From Log-Determinant Inequalities to Gaussian Entanglement via Recoverability Theory

Abstract

Many determinantal inequalities for positive definite block matrices are consequences of general entropy inequalities, specialized to Gaussian distributed vectors with prescribed covariances. In particular, strong subadditivity (SSA) yields ln det VAC+ln det VBC-ln det VABC-ln det VC≥ 0 for all 3 × 3 block matrices VABC, where subscripts identify principal submatrices. We shall refer to the above-mentioned inequality as SSA of log-det entropy. In this paper, we develop further insights on the properties of the above-mentioned inequality and its applications to classical and quantum information theory. In the first part of this paper, we show how to find known and new necessary and sufficient conditions under which saturation with equality occurs. Subsequently, we discuss the role of the classical transpose channel (also known as Petz recovery map) in this problem and find its action explicitly. We then prove some extensions of the saturation theorem, by finding faithful lower bounds on a log-det conditional mutual information. In the second part, we focus on quantum Gaussian states, whose covariance matrices are not only positive but obey additional constraints due to the uncertainty relation. For Gaussian states, the log-det entropy is equivalent to the Rényi entropy of order 2. We provide a strengthening of log-det SSA for quantum covariance matrices that involves the so-called Gaussian Rényi-2 entanglement of formation, a well-behaved entanglement measure defined via a Gaussian convex roof construction. We then employ this result to define a log-det entropy equivalent of the squashed entanglement measure, which is remarkably shown to coincide with the Gaussian Rényi-2 entanglement of formation. This allows us to establish useful properties of such measure(s), such as monogamy, faithfulness, and additivity on Gaussian states.

Strong subadditivity for log-determinant of covariance matrices and its applications

Gerardo Adesso, R. Simon

Abstract We prove that the log-determinant of the covariance matrix obeys the strong subadditivity inequality for arbitrary tripartite states of multimode continuous variable quantum systems. This establishes general limitations on the distribution of information encoded in the second moments of canonically conjugate operators. The inequality is shown to be stronger than the conventional strong subadditivity inequality for von Neumann entropy in a class of pure tripartite Gaussian states. We finally show that such an inequality implies a strict monogamy-type constraint for joint Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen steerability of single modes by Gaussian measurements performed on multiple groups of modes.

Schur Complement Inequalities for Covariance Matrices and Monogamy of Quantum Correlations

Ludovico Lami, Christoph Hirche, Gerardo Adesso +1 more

We derive fundamental constraints for the Schur complement of positive matrices, which provide an operator strengthening to recently established information inequalities for quantum covariance matrices, including strong subadditivity. This allows us to prove general results on the monogamy of entanglement and steering quantifiers in continuous variable systems with an arbitrary number of modes per party. A powerful hierarchical relation for correlation measures based on the log-determinant of covariance matrices is further established for all Gaussian states, which has no counterpart among quantities based on the conventional von Neumann entropy.

Measuring Gaussian Quantum Information and Correlations Using the Rényi Entropy of Order 2

Gerardo Adesso, Davide Girolami, Alessio Serafini

We demonstrate that the Rényi-2 entropy provides a natural measure of information for any multimode Gaussian state of quantum harmonic systems, operationally linked to the phase-space Shannon sampling entropy of the Wigner distribution of the state. We prove that, in the Gaussian scenario, such an entropy satisfies the strong subadditivity inequality, a key requirement for quantum information theory. This allows us to define and analyze measures of Gaussian entanglement and more general quantum correlations based on such an entropy, which are shown to satisfy relevant properties such as monogamy.

Monotonicity of quantum relative entropy and recoverability

Mario Berta, Marius Lemm, Mark M. Wilde

The relative entropy is a principal measure of distinguishability in quantum information theory, with its most important property being that it is non-increasing with respect to noisy quantum operations. Here, we establish a remainder term for this inequality that quantifies how well one can recover from a loss of information by employing a rotated Petz recovery map. The main approach for proving this refinement is to combine the methods of [Fawzi and Renner, 2014] with the notion of a relative typical subspace from [Bjelakovic and Siegmund-Schultze, 2003]. Our paper constitutes partial progress towards a remainder term which features just the Petz recovery map (not a rotated Petz map), a conjecture which would have many consequences in quantum information theory. A well known result states that the monotonicity of relative entropy with respect to quantum operations is equivalent to each of the following inequalities: strong subadditivity of entropy, concavity of conditional entropy, joint convexity of relative entropy, and monotonicity of relative entropy with respect to partial trace. We show that this equivalence holds true for refinements of all these inequalities in terms of the Petz recovery map. So either all of these refinements are true or all are false.

Entanglement monogamy via multivariate trace inequalities

Mario Berta, Marco Tomamichel

Entropy is a fundamental concept in quantum information theory that allows to quantify entanglement and investigate its properties, for example its monogamy over multipartite systems. Here, we derive variational formulas for relative entropies based on restricted measurements of multipartite quantum systems. By combining these with multivariate matrix trace inequalities, we recover and sometimes strengthen various existing entanglement monogamy inequalities. In particular, we give direct, matrix-analysis-based proofs for the faithfulness of squashed entanglement by relating it to the relative entropy of entanglement measured with one-way local operations and classical communication, as well as for the faithfulness of conditional entanglement of mutual information by relating it to the separably measured relative entropy of entanglement. We discuss variations of these results using the relative entropy to states with positive partial transpose, and multipartite setups. Our results simplify and generalize previous derivations in the literature that employed operational arguments about the asymptotic achievability of information-theoretic tasks.
