh, H S Rawat +2 more

We report electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cold 85 Rb atoms, trapped in the lower hyperfine level F = 2, of the ground state 5 2 S 1/2 (Tiwari V B et al 2008 Phys. Rev. A 78 063421). Two steady-state Λ-type systems of hyperfine energy levels are investigated using probe transitions into the levels F ′ = 2 and F ′ = 3 of the excited state 5 2 P 3/2 in the presence of coupling transitions F = 3 → F ′ = 2 and F = 3 → F ′ = 3, respectively. The effects of uncoupled magnetic sublevel transitions and coupling field's Rabi frequency on the EIT signal from these systems are studied using a simple theoretical model.

Bharti, Joyee Ghosh

We have theoretically investigated Zeeman Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) using the density-matrix formulation in thermal 87Rb vapor and obtained narrow EIT widths ~ 86 KHz with high peak transmissions >88% in presence of magnetic field.

Splitting of the electromagnetically induced transparency resonance on 85Rb atoms in strong magnetic fields up to the Paschen-Back regime

Armen D. Sargsyan, R. Mirzoyan, David G. Sarkisyan

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance in strong magnetic fields of up to 1.7 kG has been investigated with the use of a 30-μm cell filled with an atomic rubidium vapor and neon as a buffer gas. The EIT resonance in the Λ system of the D 1 line of 85 Rb atoms has been formed with the use of two narrowband (∼1 MHz) 795-nm diode lasers. The EIT resonance in a longitudinal magnetic field is split into five components. It has been demonstrated that the frequencies of the five EIT components are either blue- or red-shifted with an increase in the magnetic field, depending on the frequency ν P of the probe laser. In has been shown that in both cases the 85 Rb atoms enter the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime in magnetic fields of >1 kG. The hyperfine Paschen-Back regime is manifested by the frequency slopes of all five EIT components asymptotically approaching the same fixed value. The experiment agrees well with the theory.

A study of dark resonance splitting for the D 1 line of 87Rb in strong magnetic fields

Armen D. Sargsyan, R. Mirzoyan, David G. Sarkisyan

The process of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is studied using an extremely thin cell with thickness of a vapor column of rubidium atoms L = 794 nm. Wavelengths of resonant laser beams λ ≈ 794 nm. Results of the study of behavior of the EIT resonance (which is also called the “dark” resonance) formed in the Л system of the D 1 line of 87Rb atoms in strong magnetic fields up to 1700 G (0.17 T) are reported for the first time. Three dark resonances are recorded in magnetic fields with induction B < 300 G, two resonances are recorded at B > 650 G, and only one dark resonance is retained at B > 1200 G. A method of the formation of a dark resonance at a given frequency is demonstrated that will allow, under the corresponding conditions, the formation of a dark resonance also at B > 0.2 T. The experimental results are well described by the known theoretical models. Practical applications of these results are indicated.
