Abstract

The effect of the next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) tunneling on the hard-core extended Bose–Hubbard model on square lattices is investigated. By means of the cluster mean-field theory, the ground-state phase diagrams are determined. When a modest nnn tunneling is introduced, depending on its sign, two distinct supersolid (SS) states with checkerboard crystal structures are found away from half-filing. The characters of various phase transitions out of these two SS states are discussed. In particular, for the case with kinetic frustration, the existence of a half SS phase possessing both solid and unconventional superfluid orders is established. Our work hence sheds light on the search of this interesting SS phase in real ultracold lattice gases with frustrated tunnelings.

Peculiar supersolid phases induced by frustrated tunneling in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

Shaojun Dong, Wen-Yuan Liu, Xiang-Fa Zhou +4 more

By using a state-of-the-art tensor network state method, we study the ground-state phase diagram of an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the square lattice with frustrated next-nearest-neighbor tunneling. In the hard-core limit, tunneling frustration stabilizes a peculiar half-supersolid phase with one sublattice being superfluid and the other sublattice being Mott insulator away from half filling. In the soft-core case, the model shows very rich phase diagrams above half filling, including three different types of supersolid phases depending on the interaction parameters. The considered model provides a promising route to experimentally search for a novel stable supersolid state induced by frustrated tunneling in the region below half filling with dipolar atoms or molecules.

Supersolidity from defect condensation in the extended boson Hubbard model

Yi‐Chun Chen, Roger G. Melko, Stefan Weßel +1 more

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the hard-core extended boson Hubbard model on the square lattice with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hoppings and repulsions, using Gutzwiller mean-field theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We observe the formation of supersolid states with checkerboard, striped, and quarter-filled crystal structures when the system is doped away from commensurate fillings. In the striped supersolid phase, a strong anisotropy in the superfluid density is obtained from the simulations; however, the transverse component remains finite, indicating a true two-dimensional superflow. We find that upon doping, the striped supersolid transitions directly into the supersolid with quarter-filled crystal structure, via a first-order stripe melting transition.

Vacancy supersolid of hard-core bosons on the square lattice

Long Dang, Massimo Boninsegni, Lode Pollet

The ground state of hard-core bosons on the square lattice with nearest and next-nearest-neighbor repulsion is studied by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A supersolid phase with vacancy condensation and ``star'' diagonal ordering is found for filling $\ensuremath{\rho}<0.25$. At filling $\ensuremath{\rho}>0.25$, a supersolid phase exists between the star and the stripe crystal at $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.5$. No supersolid phase occurs for $\ensuremath{\rho}>0.25$ if the ground state at half-filling is either a checkerboard crystal or a superfluid. No commensurate supersolid phase is observed.

Finite temperature phases and excitations of bosons on a square lattice: a cluster mean field study

Manali Malakar, Sudip Sinha, Subhasis Sinha

Abstract We study the finite temperature phases and collective excitations of hardcore as well as softcore bosons on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions, focusing on the formation of various types of supersolid (SS) phases and their stability under thermal fluctuations. The interplay between the on-site, nearest, and next nearest neighbor interactions leads to various density ordering and structural transitions, which we have plotted out. Thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams are obtained by cluster mean field theory at finite temperatures, which includes quantum effects systematically, and they are compared with the single-site mean field (MF) results. We investigate the melting process of the SS phase to normal fluid (NF), which can occur in at least two steps due to the presence of two competing orders in the SS. A tetra-critical point exists at finite temperature and exhibits intriguing behavior, which is analyzed for different regimes of interactions. The phase diagrams reveal the different pathways of the thermal transition of SSs to the NF phase, for different interaction regimes, which can be accessible by thermal quench protocols used in recent experiments. We show how the phases and the transitions between them can be identified from the characteristic features of the excitation spectrum. We analyze the appearance of a low-energy gapped mode apart from the gapless sound mode in the SS phase, which is analogous to the gapped mode recently studied for dipolar SS phases. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the results of the present work in the context of ongoing experiments on ultracold atomic gases and newly observed SS phases.

Extended Bose-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice

Jing Yu Gan, Yu Chuan Wen, Jinwu Ye +3 more

We study the extended Bose-Hubbard model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice by using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present the ground-state phase diagrams for both the hard-core and the soft-core bosons. For the hard-core case, the transition between the $\ensuremath{\rho}=1∕2$ solid and the superfluid is first order, and the supersolid state is unstable toward phase separation. For the soft-core case, due to the presence of multiple occupation, a stable particle-induced supersolid (SS-p) phase emerges when $1∕2<\ensuremath{\rho}<1$. The transition from the solid at $\ensuremath{\rho}=1∕2$ to the SS-p phase is second order with the superfluid density scaling as ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{s}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{-}1∕2$. The SS-p phase has the same diagonal order as the solid at $\ensuremath{\rho}=1∕2$. As the chemical potential increases further, the SS-p phase turns into a solid where two bosons occupy each site of one sublattice through a first-order transition. We also calculate the critical exponents of the transition between the $\ensuremath{\rho}=1∕2$ solid and superfluid at the Heisenberg point for the hard-core case. We find the dynamical critical exponent $z=0.15$, which is smaller than results obtained on smaller lattices. This indicates that $z$ approaches zero in the thermodynamic limit, and thus the transition is also first order even at the Heisenberg point.

Supersolid phases in the bosonic extended Hubbard model

Kwai-Kong Ng, Yung‐Chung Chen

We present a comprehensive numerical study on the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional hard core bosonic extended Hubbard model with nearest $({V}_{1})$ and next nearest neighbor $({V}_{2})$ repulsions. In addition to the quantum solid and superfluid phases, we report the existence of a striped supersolid and three-quarter (quarter)-filled supersolid at commensurate density $\ensuremath{\rho}=0.75$ (0.25) due to the interplay of ${V}_{1}$ and ${V}_{2}$ interactions. The nature of the three-quarter-filled supersolid and the associated quantum solid will be discussed. The observed quantum phase transition between the two supersolids of different symmetries is found to be first order.
