Abstract

The Heisenberg Spin Chain system, in the continuum limit, can be represented by the non-linear Schr\odinger equation through the Hashimoto map. Inhomogeneity induced through localizing the nearest neighbor interaction strength can also be mapped similarly to an integro -differential generalization of the non-linear Schrodinger system [J. Phys. C: Solid State Phys. 15, L1305 (1982)] which is integrable. We show that the latter system is a particular non-holonomic deformation of the usual non-linear Schrodinger equation, aided by generalized parameterizations. General non-holonomic deformations correspond only to temporal inhomogeneity, with the additional spatial inhomogeneity corresponding to particular spectral orders, identical for both continuum Heisenberg spin chain and non-linear schrodinger system. Being semi-Classical in nature, these continuum limits of spin system display amplitude-phase entanglement.

On the inhomogeneous Heisenberg chain

Раджа Балакришнан

The author derives the spin evolution equation of a classical inhomogeneous Heisenberg chain and proves its exact equivalence (in the continuum limit) to an integro-differential nonlinear Schrodinger equation whose soliton solutions have been discussed earlier. Energy transport along the chain is related to the solution of this equation. He also describes possible physical systems to which the model is applicable.

On the integrability aspects of the one-dimensional classical continuum isotropic biquadratic Heisenberg spin chain

Kuppuswamy Porsezian, M. Daniel, M. Lakshmanan

The integrability aspects of a classical one-dimensional continuum isotropic biquadratic Heisenberg spin chain in its continuum limit up to order [O(a4)] in the lattice parameter ‘‘a’’ are studied. Through a differential geometric approach, the dynamical equation for the spin chain is expressed in the form of a higher-order generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (GNLSE). An integrable biquadratic chain that is a deformation of the lower-order continuum isotropic spin chain, is identified by carrying out a Painlevé singularity structure analysis on the GNLSE (also through gauge analysis) and its properties are discussed briefly. For the nonintegrable chain, the perturbed soliton solution is obtained through a multiple scale analysis.

The nonlinear Schrodinger model as a special continuum limit of the anisotropic Heisenberg model

B Golzer, Arno Holz

One-dimensional spin chains are investigated by constructing a mapping of the anisotropic Heisenberg model in the limit Delta to 1 onto the non-linear Schrodinger model (a gas of bosons with delta function interactions). Three applications of this mapping are given. First it is shown that the Bethe ansatz solutions of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model go over to the continuous Bethe ansatz solutions of the non-linear Schrodinger model. Then bound-state energies for arbitrary spin are calculated and as a third application a nearly identical mapping of the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in the limit Delta to 0 onto a non-linear Schrodinger model for fermion fields is given. Finally the authors construct an anisotropic SU(N) model. The continuum limit of this model is shown to be the (N-1)-component non-linear Schrodinger model, which can be solved by means of the nested Bethe ansatz.

Non-Hermitian spin chains with inhomogeneous coupling

Andrei Bytsko

An open $U_q(sl_2)$-invariant spin chain of spin $S$ and length $N$ with inhomogeneous coupling is investigated as an example of a non-Hermitian (quasi-Hermitian) model. For several particular cases of such a chain, the ranges of the deformation parameter $\gamma$ are determined for which the spectrum of the model is real. For a certain range of $\gamma$, a universal metric operator is constructed, and thus, the quasi-Hermitian nature of the model is established. This universal metric operator is nondynamical, its structure is determined only by the symmetry of the model. The results apply, in particular, to all known homogeneous $U_q(sl_2)$-invariant integrable spin chains with nearest-neighbor interaction. In addition, the most general form of a metric operator for a quasi-Hermitian operator in finite-dimensional spaces is discussed.

The quantum mechanics of non-holonomic systems

Richard J. Eden

Abstract Interactions of a non-holonomic type are fundamentally different from interactions which can be treated as part of the Hamiltonian of a system. They usually lead to constraints which do not commute with the Hamiltonian, and cause important alterations in the development of a state vector. This paper deals with the Heisenberg equations of motion by analogy with classical dynamics using the Poisson bracket formalism of a previous paper (Eden 1951). The Schrödinger equation is investigated in co-ordinate representation, and it is shown that the wave function will have a non-integrabie phase factor or quasi phase. The quasi phase leads to an indefiniteness in the wave function, but does not violate the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics nor lead to any ambiguity in the physical interpretation of the theory. The relation between the Schrödinger and the Heisenberg equations shows that the Schrödinger treatment is also consistent with the classical analogue. If there is a given initial probability that the non-holonomic system has co-ordinates q(0)r, then there will be the same probability that the wave function in the subsequent motion will be zero except in a certain region of co-ordinate space. This region is the part of co-ordinate space which is accessible in the classical theory from the point q(0)r.

Solitons in quantum Heisenberg chain

Marek Cieplak, Łukasz A. Turski

Using the coherent states method combined with the Schwinger coupled boson representation of the spin operators (1965) it is shown that solitons can propagate in the continuum limit of the quantum ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. These solitons are solutions of a nonlinear Schrodinger equation similar to that discussed by Lakshmanan (1977) for the classical Heisenberg chain. Several characteristics of the soliton, like its momentum, energy, and the number of bosonic excitations involved in the soliton formation, are calculated.
