Abstract

We present new numerical tools to analyze symmetry-broken phases in the context of $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-symmetric translation-invariant matrix product states (MPS) and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) methods for infinite cylinders, and determine the phase diagram of the geometrically frustrated triangular Heisenberg model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor (NN and NNN) interactions. The appearance of Nambu-Goldstone modes in the excitation spectrum is characterized by ``tower of states'' levels in the momentum-resolved entanglement spectrum. Symmetry-breaking phase transitions are detected by a combination of the correlation lengths and second and fourth cumulants of the magnetic order parameters (which we call the Binder ratio), even though symmetry implies that the order parameter itself is strictly zero. Using this approach, we have identified a ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ order, a columnar order, and an algebraic spin liquid (specific to width-6 systems), alongside the previously studied topological spin liquid phase. For the latter, we also demonstrate robustness against chiral perturbations.

Frustrated spin systems, an MPS approach

S. N. Saadatmand

In spin lattices, frustration happens when there exists a competition between different terms of the Hamiltonian, which cannot be simultaneously minimized in all local physical bases. Frustration can destabilize the bipartite Neel order, which is the conventional groundstate of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg-type models in two dimensions. Hence, the focus of two-dimensional quantum magnetism studies has been directed toward elucidating the zero-temperature properties of Heisenberg-type models on the Archimedean lattices that exhibit geometrical frustration. This type of frustration is of great interest since it can lead to exotic forms of the quantum matter, such as topological spin-liquid (SL) and many-sublattice long-range-ordered phases. The spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model (THM) is a prototypical model with geometrical frustration, which has the highest coordination number of all Archimedean lattices. However, there exist two major, distinct difficulties for numerical methods to efficiently determine the groundstate properties of the THM: the immense dimension of the Hilbert space and the geometrical frustration phenomenon. In this thesis, to deal with such difficulties, we employ the state-of-the- art non-Abelian matrix product states (MPS) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We exploit the symmetries of the Hamiltonian to reduce the working dimension of the Hilbert space and, to lessen the effects of the geometrical frustration, we depend on the local entanglement (area-law) nature of the MPS as it scales with the size of a lattice subspace with reduced spatial dimensions. In such a way, we thoroughly examine the phase diagram of the THM with nearest and next-nearest neighbor (NN and NNN) exchange couplings on finite- and infinite-length cylinders of widths up to 12 sites. In addition, we develop new numerical tools to analyze topological and symmetry-broken phases in the context of the SU(2)-symmetric translation-invariant MPS algorithm. We establish that on infinite cylinders, the anyonic sectors of a topological order can be classified through the fractionalization of global symmetries and degeneracy patterns of the entanglement spectrum (ES). On the other hand, we detect symmetry-breaking phase transitions by a combination of the correlation lengths and second and fourth cumulants of the magnetic order parameters, even though symmetry implies that the order parameter itself is strictly zero. Furthermore, the appearance of Nambu-Goldstone modes in the excitation spectrum can be detected using “tower of states” (TOS) levels in the momentum-resolved ES. By applying the new tools to the THM, we discover a variety of exotic groundstates such as a Z2-gauge toric-code-type topological order (with vison and spinon excitations), a NNN Majumdar-Gosh, and a long-range 120◦-ordered state.

Global phase diagram and quantum spin liquids in a spin- 12 triangular antiferromagnet

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, Jian‐Xin Zhu +2 more

We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor ${J}_{1}>0$, the next-nearest-neighobr ${J}_{2}>0$ Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}({\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{i}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{j})\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}{\stackrel{P\vec}{S}}_{k}$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing ${J}_{2}$ (${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.3$) and ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$ (${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, stripe, and noncoplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ triangular model ($0.08\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small ${J}_{\ensuremath{\chi}}$. We also compute the spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest a large gap in the odd topological sector but a small or vanishing gap in the even sector. We discuss the implications of our results on the nature of the spin liquid phases.

Nature of quantum spin liquids of the S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice: A parallel DMRG study

Yi‐Fan Jiang, Hong‐Chen Jiang

We study the ground-state properties of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- $({J}_{1})$, next-nearest- $({J}_{2})$, and third-neighbor $({J}_{3})$ interactions by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. By combining parallel DMRG with $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ spin rotational symmetry, we are able to obtain accurate results on large cylinders with length up to ${L}_{x}=48$ and circumference ${L}_{y}=6--12$. Our results suggest that the QSL phase of the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model is gapped, which is characterized by the absence of a gapless mode and by short-range spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations. In the presence of ${J}_{3}$ interaction, we find that a critical QSL with a single gapless mode emerges. While both spin-spin and scalar chiral-chiral correlations are short ranged, dimer-dimer correlations are quasi long ranged and decay as a power law at long distances.

Spin liquid phase of the S = 1 2 J 1 − J 2 Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

Zhenyue Zhu, Steven R. White

We study the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions ${J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}$ with the density matrix renormalization group, on long open cylinders with widths up to nine lattice spacings. In an intermediate ${J}_{2}$ region $0.06\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.17$, we find evidence for a spin liquid (SL) state with short range spin-spin, bond-bond, and chiral correlation lengths, bordered by a classical ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ N\'eel ordered state at small ${J}_{2}$ and by a two sublattice collinear magnetically ordered state at larger ${J}_{2}$. Focusing on ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=0.1$, we find a number of signatures of a gapped SL phase.

Symmetry fractionalization in the topological phase of the spin- 1 2 J 1 − J 2 triangular Heisenberg model

S. N. Saadatmand, Ian P. McCulloch

Using density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for infinite cylinders, we elucidate the properties of the spin-liquid phase of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. We find four distinct ground states characteristic of a nonchiral, ${Z}_{2}$ topologically ordered state with vison and spinon excitations. We shed light on the interplay of topological ordering and global symmetries in the model by detecting fractionalization of time-reversal and space-group dihedral symmetries in the anyonic sectors, which leads to the coexistence of symmetry protected and intrinsic topological order. The anyonic sectors, and information on the particle statistics, can be characterized by degeneracy patterns and symmetries of the entanglement spectrum. We demonstrate the ground states on finite-width cylinders are short-range correlated and gapped; however, some features in the entanglement spectrum suggest that the system develops gapless spinonlike edge excitations in the large-width limit.

Entanglement spectroscopy of SU(2)-broken phases in two dimensions

Fabian Kolley, Stefan Depenbrock, Ian P. McCulloch +2 more

In magnetically ordered systems, the breaking of SU(2) symmetry in the thermodynamic limit is associated with the appearance of a special type of low-lying excitations in finite-size energy spectra, the so-called tower of states (TOS). In the present work, we numerically demonstrate that there is a correspondence between the SU(2) tower of states and the lower part of the ground-state entanglement spectrum (ES). Using state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we examine the ES of the 2D antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}$-${J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model on both the triangular and kagome lattice. At large ferromagnetic ${J}_{2}$, the model exhibits a magnetically ordered ground state. Correspondingly, its ES contains a family of low-lying levels that are reminiscent of the energy tower of states. Their behavior (level counting, finite-size scaling in the thermodynamic limit) sharply reflects TOS features, and is characterized in terms of an effective entanglement Hamiltonian that we provide. At large system sizes, TOS levels are divided from the rest by an entanglement gap. Our analysis suggests that (TOS) entanglement spectroscopy provides an alternative tool for detecting and characterizing SU(2)-broken phases using DMRG.
