Abstract

The theory of quasifree quantum stochastic calculus for infinite-dimensional noise is developed within the framework of Hudson–Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus. The question of uniqueness for the covariance amplitude with respect to which a given unitary quantum stochastic cocycle is quasifree is addressed, and related to the minimality of the corresponding stochastic dilation. The theory is applied to the identification of a wide class of quantum random walks whose limit processes are driven by quasifree noises.

Quantum random walks

Michał Gnacik

In this thesis we investigate the convergence of various quantum random walks to quantum stochastic cocycles defined on a Bosonic Fock space. We prove a quantum analogue of the Donsker invariance principle by invoking the so-called semigroup representation of quantum stochastic cocycles. In contrast to similar results by other authors our proof is relatively elementary. We also show convergence of products of ampliated random walks with different system algebras; in particular, we give a sufficient condition to obtain a cocycle via products of cocycles. The CCR algebra, its quasifree representations and the corresponding quasifree stochastic calculus are also described. In particular, we study in detail gauge-invariant and squeezed quasifree states. We describe repeated quantum interactions between a `small' quantum system and an environment consisting of an infinite chain of particles. We study different cases of interaction, in particular those which occur in weak coupling limits and low density limits. Under different choices of scaling of the interaction part we show that random walks, which are generated by the associated unitary evolutions of a repeated interaction system, strongly converge to unitary quantum stochastic cocycles. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such convergence. Furthermore, under repeated quantum interactions, we consider the situation of an infinite chain of identical particles where each particle is in an arbitrary faithful normal state. This includes the case of thermal Gibbs states. We show that the corresponding random walks converge strongly to unitary cocycles for which the driving noises depend on the state of the incoming particles. We also use conditional expectations to obtain a simple condition, at the level of generators, which suffices for the convergence of the associated random walks. Limit cocycles, for which noises depend on the state of the incoming particles, are also obtained by investigating what we refer to as `compressed' random walks. Lastly, we show that the cocycles obtained via the procedure of repeated quantum interactions are quasifree, thus the driving noises form a representation of the relevant CCR algebra. Both gauge-invariant and squeezed representations are shown to occur.

Quantum Stochastic Differential Equations

Mou-Hsiung Chang

Quite a few researchers have contributed to the development of quantum stochastic differential equations driven by quantum noises, initiated by Hudson and Parthasarathy [HP84a]. A nonexhaustive list of contributors includes Fagnola and Wills [FW00], [FW03], Obata [Oba97], and Linsay and Skalski [LS10]. Based on the results presented in Chapter 3, this chapter derives and considers a general form of linear (left) and (right) Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic differential equations driven by quantum noises in symmetric Fock space with operator-valued matrices as coefficients. Specifically, it studies the existence and uniqueness of the strong and mild solution processes for both the left and right quantum stochastic differential equations and conditions under which the solution processes are unitary, isometry, co-isometry, and regular. These results make extensive use of the properties of stochastic integral driven by quantum noise and its quantum stochastic calculus in the context of a symmetric Fock space, which was explored in Chapter 3. Various discrete approximation schemes, including Bouten et al. [BvH07], of the left Hudson-Parthasarathy QSDE are also explored for numerical computation. Specifically, it is shown that the solution of the Hudson- Parthasarathy QSDE can be approximated by a sequence of discrete interaction models with decreasing time step. In order to study this problem, discrete interaction models are embedded in a limiting space. This allows one to present strong convergence of the embedded discrete cocycles to the solution of the Hudson-Parthasarathy QSDE. It will be pointed out that the way in which the embedding is done does not affect the proof of the main result for discrete approximations. Examples of a QSDE that is analytically solvable and a QSDE that possesses a mild solution but not a strong solution are also given. QSDE of Hudson-Parthasarathy Type It has been mentioned earlier in Chapter 3 that an open quantum systems treated in this monograph are to be formulated as a quantum system in which the underlined (or the initial) quantum system is perturbed by quantum noises that represent the environment.

Application of Quantum Stochastic Calculus to Feedback Control

Andreas Boukas

The basic aspects of the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus and of the Accardi-Fagnola-Quaegebeur representation free stochastic calculus are presented. The basic features of the stochastic calculus for the square of white noise recently developed by Accardi-Boukas are described. Quantum stochastic calculus associated with quadratic quantum noises

Un Cig Ji, Kalyan B. Sinha

We first study a class of fundamental quantum stochastic processes induced by the generators of a six dimensional non-solvable Lie †-algebra consisting of all linear combinations of the generalized Gross Laplacian and its adjoint, annihilation operator, creation operator, conservation, and time, and then we study the quantum stochastic integrals associated with the class of fundamental quantum stochastic processes, and the quantum Itô formula is revisited. The existence and uniqueness of solution of a quantum stochastic differential equation is proved. The unitarity conditions of solutions of quantum stochastic differential equations associated with the fundamental processes are examined. The quantum stochastic calculus extends the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus.

The convergence of unitary quantum random walks

Alexander C. R. Belton, Michał Gnacik, J. Martin Lindsay

We give a simple and direct treatment of the convergence of quantum random walks to quantum stochastic operator cocycles, using the semigroup method. The pointwise product of two such quantum random walks is shown to converge to the quantum stochastic Trotter product of the respective limit cocycles. Since such Trotter products themselves reduce to pointwise products when the cocycles inhabit commuting subspaces of the system algebra, this yields an elementary approach to the quantum random walk approximation of the 'tensorisation' of cocycles with common noise dimension space. The repeated quantum interactions model is shown to fit nicely into the convergence scheme described.

Quantum random walks and their convergence

Lingaraj Sahu

Using coordinate-free basic operators on toy Fock spaces \cite{AP}, quantum random walks are defined following the ideas in \cite{LP,AP}. Strong convergence of quantum random walks associated with bounded structure maps is proved under suitable assumptions, extendings the result obtained in \cite{KBS} in case of one dimensional noise. To handle infinite dimensional noise we have used the coordinate-free language of quantum stochastic calculus developed in \cite{GS1}.
