Abstract

Motivated by the fact that the low-energy properties of the Kondo model can be effectively simulated in spin chains, we study the realization of the effect with bond impurities in ultracold bosonic lattices at half filling. After presenting a discussion of the effective theory and of the mapping of the bosonic chain onto a lattice spin Hamiltonian, we provide estimates for the Kondo length as a function of the parameters of the bosonic model. We point out that the Kondo length can be extracted from the integrated real-space correlation functions, which are experimentally accessible quantities in experiments with cold atoms.

From Kondo effect to weak-link regime in quantum spin- 12 spin chains

Domenico Giuliano, Davide Rossini, Andrea Trombettoni

We analyze the crossover from Kondo to weak-link regime by means of a model of tunable bond impurities in the middle of a spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain. We study the Kondo screening cloud and estimate the Kondo length by combining perturbative renormalization group approach with the exact numerical calculation of the integrated real-space spin-spin correlation functions. We show that, when the spin impurity is symmetrically coupled to the two parts of the chain with realistic values of the Kondo coupling strengths and spin-parity symmetry is preserved, the Kondo length takes values within the reach of nowadays experimental technology in ultracold-atom setups. In the case of nonsymmetric Kondo couplings and/or spin parity broken by a nonzero magnetic field applied to the impurity, we discuss how Kondo screening redistributes among the chain as a function of the asymmetry in the couplings and map out the shrinking of the Kondo length when the magnetic field induces a crossover from Kondo impurity to weak-link physics.

Quantum phase transition in one dimensional extended Kondo lattice model away from half filling

Ki‐Seok Kim

We study one dimensional {\it extended} Kondo lattice model, described by the $t-J$ Hamiltonian for conduction electrons away from half filling and the Heisenberg Hamiltonian for localized spins at half filling. Following Shankar,\cite{Shankar} we find an effective field theory for this model, where doped holes are represented by massless Dirac fermions (holons) and spin excitations are fractionalized into relativistic bosons (spinons). These holons and spinons interact via U(1) gauge fluctuations. Effects of Berry phase to the localized spins disappear due to the presence of Kondo couplings, causing the spinon excitations gapped. Furthermore, the gauge fluctuations are suppressed by hole doping. As a result, massive spinons are deconfined to arise in the localized spins unless the Kondo hybridization is strong enough. When the Kondo hybridization strength exceeds a certain value, we find that the localized spin chain becomes critical. This indicates that the present one dimensional Kondo lattice model exhibits a phase transition from a spin-gapped phase to a critical state in the localized spin chain, driven by the Kondo interaction.

Kondo effect in XXZ spin chains

Akira Furusaki, Takashi Hikihara

The Kondo effect in a one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model in the gapless $\mathrm{XY}$ regime $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ is studied both analytically and numerically. In our model an impurity spin $(S=1/2)$ is coupled to a single spin in the $\mathrm{XXZ}$ spin chain. Perturbative renormalization-group (RG) analysis is performed for various limiting cases to deduce low-energy fixed points. It is shown that in the ground state the impurity spin is screened by forming a singlet with a spin in the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain. In the antiferromagnetic side $(0<\ensuremath{\Delta}<~1)$ the host chain is cut into two semi-infinite chains by the singlet. In the ferromagnetic side $(\ensuremath{-}1<\ensuremath{\Delta}<0),$ on the other hand, the host $\mathrm{XXZ}$ chain remains as a single chain through ``healing'' of a weakened bond in the low-energy (long-distance) limit. The density-matrix renormalization-group method is used to study the size scaling of finite-size energy gaps and the power-law decay of correlation functions in the ground state. The numerical results are in good agreement with the predictions of the RG analysis. Low-temperature behaviors of specific heat and susceptibility are also discussed.

