Numerical Study of Quantum Hall Bilayers at Total Filling νT=1 : A New Phase at Intermediate Layer Distances

Abstract

We study the phase diagram of quantum Hall bilayer systems with total filing ν_{T}=1/2+1/2 of the lowest Landau level as a function of layer distances d. Based on numerical exact diagonalization calculations, we obtain three distinct phases, including an exciton superfluid phase with spontaneous interlayer coherence at small d, a composite Fermi liquid at large d, and an intermediate phase for 1.1<d/l_{B}<1.8 (l_{B} is the magnetic length). The transition from the exciton superfluid to the intermediate phase is identified by (i) a dramatic change in the Berry curvature of the ground state under twisted boundary conditions on the two layers and (ii) an energy level crossing of the first excited state. The transition from the intermediate phase to the composite Fermi liquid is identified by the vanishing of the exciton superfluid stiffness. Furthermore, from our finite-size study, the energy cost of transferring one electron between the layers shows an even-odd effect and possibly extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, indicating the enhanced intralayer correlation. Our identification of an intermediate phase and its distinctive features shed new light on the theoretical understanding of the quantum Hall bilayer system at total filling ν_{T}=1.

DISORDERING OF THE CORRELATED STATE OF THE QUANTUM HALL BILAYER AT FILLING FACTOR ν = 1

Zlatko Papić, Milica V. Milovanović

The phase diagram of a quantum Hall bilayer at total filling ν = 1 contains an incompressible superfluid for small distances d between the layers, as well as the compressible phase corresponding to two uncoupled Fermi liquids for large d. Using exact diagonalization on the sphere and torus geometry, we investigate a long-standing question of the nature of the transition between the two regimes, and the possibility for the existence of a paired phase in the transition region. We find considerable evidence for a direct transition between the superfluid and the Fermi liquid phase, based in particular on the behavior of the ground state energy on the sphere (including appropriate finite-size corrections) as a function of d. At the critical distance dC ≈ 11.6ℓB the topological number ("shift") of the ground state changes, suggesting that tuning the layer separation d in experiment likely leads to a direct transition between the superfluid and the Fermi liquid phase.

Phase transition in bilayer quantum Hall system with opposite magnetic field

Ke 珂 Yang 杨

We construct a mapped bilayer quantum Hall system to realize the proposal that two nearly flatbands have opposite Chern numbers. For the C = ±1 case, the two Landau levels of the bilayer experience opposite magnetic fields. We consider a mapped bilayer quantum Hall system at total filling ν t = 1 2 + 1 2 where the intralayer interaction is repulsive and the interlayer interaction is attractive. We take exact diagonalization (ED) calculations on a torus to study the phase transition when the separation distance d/lB is driven. The critical point at d c/lB = 0.68 is characterized by a collapse of degeneracy and a crossing of energy levels. In the region d/lB < d c/lB , the states of each level are highly degenerate. The pair-correlation function indicates electrons with opposite pseudo-spins are strong correlated at r = 0. We find an exciton stripe phase composed of bound pairs. The ferromagnetic ground state is destroyed by the strong effective attractive potential. An electron composite-Fermion (eCF) and a hole composite Fermion (hCF) are tightly bound. In the region d/lB > d c/lB , a crossover from the d → d c limit to the large d limit is observed. The electron and hole composite Fermion liquids (CFL) are realized by composite Fermions (CF) which attach opposite fluxes, respectively.

Exciton condensation in quantum Hall bilayers at total filling νT=5

Zheng Zhu, Shao-Kai Jian, D. N. Sheng

Quantum Hall bilayers have proven to be an inexhaustible platform for emerging exotic states and novel phase transitions in the strongly correlated arena. Here, the authors study coupled quantum Hall bilayers at half-filled first excited Landau levels by varying the layer distance. The authors find a continuous transition between the exciton superfluid phase and two copies of the Moore-Read state. This transition breaks symmetry and changes topology simultaneously, providing an exotic example of a quantum phase transition beyond the Landau paradigm.

Paired Composite Fermion Phase of Quantum Hall Bilayers at ν=12+12

Gunnar Möller, Steven H. Simon, Edward H. Rezayi

We provide numerical evidence for composite fermion pairing in quantum Hall bilayer systems at filling nu=1/2+1/2 for intermediate spacing between the layers. We identify the phase as p_(x)+ip_(y) pairing, and construct high accuracy trial wave functions to describe the ground state on the sphere. For large distances between the layers, and for finite systems, a competing "Hund's rule" state, or composite fermion liquid, prevails for certain system sizes.

Trial wave functions for ν=12+12 quantum Hall bilayers

Gunnar Möller, Steven H. Simon, Edward H. Rezayi

Quantum Hall bilayer systems at filling fractions near $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$ undergo a transition from a compressible phase with strong intralayer correlation to an incompressible phase with strong interlayer correlations as the layer separation $d$ is reduced below some critical value. Deep in the intralayer phase (large separation) the system can be interpreted as a fluid of composite fermions (CFs), whereas deep in the interlayer phase (small separation) the system can be interpreted as a fluid of composite bosons (CBs). The focus of this paper is to understand the states that occur for intermediate layer separation by using trial variational wave functions. We consider two main classes of wave functions. In the first class, previously introduced in M\"oller et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 176803 (2008)], we consider interlayer BCS pairing of two independent CF liquids. We find that these wave functions are exceedingly good for $d\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{\ensuremath{\ell}}_{0}$ with ${\ensuremath{\ell}}_{0}$ as the magnetic length. The second class of wave functions naturally follows the reasoning of Simon et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 046803 (2003)] and generalizes the idea of pairing wave functions by allowing the CFs also to be replaced continuously by CBs. This generalization allows us to construct exceedingly good wave functions for interlayer spacings of $d\ensuremath{\lesssim}{\ensuremath{\ell}}_{0}$ as well. The accuracy of the wave functions discussed in this work, compared with exact diagonalization, approaches that of the celebrated Laughlin wave function.

Numeric and Analytic Investigation on Phase Diagrams and Phasetransitions of the ν = 2/3 Bilayer Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

Yangdong Zheng, T. Sorita

The phase diagrams and phase transitions of a typical bilayer fractional quantum Hall (QH) system with filling factor ν = 2/3 at the layer balanced point are investigated theoretically by finite size exact-diagonalization calculations and an exactly solvable model. We find some basic features essentially different from the bilayer integer QH systems at ν = 2, reflecting the special characteristics of the fractional QH systems. The degeneracy of the ground states occurs depending on the difference between intralayer and interlayer Coulomb energies, when interlayer tunneling energy (ΔSAS) gets close to zero. The continuous transitions of the finite size systems between the spin-polarized and spin-unpolarized phases are determined by the competition between the Zeeman energy (ΔZ) and the electron Coulomb energy, and are almost not affected by ΔSAS.
