Preparation of non-ergodic states in quantum spin chains

Abstract

We test the time evolution of quite general initial states in a model that is exactly solvable, $i.e.$ a semi-infinite $XY$ spin chain with an impurity at the boundary. The dynamics is portrayed through the observation of the site magnetization along the chain, focusing on the long-time behavior of the magnetization, which is estimated using the stationary phase method. Localized states are split off from the continuum for some regions of the impurity parameter space. Bound states are essential for the non-ergodic behavior reported here. When two impurity states exist, the quantum interference between them leads to magnetization oscillations which settle over very long times with the absence of damping. The frequency of the remanent oscillation is recognized as being the Rabi frequency of the localized levels.

Probing the Possibilities of Ergodicity in the 1D Spin-1/2 XY Chain with Quench Dynamics

Hadi Cheraghi, Saeed Mahdavifar

Abstract Ergodicity sits at the heart of the connection between statistical mechanics and dynamics of a physical system. By fixing the initial state of the system into the ground state of the Hamiltonian at zero temperature and tuning a control parameter, we consider the occurrence of the ergodicity with quench dynamics in the one-dimensional (1D) spin-1/2 XY model in a transverse magnetic field. The ground-state phase diagram consists of two ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. It is known the magnetization in this spin system is non-ergodic. We set up two different experiments as we call them single and double quenches and test the dynamics of the magnetization along the Z-axis and the spin-spin correlation function along the X-axis which are the order parameters of the zero-temperature phases . Our exact results reveal that for single quenches at zero-temperature, the ergodicity depends on the initial state and the order parameter. In single quenches for a given order parameter, ergodicity will be observed with an ergodic-region for quenches from another phase, non-correspond to the phase of the order parameter, into itself. In addition, a quench from a ground-state phase point corresponding to the order parameter into or very close to the quantum critical point, hc = 1.0, discloses an ergodic behavior. Otherwise, for all other single quenches, the system behaves non-ergodic. Interestingly on the other setup, a double quench on a cyclic path, ergodicity is completely broken for starting from the phase corresponding to the order parameter. Otherwise, it depends on the first quenched point, and the quench time T when the model spent before a second quench in the way back which gives an ability to controlling the ergodicity in the system. Therefore, and contrary to expectations, in the mentioned model the ergodicity can be observed with probing quench dynamics at zero-temperature. Our results provide further insight into the zero-temperature dynamical behavior of quantum systems and their connections to the ergodicity phenomenon.

Energy diffusion in the ergodic phase of a many body localizable spin chain

Vipin Kerala Varma, Alessio Lerose, Francesca Pietracaprina +2 more

Abstract The phenomenon of many-body localization in disordered quantum many-body systems occurs when all transport is suppressed despite the fact that the excitations of the system interact. In this work we report on the numerical simulation of autonomous quantum dynamics for disordered Heisenberg chains when the system is prepared with an initial inhomogeneity in the energy density profile. Using exact diagonalisation and a dynamical code based on Krylov subspaces we are able to simulate dynamics for up to L = 26 spins. We find, surprisingly, the breakdown of energy diffusion even before the many-body localization transition whilst the system is still in the ergodic phase. Moreover, in the ergodic phase we also find a large region in parameter space where the energy dynamics remains diffusive but where spin transport has been previously evidenced to occur only subdiffusively: this is found to be true for initial states composed of infinitely many hydrodynamic modes (square-wave energy profile) or just the single longest mode (sinusoidal profile). This suggestive finding points towards a peculiar ergodic phase where particles are transported slower than energy, reminiscent of the situation in amorphous solids and of the gapped phase of the anisotropic Heisenberg model.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics due to Magnetization Transport in Transverse Ising Chain

Sirshendu Bhattacharyya, Subinay Dasgupta

We study the dynamics caused by transport of transverse magnetization in one dimensional transverse Ising chain at zero temperature. We observe that a class of initial states in fermionic momentum-space produce spatial variation in transverse magnetization. Starting from such a state, we obtain the transverse magnetization analytically and then observe its dynamics in presence of a homogeneous constant field $\Gamma$. In contradiction with general expectation, whatever be the strength of the field, the magnetization of the system does not become homogeneous even after infinite time. In each site, the dynamics is associated with oscillations having two different timescales. The envelope of the larger timescale oscillation decays algebraically having an exponent which is universal for the entire class of such initial states. Signature of quantum criticality is also embedded in the dynamics in two aspects : Behavioral change shown by the frequency of large timescale oscillation at any site and the corresponding magnetization at infinity when they cross the quantum critical point.

Remanent Magnetization: Signature of Many-Body Localization in Quantum Antiferromagnets

Valentina Ros, Markus Müller

We study the remanent magnetization in antiferromagnetic, many-body localized quantum spin chains, initialized in a fully magnetized state. Its long time limit is an order parameter for the localization transition, which is readily accessible by standard experimental probes in magnets. We analytically calculate its value in the strong-disorder regime exploiting the explicit construction of quasilocal conserved quantities of the localized phase. We discuss analogies in cold atomic systems.

Probability transport on the Fock space of a disordered quantum spin chain

Isabel Creed, David E. Logan, Sthitadhi Roy

Within the broad theme of understanding the dynamics of disordered quantum many-body systems, one of the simplest questions one can ask is, given an initial state, how does it evolve in time on the associated Fock-space graph, in terms of the distribution of probabilities thereon? A detailed quantitative description of the temporal evolution of out-of-equilibrium disordered quantum states and probability transport on the Fock space is our central aim here. We investigate it in the context of a disordered quantum spin chain, which hosts a disorder-driven many-body localization transition. Real-time dynamics/probability transport is shown to exhibit a rich phenomenology, which is markedly different between the ergodic and many-body localized phases. The dynamics is, for example, found to be strongly inhomogeneous at intermediate times in both phases, but while it gives way to homogeneity at long times in the ergodic phase, the dynamics remain inhomogeneous and multifractal in nature for arbitrarily long times in the localized phase. Similarly, we show that an appropriately defined dynamical lengthscale on the Fock-space graph is directly related to the local spin autocorrelation, and as such sheds light on the (anomalous) decay of the autocorrelation in the ergodic phase, and lack of it in the localized phase.

Low-energy dynamics of a magnetic impurity in a quantum spin chain: Role of local levels

Andrei A. Zvyagin

The characteristics of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), the contributions to the spin-lattice relaxation rate, and Knight shift of the resonance position are calculated exactly for a model spin-$1/2$ $XY$ chain with the magnetic impurity. It is shown that the deviations of the impurity's coupling to the chain and the effective impurity's $g$ factor from the values in the host spin chain yield special features in the temperature and magnetic field behavior for these NMR characteristics. The role of impurity-induced local levels in the NMR low-energy spin dynamics of spin chains is determined.
