Abstract

We propose a robust realization of the two-photon quantum Rabi model in a trapped-ion setting based on a continuous dynamical decoupling scheme. In this manner the magnetic dephasing noise, which is identified as the main obstacle to achieve long-time coherent dynamics in ion-trap simulators, can be safely eliminated. More specifically, we investigate the ultrastrong coupling regime of the two-photon quantum Rabi model whose realization in trapped ions involves second-order sideband processes. Hence, the resulting dynamics becomes unavoidably slow and more exposed to magnetic noise requiring an appropriate scheme for its elimination. Furthermore, we discuss how dynamical decoupling methods take a dual role in our protocol, namely they remove the main source of decoherence from the dynamics while they actively define the parameter regime of the simulated model.

Noise analysis for the ion trap implementation of the quantum Rabi model in the the deep strong coupling regime

Ricardo Puebla, Jorge Casanova, Martin Bodo Plenio

The dynamics of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime is investigated in a trapped-ion setup. Recognizably, the main hallmark of this regime is the emergence of collapses and revivals, whose faithful observation is hindered under realistic magnetic dephasing noise. Here we discuss how to attain a faithful implementation of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime which is robust against magnetic-field fluctuations and at the same time provides a large tunability of the simulated parameters. This is achieved by combining standing wave laser configuration with continuous dynamical decoupling. In this manner the present work further supports the suitability of continuous dynamical decoupling techniques in trapped-ion settings to faithfully realize different interacting dynamics.

Magnetic field fluctuations analysis for the ion trap implementation of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime

Ricardo Puebla, Jorge Casanova, Martin Bodo Plenio

The dynamics of the quantum Rabi model (QRM) in the deep strong coupling regime is theoretically analyzed in a trapped-ion set-up. Recognizably, the main hallmark of this regime is the emergence of collapses and revivals, whose faithful observation is hindered under realistic magnetic dephasing noise. Here, we discuss how to attain a faithful implementation of the QRM in the deep strong coupling regime which is robust against magnetic field fluctuations and at the same time provides a large tunability of the simulated parameters. This is achieved by combining standing wave laser configuration with continuous dynamical decoupling. In addition, we study the role that amplitude fluctuations play to correctly attain the QRM using the proposed method. In this manner, the present work further supports the suitability of continuous dynamical decoupling techniques in trapped-ion settings to faithfully realize different interacting dynamics.

A robust scheme for the implementation of the quantum Rabi model in trapped ions

Ricardo Puebla, Jorge Casanova, Martin Bodo Plenio

We show that the technique known as concatenated continuous dynamical decoupling (CCD) can be applied to a trapped-ion setup for a robust implementation of the quantum Rabi model in a variety of parameter regimes. These include the case where the Dirac equation emerges, and the limit in which a quantum phase transition takes place. We discuss the applicability of the CCD scheme in terms of the fidelity between different initial states evolving under an ideal quantum Rabi model and their corresponding trapped-ion realization, and demonstrate the effectiveness of noise suppression of our method.

Nonlinear quantum Rabi model in trapped ions

Xiao-Hang Cheng, Íñigo Arrazola, Julen Simon Pedernales +3 more

We study the nonlinear dynamics of trapped-ion models far away from the Lamb-Dicke regime. This nonlinearity induces a blockade on the propagation of quantum information along the Hilbert space of the Jaynes-Cummings and quantum Rabi models. We propose to use this blockade as a resource for the dissipative generation of high-number Fock states. Also, we compare the linear and nonlinear cases of the quantum Rabi model in the ultrastrong and deep strong-coupling regimes. Moreover, we propose a scheme to simulate the nonlinear quantum Rabi model in all coupling regimes. This can be done via off-resonant nonlinear red- and blue-sideband interactions in a single trapped ion, yielding applications as a dynamical quantum filter.

A Cavity-Interfaced Register of Trapped-Ion Qubits with Multi-Second Coherence

James Bate, Johannes Helgert, Marco Canteri +2 more

Scalable quantum networks require generating remote entanglement faster than decoherence erases it, calling for nodes that combine efficient light-matter interfaces with long coherence times. Cavity-coupled trapped ions are a promising platform for network nodes, offering high-efficiency extraction of photons. Here, we report multi-second coherence for a qubit register in a cavity-integrated ion trap. First, using dynamical decoupling on spin ground states, the coherence times of five co-trapped ion qubits are extended into the multi-second regime. Second, cavity-collected ion-photon entanglement is faithfully stored in these protected ion-memory states for multiple seconds. Third, we show that ion-memory qubits can be robust to the generation of over a thousand cavity photons by a co-trapped ion, with decoherence limited by laser crosstalk. Finally, we estimate that a modestly improved and duplicated ion-cavity system could enable the simultaneous establishment of multiple remote Bell pairs between two remote ion registers, representing a step toward networking multi-qubit prototype trapped-ion quantum processors.

Quantum Rabi Model with Trapped Ions

Julen Simon Pedernales, Ion Lizuain, Simone Felicetti +3 more

We propose the quantum simulation of the quantum Rabi model in all parameter regimes by means of detuned bichromatic sideband excitations of a single trapped ion. We show that current setups can reproduce, in particular, the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes of such a paradigmatic light-matter interaction. Furthermore, associated with these extreme dipolar regimes, we study the controlled generation and detection of their entangled ground states by means of adiabatic methods. Ion traps have arguably performed the first quantum simulation of the Jaynes-Cummings model, a restricted regime of the quantum Rabi model where the rotating-wave approximation holds. We show that one can go beyond and experimentally investigate the quantum simulation of coupling regimes of the quantum Rabi model that are difficult to achieve with natural dipolar interactions.