The Kondo effect in spin chains

Nicolas Laflorencie, Erik Schwartz Sørensen, Ian K. Affleck

It is well known that the free electron Kondo problem can be described by a one-dimensional (1D) model because only the s-wave part of the electronic wavefunction is affected by the Kondo coupling. Moreover, since only the spin degrees of freedom are involved in the Kondo interaction, and due to spin–charge separation in 1D, the universal low energy long distance physics of the Kondo model also arises when a magnetic impurity is coupled to the end of a gapless antiferromagnetic J 1 –J 2 spin- chain, where J 1 ( J 2 ) is the (next) nearest neighbor coupling. Experimental realizations of such spin chain models are possible and, using various analytical and numerical techniques, we present a detailed and quantitative comparison between the usual free electron Kondo model and such spin chain versions of the Kondo problem. For the gapless J 1 –J 2 spin chain two cases are studied, with zero next nearest neighbor coupling, J 2 = 0, and with a critical second-neighbor coupling, J 2 = J 2 c . We first focus on the spin chain impurity model with a critical second-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange where a bulk marginal coupling present in the spin chain model for J 2 < J 2 c vanishes . There, the usual Kondo physics is recovered in the spin chain model in the low energy regime (up to negligible corrections, dropping as powers of inverse length or energy). At J 2 c the spin chain model is not exactly solvable and we demonstrate the equivalence to the Kondo problem by comparing density matrix renormalization group calculations on the frustrated spin chain model with exact Bethe ansatz calculations of the electronic Kondo problem. We then analyze the nearest neighbor model ( J 2 = 0) where a new kind of Kondo effect occurs due to the presence of the bulk marginal coupling. This marginal coupling slightly alters the β function for the Kondo coupling, leading to a slower variation of the Kondo temperature, T K , with the bare Kondo coupling. In their exact Bethe ansatz solution of this spin chain impurity model ( J 2 = 0), Frahm and Zvyagin noted this relation as well as the connection to the Kondo problem. Here, by numerically solving the Bethe ansatz equations we provide further evidence for the connection to Kondo physics and in addition we present low temperature quantum Monte Carlo results for the impurity susceptibility that further support this connection.

Ground-state properties of the half-filled Kondo lattice model: A numerical study

Hiromi Otsuka

Ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model are investigated using the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulation method. To reduce the difficulty of the negative sign problem, we employ the variationally optimized singlet wave function. Since the improvement of Monte Carlo sampling efficiency is achieved in the half-filling case, we can perform the simulations on large systems (up to 26-site system). The QMC data on the local spin correlations are closely compared with those of the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations as well as with the exact diagonalization data of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) lattice model. We find that the local spin correlation decays exponentially with the correlation length ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$\ensuremath{\sim}2.54 in the QMC data, while ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathit{f}\mathit{f}}$\ensuremath{\sim}1.08 in the VMC results (J/t=1). This implies the absence of the long-range order (the existence of the spin gap) and the importance of intersite correlation effects which are not taken into account in the VMC results. On the other hand, the system size dependence is almost absent in the Kondo lattice model results, which contrasts the behavior in the RKKY data.

Perturbation approach for the Kondo Hamiltonian

Guang-Ming Zhang, Hong Chen, Xiang Xia Wu

The bosonized Kondo Hamiltonian is obtained by comparing the long-time limit of the reduced grand partition function for the impurity spin. We analyze this bosonized Kondo Hamiltonian at zero temperature and derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the effective interaction between the conduction electrons via an impurity-spin scattering. The infrared divergences encountered in the conventional perturbation theory are caused by this growth effective coupling at the low-energy limit. With the Bogoliubov transformation, we have developed a perturbation approach for this effective Hamiltonian and investigated the nontrivial ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic crossover of the impurity spin. The critical condition derived here is in agreement with the renormalization-group numerical result. In particular, the ground-state wave function and its excitation spectrum of the conduction electrons are also obtained. Moreover, this effective Hamiltonian may be mapped onto a modified quantum sine-Gordon model. Paralleling the renormalization-group theory of the quantum sine-Gordon model, we straightforwardly reproduce previous results and derive the higher-order terms and a new universal correction in the flow equations.
